CNY
Over the past few days, I've gotten PM's and e-mails from other forum members. I don't recognize their forum names.

All they say is..."What's your location".

No reason is given, no signature, nothing.

Am I weird or something? If I'm sending somebody a message asking their location...wouldn't it be common courtesy to state why you're requesting such information? Like...I'm interested in purchasing the rifle (or whatever) you have advertised on S&W Forum?????

Just a thought...

The only reason I can think of for sending such an inquiry is if a seller is saying he will do a FTF.

I have seen a number of posts where the seller says only FTF or that a FTF is okay, but doesn't put his location in the post.

Sometimes, they will say "FTF" and have something in their post or profile that says "Florida."

Florida is a big state, not wide, but real long.

If I saw such a post, I might just PM saying, "What's your location," expecting the Seller would know why I am asking.

BTW, did you happen to ask them why they were inquiring?

I can understand your point; as a matter of fact it sounds kinda creepy, like they want to case the place or something.
To be honest though, I was gonna PM you about your stands. They look great from the pictures you posted.
Do you ship them all over the place or just locally? I wouldn't mind tryin' one out. (maybe that's why others wanted your location.) Still they should've given a reason.

G-Mac,

Gotta be related to a WTS of yours (or there's evil a-brewing, put on your tin foil hat ) but I agree with you in that a tad more info would be expected/required. I've had an email or so like that in the past....

Maybe if you a little more descriptive than this "Location: Right next to a S&W" you wouldn't get so many emails.

I agree, paranoia is a strange thing. I have no idea why people are afraid to list the state where they live, except if they're ashamed of it. Its not like they'll zero right in on you if you say "Florida". You could even live in RI and they wouldn't have a chance of finding you.

G-Mac:

You bring up an excellent point, one which happens to be one of my pet peeves.

I have been the recipient of similar terse messages requesting "Where are you?" without explanation, which I have assumed are related to a current Classified FS post I may put up. As a result, I have concluded that an alarming percentage of the population is dispossesed of basic courtesy in written communication.

As another example, there's a classified bulletin board service here in PA operated by one of the ISPs. There's a firearm section, and I usually browse there a couple times a day. More than half of the advertisements are not suitable as FS ads. For example, the following are typical of the subject line of these FS posts:

"Gun"

"Deer gun"

"Winchester" (That's narrowing it to four or five dozen models, if it's a gun and not ammo.)

"30-30" (gun or ammo?)

"Rifle"

"Very Nice!"

"Ultimate Varmint Rifle"

Click on a subject, and these are typical descriptions:

"BASIC MODEL 94. GOOD DEER RIFLE FOR KIDS OR WIFE. SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY BY PHONE TO 555-1212. NO TRADES. CASH ONLY. FIRM ON PRICE." And there's no price listed.

"Want to Buy: im looking for a rifle to hunt bear and maybe some deer. what do u have?"

"7mm mag excellent condition custom stock and scope. 555-1212"

"Old shotgun. I think its 12 gage, but might be 20." No mention of number of barrels, manufacturer, etc. And no contact information.

And one of my favorites:

Subject: "Like to get a good deal on a gun"

Description: "Would like it to be 100.00 or less" No clue given as to the desired weapon being a rifle, shotgun, or handgun. Makes one onder if it's a case of "any gun will do, as long as it's a gun." Hmmm.

People are either inexperienced at selling and marketing, or it's a case of being just plain stupid.

What's really creepy is when you get a PM saying they know your location. Exact location.

I've never understood the reluctance of folks to post their state of residence. At least in a classified ad.

Yet you'll send a complete stranger your home/work address/phone number when making a deal to buy/sell unseen items.

In the immortal words of JJ Cale:

"I ain't hidn' from nobody,
nobody's hidn' from me."

Precisely. That's the OP's point. One can assume anything, but unless the inquiry specifies the reason for such a request, it leads one to wonder about the inquirer.

I suppose I am an old fuddy-duddy, or worse!
