The children and i spent the day together going to dentist appointments, shoney's and to the local pawn shops. Had mostly a wonderful day until the model 48-4 squilled it siren harmony. walked into one of my favorite pawn shops and found this 8" or there abouts. heart just about to beat out of my chest until i saw the price tag $900.00 i just about had a sideways heart attack! am i just too cheap or what? i checked the timing on it and it seemed to be off on one of the cylinders. the face of the cylinder was also pinged in several places like the hammer had hit between the chambers. About that time two older men walked in that were bigger fans of smith than i or just had been collecting longer. One of the men was very well educated in the art of s and w the other was about a year or two into collecting. he brought me to my senses in which i made an offer on the 48 which was promptly shot down. After i left we went to a few more gun stores and pawn shops. the last one we went to told me they didnt deal in used guns. As i was leaving my oldest asked to go see the shooting range and as we walked through it there in the case in front of me were about 10 smith as used as they come. model 27, 19, 586,... and then in the corner was a model 34-1 without a price tag. the salesman was running his happy legs off so i waited til i had his full attention to see the gun. he said just pull out what you want to look at so i did. he didn't know me from adam's house cat. i started pawing that gun, checking the timing turned it over and the right side looked like someone had used it as boomerang/ nail puller. well maybe not that bad but pretty rough. i was preparing myself for the heavy burden of bringing another gun home when the clerk looked up as he walked into the bathroom and said that ones $550.00 and disappeared behind the door. do huh!? when the clerk came out of the bathroom he said that the man that owned it just dropped the price rom $650 this morning! i thought my world had just ended like my puppy died or something. what is up with these rediculous prices? is it me or should i have just paided the price? the model 19 with beutiful target grips was $200 cheaper. i guess i'll just have to wait for someone who needs to pay child support before i can afford a 22 smith and wesson. well i did walk out with 2 pair of roud butt k frame grips that were like new. Yeah I thought about picking up a 22cal K frame just for a good practice gun until I started looking at prices. My jaw hit the floor to say the least. Have an older friend that could write books on S&W's and he has several of each models. Really nice guns but man, I can't see paying what they ask for them just for a practice gun.

They are super hot sellers right now because people are turning to them for the joy of shooting because center fire ammo is high priced and scarce. A $16 22LR bulk pack of ammo provides an aweful lot of shooting fun. I currently have four 22 caliber S&W revolvers and I bought the last two at a gun show a week and half ago for $1100 out the door which in todays market is a very good deal. They were both 98% guns and one is for my girlfriend who because of a motorcycle accident can only handle the recoil of a 22. I bought a 17-4 with 6 inch barrel and a 18-4 with a 4 inch barrel and the 18-4 is for my lady to shoot.

Doeboy...I am familiar with the shop where you saw that 34. I've had my eye on it for a month or so waiting for the owner (consigner) to come to his senses on the $650 price tag.

Glad I didn't jump on it as I found a really nice 34-1 round butt in Asheville (Liecester Gun & Pawn) Monday night in just as good shape, no box though, for $400 OTD.

My advice is to keep watch on the auction sites and wait. You can still find them for "ok" prices. The

I the past three months, I have purchased a 17 for > $400 and a pre 34 for > $550. (Neither where show pieces but they were not overly worn.) In my experience the stainless models are those in the highest demand. In the past 6 months, I have not seen a "good" price on a 617.

I bid on just about any S&W .22 that is less than $450.
(Wait a minute. Forget that advice. I don't need more competition. )

Wow, right after I posted this, one came up for sale on this forum. Oh no, more temptation.

Doeboy1,

EVERY price you mentioned was WAY too high for a perfectly functioning gun in VERY good cosmetic condition. Study the prices here for a while, and know that they are usually a little high because we all like S&Ws. And remember that the guy who is telling you this is in MA, where prices on most older guns SHOULD be expected to be higher, because we mostly can't get them from outside the state.

Pawn shops are run by all different kinds of people with all different kinds of ideas on how to price things. I don't know enough to tell you all the ideas they have in their heads, but YOU have to know what something is worth, and how to test it. THEN you can sometimes do very well in SOME pawn shops. Others may never settle for a fair deal.

I heartily agree with fyimo.
22's will be the new bigger better deal due to cost.
I just bought a Buckmark with a Tac Sol barrel to shoot with my 41 on rimfire range days.

My much loved kitgun and a Glock and 1911 topend round out the rimfire rifles as my version of expense averaging.

A friend is looking to sell me back a 4" 617 that I had round butted, I think I'll graciously accept.

I'm happy to let you shoot it anytime you like! But...I picked this one up for my 3 year old to have some day. So far he has this and my grandpa's Marlin 39a reserved for him.

Nice set of guns that little guy is going to get. I love my Marlin 39 ltd as much as I love my S&W wheelguns.
