Default Which 9mm 1911 for EDC

Considering going cocked & locked for ccw. Looking for recommendations . I’m a competitive shooter in my “golden years” which has caused me to consider this. I shoot the single action pistols much better. I also, like a lot of folks, shoot larger pistols better than smaller ones. Weight is also a consideration. All comments appreciated!

There are several Mfg's listing 3 1/2" and 4" 1911, With alloy frames. In the past I had a 9mm RIA, it was a steel frame, but with shorter barrel and shorter frame it lost enough weight it wasn't bad. It was also a very accurate gun and came with all the "improvements" you would normally expect in a full size gun. I also had one of the earlier ones in 45 acp and liked it as well, but had to add sights, beavertail, bevel mag well, etd. The later 9mm I bought had it all.

The 9mm

...for cheap... Tisas Stingray....bought one and all it needed was a little trigger work...

Tisas 1911 Stingray Carry B9BA

If you want some real quality without spending a ton...same gun by Dan Wesson...Guardian...

Guardian - Dan Wesson Firearms

If you don't want a Bob Tail...then a standard Colt Commander in 9mm runs just fine...

Commander - Colt's Manufacturing LLC

Bob

ps...I am 73 and have carried a Commander in .38 Super daily since 1980...weight is about 31 oz. loaded...

I'll 2nd the DW Guardian in 9mm. Mine is probably my favorite 1911 and the one I shoot the best.

I went with the Springfield 1911 in 9mm. I've always loved the 1911 platform but figured anything other than 45 acp was sacrilege...then I shot my buddy's Colt 1911 in 9mm and I was hooked. I love shooting this thing and, of course, it's a 1911. So what's there not to like?

I have a Colt Competition in 9mm. Nice pistol.
If I were going 9mm, it would be a Hi-Power, though.
I suppose a Springfield SA-35 would fit the bill.

A lot depends on your price point. There are several good quality choices at all price points. For carry, I would seriously consider a 4" or 4.25" which is the Commander length over a full size 5" and an aluminum frame rather than steel. Many of the manufacturers have gotten the shorter slide guns to run much better than they used to but for reliability I would go with at least a 4" barrel.I mostly carry striker fired stuff at this point but I love the 1911 platform. I carried a 1911 for many years on and off duty. Once you experience a good 1911 trigger, there is nothing else that matches it. 9mm, softer shooting with more rds. on tap. BuL Armory mades some great ones for the money.

It’s a discontinued model but I have an excellent Springfield Armory Range Officer Elite Compact in 9mm. Aluminum Officer frame with a 4” slide and bushingless barrel. Aftermarket mag well. I changed the fiber optic front sight to a Novak night sight (sent slide to Novak). Excellent carry gun.

Depending on your size which can make a difference...either a Colt Lightweight Commander or Defender...or something from another manufacturer that meets those parameters.

I purchased a new Kimber Pro Carry II 9mm back in 2011. Haven't put a lot of rounds through it, maybe 400-500. Has never had a single hiccup of any kind. It still goes along with me from time to time on one of my "walk-abouts". MSRP is only $200 more than it was almost 15 years ago. Can order one today for less than I paid back then. I used to conceal carry it some, but I find my CC guns keep shrinking.

Hey ! My 2,000th post !
This. I have the same pistol, found a new old stock last year. I usually use it as my warm weather carry, disappears under a t-shirt in a Milt Sparks VMII. I replaced the sights from those of the Eschelon. Accurate, 100% reliable and fun at the range.

Dan Wesson ECO deserves consideration. I believe they’re discontinued but can still be found. I have one in .45 but they were also made in 9mm. Compact grip frame and 3-1/2” barrel. Shoots like it’s bigger than it really is

I’ve owned 9mm 1911’s from various makers but the best one’s I’ve ever owned with the Smith & Wesson pro series guns. I had a couple that I ran in IDPA / USPSA and they were 100$ reliable, smooth and accurate. If I were in the market I would not hesitate to go this way again.

