Does anybody know if there is any place to buy a replacement extractor for the 15-22? I have experienced quite a few failure to extract problems. When I opened the gun up to check it out I found the extractor had a very wide gap between the extractor hook and the bolt face recess. When I took the bolt out to clean I set a 22 casing in the recess to see what kind of grip it had on the casing. It has the same problem extracting that an old Intratec Tec22 I had. I fixed the Tec22 by replacing the extractor with a Ruger 10/22 extractor and fixed the problem. It closed the gap between the hook and the bolt recess surface. I figured if I could one I could experiment with closing the gap and hence making the extractor grip the rim of the casing a little tighter. I'm pretty sure it would fix the problem I'm having. The empty casing is falling out of the bolt recess before it comes in contact with the ejector and causes a jam:eek:

Ricky,

I can't say that any web sites have replacement parts listed yet. You could email Smith&Wesson and ask them if they would send you out a latest spec extractor (easy to change yourself) and they may do it for free. Or you could send the rifle in and they will go all through it for you, and make sure it's up to the latest specifications.

Either way is worth a shot...

Pull the extractor and clean underneath.

The "old" extractor detent is round, the "new" has a couple of rims on it to keep it centered in the slot.

Not seen a "new" extractor and there may not be one. I suspect the aftermarket folks will start producing "improved" extractors in the next few months as S&W seems to be having problems keeping them in the bolts during out of battery firing.

BTW, I'm at 500+ rounds since my rifle was "upgraded to latest spec" back in late December. Only butt-deep snow has prevented me from putting more rounds down range.

Went thru a full box of Winchester 333 two days ago with no issues other than two failures to feed out of the first magazine. Hope this ammo continues to shoot well as I still have 3000 rounds left from the case I bought.

Nice to spend a couple hours shooting for $10. 3¢ a round in bulk compared to 40¢+ for 5.56mm. Quick calculation shows he at 800 rounds at 3¢ for a grand total of $24 for ammo plus $425 for the rifle. Call it $450. 800 rounds at 40¢ would be $320 so the rifle will pay for itself in another range trip or two.

Good trigger time.

Well I'm to the point that I'm going to either send it in to S&W or sell it. I hate the thought of paying almost $500 for a gun thats totally unreliable. I was so excited when I bought it but when it started all this jamamatic BS I started thinking about all the different ammo I've blasted throught in my 10/22 with not near as much grief as I've went through these last couple days. I've tried using the Winchester SuperX 40gr rn ,The Federal bulk, Winchester bulk and of course the REm GB were pittiful. The best of the bunch is the Win SuperX but I still had jams. The gun I bought is the latest version with the threaded barrel, I would love to have one that would go through a whole mag. I bet I've shot over 500 rnds since I got it last friday and out of the 500 rnds (not including the Rem GB) I'd say at least 3-5 different jams per mag. Mostly the casings fail to leave the gun in some form or fashion. I've checked the ejector and it's right where it's suppose to be.
Man this is frustrating

Well for what it's worth, mine is serial number DTMXXXX it has been back to S&W precisely one time, and it fires flawlessly aside from 1 (one) mag snag on the original "22LR" magazine and that was damn near full automatic firing... But I haven't shot many Golden Bombs through this rifle (and don't plan on it.. they cost more than Fed Bulk and are a crappy round).

I think you should send it back to S&W and let them upgrade it... And type up a polite and well worded letter about how disappointed you are and how much you would appreciate two free magazines.

Do you shoot your 10/22 with aftermarket magazines? or just the stock one's?

Hey Ricky,

The folks who have sent their's back to S&W (recently) are reporting good results. It usually only takes couple weeks or less turn around time, so what have you got to lose?

If you want to sell your 15-22 privately it might not be a bad idea to have it updated to the latest 'blue' specs anyway. If a buyer has done any research, he/she will know the issues this rifle has and will be more interested in one that is ready to rock 'blue'.

