I'm considering buying a S&W 4006 police trade in , in very good cond. It is missing the safety / de-cocker lever on the right side. It's round base is still there, just the lever isn't. Besides the obvious, will it's absense have any affect on function , shootability, other mated parts being affected or any other issue I should be aware of ? Thanks

4006

When in doubt of any kind do not buy. The 4006 is a heavy gun to carry but is fine for range/outdoor work.

You can pick up an ambi M/S lever kit (#19176) for around $35. It includes the plunger and spring which you will also need.

If the rest of the gun is in good shape go for it. The 4006 is a great pistol, light recoil, accurate, and it doubles as a club when you run out of ammo :). Of course I may be a little bit biased since my first handgun was a 4006. It is still one of my favorites.

The ambi portion of the safety pops right on. It doesn't keep any other part of the gun from working just fine.

I do not appreciate your man up Nancy comment.

The fact that it is heavy may detract from someone else who is buying it for carry. I feel there are better carry guns.

Nevertheless, like all 3 rd gen smiths, the 4006 will last a very long time.

Nothing else to say.

Easy guys. This board is supposed to be fun and relaxing.

The original poster specifically asked about function and shootability. Carry was not mentioned.

Try smiling.

Once you sort out the decocker problem, I would recommend getting a Hogue grip for the gun. I had a 4006 with the factory grip (which I like) and for some reason or another, I could not get that gun to group shots very well. I sold it and just recently picked up a 4046 DAO that came with the Hogue and now it seems that I can control the gun a little better which has resulted in me shooting this gun considerably better than the 4006. Now maybe the 4006 just wasn't a good gun, but I think the grip gives me that much more control, and a better feel for the weapon, hence the better grouped shots. Then again, maybe it is all in my head. Whatever the reason, the Hogue grip on my 4046 has helped me be a better shooter.

I carried a 4006 as my duty gun for over 10 years after we were forced to give up our Colt 1911s. After I mastered the DA trigger then SA after that I really grew to like the 4006. It is a tad heavy for concealed carry but as someone pointed out it is indestructible. Now that I'm retired it is my bedroom gun. I too like the feel of the Hogue grips on the 4006. Because of its new job as the bedroom gun, I would like to equip it with Trijicon Night Sights but just haven't gotten around to it. .. Big Cholla

I've got a police trade in 4006 that I love. I CCW it regularly.

Hogue grip makes it a bit thicker but well worth it.

Nice to carry. The weight isn't an issue if you have a good belt designed to carry a gun on. A Wal Mart special will sag.

I concur. You need a good leather holster and belt to carry these heavier S&W 3rd gens.

I would definitely buy it. I have a 4006tsw. I love mine! It has been a little heavy to carry around, but it is well built. I wanted it a little heavy as a personal preference. I've gotten pretty good with mine. It has been very reliable and accurate. The only thing I am not fond of is there isn't much of a place to put your left thumb (if your right handed). It has a big slide stop. I got used to it, so I'd give it 5 stars!
