I am a novice to carry other than pocket holster with a PPK or similar size. I am not sure I like belt holsters outside the belt. If I got an inside the belt I would have to buy all new pants as I am down to 1-3 pairs that I can barely get into now. How does everyone like shoulder holsters? I wear a coat much of the time but when summer comes I don't. Gun will be a H&K USP Compact

I think Flop means "buy more pants" and use an IWB holster now. Get a shoulder holster later. (Correct me if I am wrong, Flop.)

Shoulder holsters look cool but are of limited practical use.

Yes, I have one; it's used almost exclusively whilst I'm driving or riding in a vehicle. Even then you have to wear a jacket of some type.

Be safe.

When you are not wearing a coat put the shoulder holster under your shirt. I have been using shoulder holsters for 45 years. 2 1/2 in. K frame to 6 1/2 in. N frames and 1911 Colts. Larry

D, if a guy only has 1-3 pairs of pants that work, and they're tight, I'm guessing money is an issue. Since he can pocket carry now, he doesn't have to go unarmed. If more pants and an IWB holster are doable, great, but the man should have more pants.

There's no shame in being down with money in this economy (believe me, I'm in Michigan. This place sucks severely), do that which is most important as money allows.

I carry a 1911 in a Galco Miami Classic.
Once you get it adjusted, its fine.
I normally carry either IWB in a lobogunleather or strong side in a Bianchi carry lok.
The shoulder holster is great while driving and for under a jacket.

My bad, Flop. Wasn't looking at it that way and shoulda kept my big "mouth" shut. Sorry. :o

Money is not an object..........pride of the waistband is though. I am holding out until Lent

I carry my HK USP in a Blackhawk Serpa Paddle Holster. If I decide to carry my 29, I'll use my Lawman Leathergoods Dirty Harry. I kind of like the way the paddle feels. As has been pointed out, under a jacket or shirt is mandatory for a shoulder holster.

I carry my 5906 in a Galco shoulder holster and it is comfortable. The hold down loops have disappeared so I need to pick up a set but i still use it when I plan on spending a lot of time in the car.

I have a Ken Null SMZ for my 640-1 and I really like it,especially in the winter under a sweatshirt, just push the revolver up 1/2" and twist out.It is simpler than it sounds.

bagmaster shoulder rig ; I wear it alot in the cooler months but It does work well under a tee shirt that is one size bigger than you normally wear .You don;t have a super quick draw from under a tee shirt but effective ..

+1 on the Null SMZ rig. It's also very good for summertime use if you wear a white Under Armor type tee-shirt, then apply the SMZ, and use an unbuttoned aloha shirt as a cover garment. The SMZ can be had with the straps in white or black and with the white straps on a white tee-shirt the rig is very hard to spot. I have an SMZ for my J frames, as well as one for my K frames. A 2.5 inch K frame works pretty good, but a 4.0 inch one is a bit too heavy for me.

Best of luck,

Dave

I like the shoulder rig in the winter only. Any size or weight since it's distributed through the shoulder & back...Try it..

When I lived in NY (left in 1985) I loved carrying in a shoulder holster. Most comfortable to me. Here in Florida where we have winter for 2 weeks it isn't practical (I don't wear a suit to work)

The only one I've ever had any luck with is the Ken Null and an Airweight J frame. I've always thought a double rig would ride best but never tried it.

I carry a model 640-3 in a Ken Null city slicker under my shirt. Once you get it adjusted to your body shape, it literally disappers. I wear a shirt that has a pattern on it. Don't wear a solid colored shirt. The pattern breaks up the lines of the holster. The "busier" the pattern, the better.

While it is against what I teach my CHL classes and what I teach my fellow officers I have to admit that I use several different holsters. My go to in cool weather is my Galco Miami Classic. I like my Black Hawk Serpa with the paddle attachment in warm weather, I tilt the angle so that when I sit in my vehicle I can move it to the left side as a cross draw. When I get to where I am going, I can move it to the strong-side.