Any 1911 in 9mm. I'd go for the cheaper imports. The 1911's are over a hundred year old design that with today's low cost manufacturing methods can be produced dirt cheap. If your in a shooting contest it's going to be up close and personal so the only thing important thing is reliability. All 1911's are reliable no matter what you pay. And why pay $$$$ when you're never going to get the gun back after a shooting.

The 1911 platform is my all time favorite pistol! I own a bunch of 1911's (mostly Colts) and in 3 different calibers, (45acp, 38 Super, 22LR). My 1911 Colt GCNM is probably my most frequently shot handgun and I don't think I shoot any other handgun as well. That said, I do not carry a 1911 for EDC/CCW. Too heavy, to large, to "catchy" when carried cocked and locked and to me a 1911 is either a duty belt or garrison type belt pistol.
I purchased my very first Colt 1911 back in the very early 1980's (a Series 80 Gov't model) for the specific purpose of carrying it. Well.... I carried it for all of 2 weeks and decided it was not a carry gun for me. I could not walk 10 steps without hiking up my pants and it was just way to bulky and heavy IMHO. I still have the gun and still shoot it - but I never carry it after that experience.

Even if you get an alloy version and the size and weight are a bit less, it is still too bulky, heavy and large for a CCW IMO. In today's day and age there are much better choices for a concealed carry piece - at least for me. I still love 1911's, own a bunch and still shoot them more than any other hand gun - you just won't ever find one on my belt as an EDC piece.

And because we like pics, here’s mine. 8 rounds of Gold Dot 124gr +P backed up by 9 more will hopefully get me out of a bad situation as a non-leo “old guy” I might have to extricate myself out of. Outside of the sight change I put Talon grip tape on the front strap. During colder weather it’s my 5” Baer 1911 in .45

Tisas Tank Commander. Old school styling, all steel forged slide and frame, checkered walnut grips, Cerakoted to resemble Parkerizing, but with nice visible sights. About 33 oz plus 9 rounds of 9mm so probably doesn't weigh much different than a loaded 16-18 round polymer gun. I hear very good things about them but have never owned one but have owned Rock Island, High Standard, Iver Johnson and other budget foreign made 1911's and they have all been excellent.

If a 9mm is the caliber you're wanting for SD, EDC, CCW, I would suggest looking at a few of the new Micro 9's that have come out over the last decade. YES - I know they are plastic, I realize they have no long glorious history and most can't hold a candle to a 1911 for looks or trigger pull either, but for the purpose of CCW/EDC just make the most sense - at least to me. God forbid you ever have to use it, no sleep will be lost on the plastic Micro 9 the PD will more than likely take for the investigation. Just a suggestion to consider.

I saw something that makes me think the EMP is discontinued, which is too bad. It is nicely shrunk down to be the right size for 9mm. The classic 1911 platform is best sized for 45 ACP and Super 38.

I admit if I was willing to spend the money, a 1911 in Super .38 is fascinating. Not responsible, but fascinating.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Star BM. It's not new but handles very much like a 1911. Just a nice size and weight for a 9mm pistol. Shoots good and it's not plastic.

I also have one of a Tisas 1911 A1 US Army 9. It is very well made, full size and mimics the military issue look very well. It offers no advantage as a carry pistol than any other 1911 aside from price. They also make a steel frame Commander sized version, very much like the old Combat Commander. If it had an alloy frame, I'd be tempted.

If I'm carrying a 1911 in 9mm, it will be either my Dan Wesson Valkyrie or Vigil, both in commander size. I am also on the lookout for a DW Guardian so I'll have 3 to choose from. I am a firm believer in DW 1911's especially their 9mm pistols.

I just got a Dan Wesson PM-C. A discontinued model, but NIB. I have to put the obligatory 500 rounds through it to break it in. It is 9mm. This gun, just feels special. Kramer leather due in 2 weeks

One thing to keep in mind if considering the EMP Ronin is that it’s not made to standard size so if any parts changes are wanted/needed they will be proprietary.

My Dan Wesson Valor is one of my favorite pistols let alone carry pieces. This Valor is from the “Golden Era” 2016 and has been flawless.