I guess I might have been a little ranty but this thing has me disappointed. The 10/22 does do well with all the 22lr I have Rem GB included but it all comes down to mags as well. I use Ram Line and Butler Creek and they all have some failures. I guess it's just the fact that I was so happy to finally get my 15-22 and then all the jams. Today when I fed it entirely Win SuperX it did go through one whole mag in my 2nd gen mag (22lr-25rd) but after that I did'nt try another full load in that particular mag. I did use the same ammo in the 1st gen mags (22lr) and had like 3-4 jams per mag. So I guess it comes down to the mags for that round of shooting. But with the federal bulk it jammed with all three mags I have 1-2nd gen and 2-1st gen. I'll contact S&W to see what they have to say.
I still think some of my problem lies with the extractor having such a large gap between the hook and the rim allowing the casing to move up out of the recess. Maybe maybe not

My extractor looks the same as that (just checked). I think your ejector may be the culprit. Take a photo looking up through the Magazine hole in the lower. Does it look like this?

Yes exactly like yours. I fired an email to S&W to see what they say about it. I would love this rifle if it would only shoot reliable

I sent an email and got a generic reply to call a 1-800 number. I called it , I expected to be greeted semi professionally but it seems the employees there are not as polite as one would expect. I got to speak to two different people and both were rather short and to the point. Defects are a serious business:D . The gentleman I spoke to never offered an email solution just said they would be sending the shipping labels with instructions, not even a good day:confused: Oh well suppose to have labels within 5 business days, I should have asked the turn around time but did'nt. We'll see I guess:rolleyes:

if you go back and read through here there hasnt been one person complain about the customer service they have gotten from S&W and i dont think anyone has had problems after they got their gun back. good luck with it. you can always go back and read through the threads and see if you can narrow down your problem. lots of interesting posts here

Must have been a bad day for the people I talked to. I used all the thank you's and pleases and yes maams and sirs trying to be polite but didnt get any reciprocation. After the gentleman on the phone told me I would have the forms in 5 business days I said thank you and have a nice day, all I heard on the other end was the click of the phone hanging up. No biggy as long as the gun gets fixed that's all I care. I just thought to myself how unprofessional

These are customer service types, not armorers or weapon repair folks. They have no clues as to how to fix anything, but will zip you a return call tag in a matter of minutes.

There is no reason not to be friendly though.. I have bad days.. I'm an IT Support guy, I deal with what I perceive to be "stupid people" day in and day out... But I am always cordial with them, I laugh with them, I joke with them. It makes their experience more pleasant, and that's why I am there...

I wouldn't expect the person that answers the main line at S&W to be able to spot off the intricacies of the AR Platform or it's History. But if they are not cordial with customers on the phone, they need to be.

IT support, You are my hero. Without you guys what would the rest of us do? I feel sorry for you and what I know you go through and if you can keep your cool after somebody says"I did'nt think that button would do any harm" My hat's off to you.
I was a little tiffed at the fact my 15-22 was'nt working right but I never even mentioned it to the people on the phone. I just played along to get it fixed;)

Ricky,

What would you do without us? Same thing I do.. Learn every way in the book how to break a computer, and then spend the next lifetime trying to figure out how to fix the infernal machines! :)

I should put a caveat in my post.. Not everyone is stupid! Someone who doesn't want to learn, that gets my goat... But I deal with many users who have a thirst for knowledge and that's what I thrive on!

I think you will be happy with your 15-22 after Smith is done with it.. I LOVE mine! :)

I agree 100%. That said, I might be wiling to cut the S&W CS folks a little slack over the 15-22. I'm sure they have taken a beating the past months from 15-22 owners. I recently talked to a large retailer (employee) who said they had taken quite a bit of grief over their 15-22 sales. Also, I was on my way home from the range today and stopped by an independent gun shop, Carters in Harrison, TN. He told me he still refuses to sell 15-22s until S&W gets things straightened out. He said an S&W rep came by and couldn't get his 15-22 to cycle worth a darn. (That was months ago). He told the S&W rep to come back when he had a rifle that worked. The S&W has not been back. That's pathetic.
