I found this gun for sale at a local dealer: 2.75" barrel, 3 sets of grip panels, soft case, 1984-85 manufactured per Ser. #.
He's asking $850. Looks like stainless steel and the hammer has that decorative etching, or whatever it's called. I'm going up to check it out today. The picture isn't that detailed, but it almost looks like it has been chromed or something.
If it seems to be in good working order, I think I may bring it home today, or at least put half down for a few days.
I don't see these come around very often, let alone with a 2 3/4" barrel. Would someone tell me it's too much money, or does that price look almost fair?

Those Six model Rugers are nice but not $850 nice. I would guess $200-300 high. Bargaining time!

I agree it’s too high by maybe $200, but if you want it, are you gonna let $200 stand in your way? If you own the gun for 10 year, that’s $20 a year for owning that gun. $1.50 a month gonna stop you? You rarely see them in person. You can find them on gunbroker for a bit less but then to have shipping and transfer fees.

The jeweled hammer would be a negative for me. Fortunately you can find used hammers on eBay or gunbroker for $30 or so and they drop right in with no fitting.

$850? What does he think he has, a S&W???? Lol! Would love to have another Ruger Six series. Particularly a Speed Six. Particularly one chambered in 9mm. Recently picked up a Security Six after about ten years of looking. Loved it, but couldn't turn down the chance to swap it for a 1964 Colt Trooper.

That one is all dolled up for sure. It's been polished, jeweled hammer and trigger, custom grip (looks like maybe badgers). Might have had work done inside too.

LGS yesterday had a four inch blued one for $850.00. It was in good condition, no box. Nice revolver but I felt it was at least $150.00 too high.

On the other hand, the amortization theory KBM expounds at only $1.50 per month to take ownership makes a lot of sense.😁

Yes, I thought about the hammer & trigger blinged up. On a Ruger, it's comparable to chrome plated tracks on an Army tank. I'll see what the other two sets of stocks look like. I'd bet the ones on it now would be the nicest of the 3. I'd hate to add any more money with buying a new hammer & trigger, but they are easy to drop out to change. I'll be visiting a good friend today that lives pretty close to Verona so it won't be out of my way to stop & look it over. I have two Security Sixes, 4" & 6" so it'll almost fit in. They're very good shooters, especially the 4". I'll have to do some real soul searching, but kbm6893 up there should be a new car salesman! ONLY $1.50 more a month (assuming I live ten more years!) I've got the two angels, one each shoulder playing "good guy/bad guy". Then there's the fact that I have my $500 deductible coming back to me from an accident my daughter had & they ruled it was the other person's fault. I do know if it checks out okay for me, I'm gonna buy it! I appreciate the help, and I'm pretty sure I knew it was going to be priced too high; that's why I asked, to be sure. I have a Charter Arms .357 that's only been out once, but I won't get more than $200 for it if I'm lucky, so that's a no go and it would be the only thing I have that I would part with. But not for $200. I need a beer!

I'm always amazed to see on here how people find a way to grossly overpay for a gun. Didn't overpay just bought too soon . Sure. It's only money, you DESERVE to have anything you want. Right. Spend your money, get rid of it. Ask yourself one question. If you pay $850 + tax and any other fees and for some reason want to sell it a year from now, who is going to give you back what you paid for it? There are better guns to be had than that thing, like a really clean S&W model 28-2 .357. And as for three pair of grips, how many pair can you put on one revolver at a time?

If you want it and convince yourself that you have to have it, you'll overpay. I've done it many times over the past 50+ years, but can't do it now on a fixed retirement income. A few weeks ago, a local gunshop had a 2 3/4" stainless Speed Six .357 in excellent shape for $599. It was gone in a matter of a couple of days after he put it out for sale! I've had several Security Sixes and Speed Sixes over the years and they are excellent weapons.

I have owned a few of the 2 3/4 inch Rugers over the years. That would include the Speed 6, Service 6, and Security 6. I appreciated them but push come to shove, much preferred my Smith 65s and 66s.

Speeds are always the highest priced versions of the Six series. Nice guns, I have one, well all three versions actually. $850 is high but not stupid high. Not sure what to make of the refinish. I doubt I'd buy at $850 but I would look at it close.

Well, I looked at it, touched it, etc. The darned action is smooth as, well, nappy silk! Long story short, I put it on hold with no money down for one week to think about it. I mentioned I like it but the blinged out trigger and hammer, while maybe thirty years ago it was cool, is a deterrent for me. I’ll be paying less than that asking price, as a longtime customer, blah blah blah, out the door. I may trade something for it, but I have a week to think about it. No harm no foul. I’m not sure if I have anything here to trade. He has a nice old Super Blackhawk for 6 bills but I don’t care for the 7” barrel. I’ll see how I feel about it next week. It’ll be an out the door price and less than $850 for sure. Heck, I might see if I can bundle both Rugers. I need Limu Emu (and Doug!)

The Speed-Six was a semi-grail gun for me. One finally appeared on consignment at our range's pro shop. $750 which I knocked down to $700. After servicing and shooting it, I discovered how heavy (almost clunky) it was, how it shot to the left and how painful to shoot with factory grips. Pair of Pachs stopped the pain, but sorry to say, it didn't handle as smoothly as a Smith snub. I hid it in the safe where I don't have to look at it, sadly.

There ya go! A one-week cooling off period is a good thing when it comes to impulse buys.

I never thought my Speed Six (2&3/4" .357 stainless) was smoother or more accurate than my 586 6". But I could do all kinds of things with it the 586 wasn't doing.

The day I got I removed the hammer and bobbed it. Made it much easir to carry in a pants/coat pocket.

I carried it all winter in the right pocket of my duty coat with two speed loaders in the left coat pocket.

I carried in a pants pocket every day on my walk from my apartment to the office to start my shift.

I carried it in the chest pocket of my bib overalls every time we went fishing (snake shot in it for fishing) and it got sweaty on the days I didn't wade into chest deep water and it spent time submerged when I did wade into deeper water.

I'd come home from a fishing trip, unload it, quickly strip it down to parts and put them on a cookie sheet in the oven at the lowest temperature and then jump in the shower and get shaved/cleaned up to start my evening shift. Pull it out, let it cool down while getting dressed and then wipe it off with an oily rag before putting it back together and loading it up to go into my pants pocket to walk to the office.

I'd have been scared to wade where it was submerged had it been anything but a Speed Six. So easy to tear down, dry out, lube up and put back together. A really cool design. Just not as smooth out of the box as my 586 and not as accurate.

I have no use at all for the big Rugers that replaced it.
