New Smith Products-Polymer revolver and .380 auto

The .38 looks interesting, not nearly as ugly as the Ruger LCR, and no obvious IL. Could be a winner as a BUG.

Nice to see them one-up Ruger on the .38 (like Ruger did to Kel-Tec on the P3AT); what goes around, comes around.

Does anyone have the word on whether the slide will lock back on empty on that 380 auto? I have an LCP, and that is my only complaint. I do not think the addition of a safety on that model is needed, and the lasers should be optional IMHO in order to offer a lower MSRP. If I have to pull that little gun, I doubt I will take the time to flip on the laser switch up by the muzzle.....

I think they will 1 up Ruger on performance and quality, but I have a feeling that MSRP will be significantly higher. Just a hunch....

Hit the 360 degree button and I think the lock becomes obvious.
How about the ambidextrous cylinder release?

After looking at it again, maybe it's not the lock. Can't tell for sure.

I think its an allen bolt holding the polymer part of the fame to the metal, there is another one in a different location on the other side that looks exactly the same. Of course it could be a second IL, with S&W one can never tell. :)

Here is a pic of the left side:

Here is the right side. Note the same thing, what I think is an allen bolt, above the trigger:

You maybe right. I noticed when I looked at it again it is not in the same location on the frame as the lock. Maybe S&W is getting the message.

Any mention of the revolver being rated for +P? I see the lack of a Hogue Tamer grip as being a serious omission. Then again if the revolver isn't +P rated, then maybe the Tamer grip is less necesssary.

Also lasers aren't for everyone. I'd like a non-laser version.

Ambi cylinder release in a non-tradional spot is a negative for many right handers.

It does say 38 Special +P in the little box. I don't get the cylinder release. If I have it in my left hand and open the cylinder I'd have to hold it upside down to load/unload it.???? Maybe I'm slow.

Okay, let me get this straight, they make a polymer gun that shoots +P and weighs 14.3 ounces (empty I assume) and I already HAVE a 342PD that shoots +P and weighs 9.8 ounces empty...... I don't see polymer in my future..........

Despite the ambi cylinder release, the cylinder will still open only to the left. BUT!!!!!! .........

...... the locking notches (bolt stops) on the cylinder indicate that the cylinder rotates clockwise. Am I wrong?

Unless it's got a staggeringly better trigger system like the Ruger, I just don't see the draw for a polymer 38 that does not accept existing j frame grips or holsters. A polymer semi-auto was one thing, but a polymer revolver had better have completely new internals that put the existing J frames to shame . . . especially if they're the same weight.

I handled and examined both of them yesterday at the Shot Show. I really liked the Bodyguard 380. Ugly or not it has what it takes to be an everyday carry gun for many. The Bg 38 did not impress me until the Rep handed me one without the laser in the grip. The grip was different enough to fit me perfectly. I think I could be interested in the Bg 38 without the laser. Some people's hand will accommodate the laser bulge and get an adequate if not good grip. I can't. ..... Big Cholla
