Remington 5mm Magnum rimfire
Here is a little rifle bought new from my grass cutting earnings when I was 13 years old. I've shot a tremendous amount of groundhogs with it and even shot my first fox with this rifle. It was my primary squirrel rifle for a few years but it was absolutely head shots only!
In my college days I was low on cash and smarts. I sold this rifle to a friend because I had a hankering for something else that I can't remember. Years later in casual conversation I asked him if he still had the rifle. He did, and he gave it back to me. Everyone needs friends like that.
When Anguilla made some runs of 5mm Remington Magnum I purchased enough to last my lifetime plus. The great thing is this rifle really likes the new ammo and will keep five shots around 3/4" at 100 yards.
I know a lot of people feel this was just another useless cartridge, but it has served me well with everything I've used it for. If it had been introduced before the .22 magnum rimfire, had been priced more competitively, and supported by other manufacturers in the form of quality firearms I wonder if maybe it would have made it?
This is one of the guns I own that when used, I'm transported back in time with fond memories of hunts I've had with this Remington. It just makes me feel like a kid again.
I've included a few pics of some period advertising and my collection of vintage ammo, all full. The Peters box is not very common.
Anyway, just my opinion, and my plan is to pass it down to a grandson one day, but I'm not done with it yet. (The 5mm is on the left)

I remember that caliber and those rifles. I always thought they were neat but never bought one.

I had one of those and it was an accurate little rifle. Traded it off on something else back in the day.

There was even a CF conversion available. But aftermarket. It involved a bolt modification and included CF cases and dies for reloading. One of the early problems was frequent case splitting. I do not know if Aguila overcame that problem. I had a rifle and four boxes of ammunition but never fired it. Sold it around five years ago. Mine was the tubular magazine version.

I've not had any case splitting problems in my rifle with original or Aguila ammo but have heard of the case splitting issue. I've chronographed the Aguila ammo and it runs about 100 fps faster than manufacturers advertised velocity in my 592 though.

Nice story and glad you got it back. I recall seeing them in the gun rags back in 69-70. Heard they were a quick round for the day. Too busy with my new 10/22 back then and not a lot of spare cash to try one. Great when a company steps up and makes the ammo again.

I obtained one a few years back from a friend who needed cash. It was the one with a tubular magazine, not detachable. I had grabbed a couple of cases of Aguila ammo before it disappeared plus had a couple of boxes of Centurion. My grandkids prefer my 22 magnum so I sold the Remington this year to a guy who had been looking for one for years.
Back when I hunted whitetails in the Blackbelt of Alabama, there were 2 brothers who came to my uncle's lodge every year and both used that round for those big deer. They only shot them behind the ear. They were the only paying hunters who were allowed to shoot any caliber smaller than a .270.

Aguila started making the 5mm RF ammo in around 2008. I read something suggesting they still sell it but I have not seen any for a long time, could be that there remains a large inventory in Mexico. Somewhere I have some Aguila advertising material about it.
Speaking about old odd calibers does anyone want to talk about the Daisy VL? Any collectors?

I was in love with that cartridge and rifle as a kid. Being the typical broke kid, I couldn't justify the cost of the ammo over .22lr. I did have a Remington 581 that I carried everywhere. It was the .22lr version of yours, with a five round detachable magazine. Enjoy your prize.

I had one. I picked it up in a collection I'd purchased but sold it since it didn't really appeal to me.

I remember now, I traded the 5mm for a Winchester pump 22. The 22 barrel was aluminum with a steel liner and jacket. I lend it to my brother and it was stolen from his truck.

I have had a 591M for 50 years. Bought it to shoot groundhogs, but I wanted more range and bought a .222. I lost it for 25 years, then found it in the trunk of an old car. Thx to Aguila, I took it to the range a year ago. Accurate. Fun gun to shoot.
Very plain gun. Strong action, with Weatherby style bolt lugs. Over engineered.
