I recently bought a Mod 28. It is a good tight revolver, lock is great. Got it at a good price due to someone down thru years cutting the barrel to 3.5 inches. An after market front sight was installed. All looks good, but it is not original.

I got it with a conversion in mind. I live in Texas. Jim at Ray's Sptg Goods in Dallas was an excellent smith and could do anything. He has retired. Do not know the abilities of the new people there. Talked to them once about a job, thought they were too high. Think it would be too much for this.

Does anyone know of a good smith who won't charge an arm and leg for this? Thanks, Bob Hughes (rjh) in Texas

Andy Horvath, 14131 Diagonal Rd. LaGrange OHio 44050. 440-458-4369. He specializes in caliber conversions and has been doing them for many years. I had a Ruger done by him several years ago. There have been several articles about him written and he is in John Taffin's books as well. He does nice work.

I had Hamilton Bowen convert a model 28 to 44 spl. I want kid you and tell you that it is a cheap conversion. Of course he pays a lot of attention to details like removing the markings on the right side of the bbl. and remarking the caliber in the factory style. he also replaces the front sight with a pinned in sight that is taller.

This gun shoots better than any factory 44 spl. I own. So for me it was worth it.

A gal on here - Dixie, I think - just had some sort of .45 conversion done within the last month. I can't remember the guy's name, but he is down south somewheres Alabama, Arkansas, or Mississippi I believe. I have his website saved on my work computer. Anyways, he was well recommended and reasonably priced. If somebody else doesn't come up with his name, I'll get it to you next week. Seems like it might have been Scottish - McSomething or other. Keith44Spl's Model 27 and Heavy Duty .44 Special conversions are my favorites.

.44Spl. Conversion

Not a 28, but same kinda deal.

Now that is keener than a new speckled pup.

That's a workin' gun for sure.

Here is my Model 624 which shot patterns as a .44 Special shown after conversion to .41 Magnum. It now shoots tiny little groups! ..... Big Cholla

I have had a M28 and two Old Model .357 Ruger Blackhawks converted to .44 Special by Alan Harton in Houston, Texas. He does excellent work and is very reasonable.

David Clements here in Virginia does great work as well.

IIRC, you may be thinking of John Gallagher in Jasper, Alabama.

I own a 357 Ruger single action that is converted by David Clements and the workmanship is excellent!!!

Alan Harton in Houston will do it and do it well. Figure around $120 for the barrel rebore, $140 for the cylinder rechamber and a bit for caliber remarking, disassembly and reassembly and you gave a fairly reasonable conversion. I was just in his shop last week discussing this very topic. He has done numerous custom Ruger's for me and no one does work any finer and priced so fairly.

I like your rig. Is it factory or did you have special made. Yes sir, that is one fine holster and belt!