The original emp 3” or emp4 is hard to beat. I have both. New 3” are on gunbroker. The 4” can be had sometimes on there. I prefer the stainless slide over the new emp ronin with the blue slide. I’ve put atleast 1k rounds thru the 3” and a few hundred thru the 4”. Both shoot and function excellent. The 3” is in my carry rotation in a Mitch Rosen owb holster. Haven’t bought a holster for the 4” yet.

I was going to suggest a Star BM, but a quick online search showed that pricing on those has gone north of $400. For that kind of money I'd buy a new Tisas.

Not really a 1911 Guy - But-
A few ago my Buddy and I bought a collection which included a Dozen 1911s.
The one that I thought about keeping was an Officers Model in 9mm.

I've toting a Wilson EDC X9 almost daily for a few years now. Get some quality leather from Milt Sparks it makes carrying it a breeze.

Commanders were my EDC go-to for many years. I have a few...

My favorite was always a Kimber CDP Pro in .45, though I have steel frame, alloy frame and 2011 in 9mm these days. Any quality 1911, tested and vetted with carry ammo, and with the features you like would be a good choice. I prefer an alloy frame for CCW, but if you intend to shoot it a lot, a steel frame may be a better choice.

Which location? Never had to use mine (Thank God) but horror stories expound. But if you want a 1911 in 9mm for EDC there is no use in carrying an expensive gun. I have 3 (or 4) 1911's and consider them excellent pistols. One is a no name and shoots very well. They all hit the target in the 9"stomach area at 15 yards so why carry a $2000 gun you may or may not ever see again. My advice if from a 20 year ex-policeman. Then again if I'm going to carry a 1911 again it will be with 45ACP and 8 rounds.

I love my Springfield Range Officer Compact. It's CCO size with slim grips. I bought mine new and it's been reliable as a Glock since day one. The FO front sight is nice, but TFO would be better. I just think that a BHP is bulky, I just don't care for a wide grip for concealed carry.

Default Purpose of EDC? reliability vs cost

For most all my adult life my EDC was a J Frame S&W, several years ago I bought a used S&W M&P 2.0 Compact. The used package was complete, and out the door cost was around $300.

I already had a Kydex SafariLand GLS that fit just fine. Have now got pretty decent with practice and it is now my EDC.

Why you ask??? Fantastic plastic, striker fired??? Horror of all horrors!!!

I did ask myself....what if I actually ever had to ever use my piece in a situation? Is the extra five rounds in my pocket in a Bianchi Speed Strip really going to be able to get into play? Will the five rounds aboard my M36, M60, M637, going to be enough? Should I be concerned that the gun will most likely be kept by authorities? Is there a better solution?

My personal answers came up short for my collectable S&W wheel guns, but not for the M&P 2.0. Plenty of capacity, hits what I want (after many months of practice, but now good), serves the purpose of self & wife protection while out and about and best of all: IF I ever had to use it and it was confiscated I would sure be worrying about a heck of a lot of other things, but wouldn't care less about the gun at all.

I do also have a bunch of full size 1911's, mostly in 45 acp, but a M39-2, and a Model 639 are in the stable, too large and too valuable to EDC.

Chip—1911 and 9mm are two sets of numbers that should never appear in the same sentence!

But I do realize there are a lot of NICE 1911’s in calibers other than .45 ACP which God and John Moses Browning intended to be shot from the pistol.

I have 2 guns that are slated for carry. One is a Glock 36, 45acp and a Tisas9mm commander size stingray. I just got the stingray, and I have about 75 rounds through it, and I need to pump a few hundred more to check reliability. So far not any kind of a hiccup.

I too am concerned of having an expensive piece confiscated

If you are right handed and your competitive shooting experience includes drawing from the holster and operating the manual safety, then you might want to consider the Ruger SA1911 in 9mm. I have the all steel one in .45 ACP from the custom shop and it is a well-built and reliable pistol. If your competitive experience doesn't include drawing and operating a 1911 manual safety, I'd suggest a different handgun, like a Sig P365.
