Please excuse my photography skills, I am very new at this. I purchased this pre 29 about 15 years ago at a gun show. At that time I just liked big caliber S&W's. A young man was selling his desceased fathers guns and after we agreed upon a price of $350 he pulled out a presentation case and a pair of grips he thought went with the gun (it had Pachmayrs on it). I didn't realize what I had until about 5 years ago when I found this forum. I have shot it several times and it is very accurate weather it be hand loads or factory ammo.

January, 1957 must have been a busy time in the .44 mag assembly area. S153234 shipped Jan. 11, 1957 (in case you can't read the letter).

thats a great story. you got the case and the correct grips after the deal was done, wish all gun deals would turn out that way. very very nice!!!!!!!

Mike...great looking 4-inch 44 Magnum!!! S&W shipped most of their 5-screw 44 Magnums with a 4-inch barrel in the first few months of 1957.

Very nice Mike!!!

FWIW mine also shipped as a 4" barrel, but was later returned for a 6.5" replacement.

Mine shipped to Gopher Shooter's Supply in MN.

Here's another family member. Serial number S168332, five screw that was shipped 5-20-57 to House Hasson Co. in Knoxville, Ky.
Front sight has been changed to a Gold Bead.
This is one of my favorite 44s to shoot.

Man...that one shipped late. That's the latest shipped 5 screw I have heard of. I used to own S172439 4 screw that shipped in April 1957

Curtis...4-inch barreled 5-screws shipped as late as May 57 and a few even later (December 57 is the latest I know of and it has a serial number in the S147000 range...if I remember correctly). Also, a group of 5-screw 44 Magnums in the serial number range of S170000 to S175000 was shipped in mid-57. One of these is a 4-inch, 5-screw, S174042, shipped on June 3, 1957. Also, S130756, a 5-screw with a 6 1/2-inch barrel shipped on May 31, 1957.

Thanks, I just noticed Fisher's gun shipped in May. I no longer find serial numbers all that odd, but I do find it odd that there were 5 screws with higher numbers than 4 screws.

Curtis:

There is a consecutive serial numbered pair of pre-29's where the earlier gun is a four screw and the latter one is a five screw! I believe they were in the mid to late S-160,000 range.

really late pre-29 5 screw

I have a 5 screw Pre-29 with a four inch barrel that Roy says shipped in January of 1958. I have not lettered the gun yet, but plan to do so in a few weeks. I think that would make it one of the latest four inch five screws to ship. I will update this topic when I get the factory letter.

The gun was listed on gunbroker and the seller was 45 minutes away from Nashville. I met him in person and picked the gun up. It did not have the right grips, box or tools. But, I have since fixed all of that :)

I would like to own that pair, if you know where they are.
