The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Bought my 28-2 (serial # N2827xx) new sometime in the middle to late seventies from Ashland Shooting Supplies in Ashland, Ohio (they used to be a big Smith distributer but have long been out of business). It is pinned and recessed. I routinely keep the box, receipt, manual, etc. for all of my firearms but, strangely, I can't find any of that stuff that came with my 28. At least I didn't lose the gun!

I just bought a 28-2 for knocking plates around . It has a 4 digit serial # ,N45xx . Used it the other night and just have to get used to the trigger . It came w/pac's on it but would like advice on what originally came w/it . W/try pics in the future . Thanx in advance . Tom C

I am the happy owner of a M 28-2 4".
its in great condition and is very mechcanicly sound.
I am really looking forward to putting some rounds through this gun.
I forgot to mention that it is a non-pinned recessed cylinder -2 model with a SN# of N9529XX

FWIW,

I received a factory letter on Monday regarding my 28-2 6". It left the factory on September 1, 1978, and was shipped to Wischo KG, Erlangen, West Germany. A pic of it is on page 15.

I guess this belongs here...

New to me, and my one and only HP, sn N536896:

Model 28 # N955620 was my very first handgun, bought at a hardware store in Lavonia GA for $199.99 new in the box. That was 1984. Still have it. Will get some pics up asap. Joe in GA

This is the one that I own, Purchased from a fellow Forum member, Super shooter, what a rush. Would like a DOB Serial # N504xxx.
S&W all the way!!!

Still haven't mastered the photo thing, but I have a 6" pre 28 serial number S 129113 with box.

I have one with the six inch barrel and a SN S1291xx, within 50 of yours. Mine is with the box and instructions. I do not believe it has been fired. Price on the box indicates the selling price was $75.00.

If you want to make a quick buck on that old antique oldogy, I'll double the price on the box and will even pick up the shipping costs. I'll pm you with my mailing address.

Here is a picture of a 4 screw 4" pre model 28 Highway Patrolman that I picked up a few weeks back. Someone here on this forum dated it approximately in 1957.

Ok for the database is my 28-2, 4" that I traded for two weeks ago. SN is N2561xx.

What I WISH I still had was the 4", 5-screw, pre model-number that I traded off about 10 years ago. It was SN S110231 and had a very nice set of diamond Magna's that were serial numbered to the gun. Yes, I know trading it off was stupid that is why I replaced it with the one above.

Has anyone lettered their early first year guns ? I'm curious if a large amount went to LE departments , individual officers or mainly civilian sales ? Just curious , thanks .

Well, I lettered mine, S1101**, I think it is 3rd month, mine shipped May 17, 1954 to a hardware store in Kansas City, MO. Hope this helps.

...

I found a nice and tight patrolman 4" at the local gunshop.

It is a little beat up on the outside especially from holster wear and pretty dirty all over, BUT

I'm in California and they are asking 550.

Fair price or offer a little less?

I need one good .357 and I was originally looking for a 327 or 627 but these are growing on me, as I just picked up a tight 28-2 model 29 that had also was brought in a little dirty and with a good amount of holster wear. That one was 675 out the door.

I don't know about prices in Kalifornia but in the condition you describe, $550.00 would be very steep around here. For that kind of money, you should be able to get one in excellent to very good condition-at least, in my neck of the woods.

Here's mine. I bought it at a local gun store a few years ago for $350 including a holster....sold the holster for $50. N91946. It's pretty decent except for that scratch under the thumb latch.
I added the pc magnas and T-grip.
