Hello everyone. New guy here. I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for their help and share my experience with you.

I purchased an M&P 15-22 at the gun store on a whim. I went there to buy a Ruger 10/22 to shoot with my 10 year old son. I saw the 15-22 on the shelf and HAD TO HAVE IT. I own a colt M4, so I am already familiar with the AR platform. My thinking was that I could stay proficient with the platform for cheaper. I also thought the collapsible stock would be a better fit for the short length of pull my son requires.

I took it to the range, and it worked beautifully. It came with one of the new "25 Rounds" magazines. I shot Federal Bulk, Federal Lightning, Winchester Super X and CCI standard velocity. I got a couple of failure to feeds with the Winchester, but I now attribute that to incorrect magazine loading. I have since followed the magazine loading instructions on this forum, ensuring the proper staggering of the rounds, and now the Winchester feeds fine.

I decided to purchase an extra two magazines from my gun store. I took them to the range, and began having failure to eject and failure to feed issues. At this point I was not aware that it could possibly be the magazine. They looked identical to me and I did not notice the "25 rounds" printed on the mag that came with the gun was missing on the two I had purchased from the gun store. I began to get very very frustrated. I searched the internet which led me to this forum.

I made another range trip to see if proper magazine loading was the issue. With a properly loaded magazine, the "25 rounds" mag was flawless. I put at least 500 rounds through it. The "22 LR" mags, however still gave me issues, even though I confirmed the rounds were staggered.

I wanted to share my conclusion is that the 22 LR mags simply do not work well with my gun and must be defective. I have contacted Smith and they are sending a shipping tag to return the two defective mags. They were polite and very apologetic.

Once the replacement mags come in, I'll report here to give you guys an update.

I think my gun must be a newer model because it has the built in flash hider. It does NOT have blue springs on the bold assembly or trigger assembly however.

I just ordered a Vortex Strikefire for the gun since I have an aimpoint on my Colt AR. I got the new one with the brighter red dot with no green dot option. Once I receive that I'll post my opinion of the sight.

My overall impression of the gun is very very good. It is unfortunate I picked up the defective magazines, because other than that, I have had no issues with the gun. My son loves it, and I can now train for pennies on the dollar with 22 ammo. I really think that these magazines should be recalled. They can absolutely destroy the good impression someone might have from the gun. I love this gun and would but it again.

Grats on the purchase. It's awesome your son gets to shoot it too! Great thing about a .22 I suppose. I look forward to hearing if the new mags you get fix your problem, as Failure to Feeds (mag snags) is the ONLY problem I've been having with Federal Bulk, and my 3 mags are the old kind.

This might have been the first time I've heard someone say they were sending only the mags back to S&W, so that's cool and probably something I should do. Actually I did try the Winchester 333 pack for the first time last weekend and I had a BUNCH of Failure to Ejects, so I'll be sticking with the Federal Bulks.

Congrats again! I hope the new mags fix your problem!

Welcome to the Forum! And please keep up posted. That mag thing could be a benefit to many of us here.

congrats on the new toy and welcome to the forum and the disorder

do you tap the bottom of the mags when done loading..

if i dont do this chance for failure happens

Hey Guys, Danny Here... I'm a New Member and just wanted to add my experience with my 15-22.

Right after I purchased my rifle I went searching the internet and found this Forum. Thanks to you guys I've learned allot, but you also kinda scared me... but thanks for the heads up on what I should expect.

So,... on my first trip to test out the gun, straight from the store, I shot 100 rounds (Federal) without a hiccup and went home. I was happy that I didnt have any problems.

On my second trip, around Round #90-#100, i had a round blow up (OOB is what I hear around here allot). It kinda scared the crap out of me at first, but quickly realized what it was. The casing blew out from the back. I checked it, removed it, and made sure the bullet wasn't stuck in the barrel. Every thing looked good, so I shot a couple more... Thats when I started to get a couple of FTF/FTE. So I went home.

I took the whole thing apart and cleaned/oiled it very well. The next time I went the rifle worked very well... until I got to about the 100th round... That's when I started to think about it.... It might just be that it's getting a bit dirty. So we went home, since I didn't wanna end up with another OOB misfire. The one thing I did notice was how dirty the changing handle felt. It felt like it was rubbing on sand paper or something. So, I cleaned it back up.

Then, on the 3rd time, again... around the 100 mark it started to FTF/FTE.

So, besides the one encounter with the OOB, I've come to the conclusion that Maybe its not the gun (at least mine), but most likely the fact that its getting really dirty, especially since the .22LR is pretty dirty compared to other large caliber ammunition.

The guys at the range kinda agreed with the .22LR being a bit dirty,..... but, does 100 rounds sound about right??? Should it really have to be cleaned after every 100 rounds???.... Or is there something wrong with my Rifle.... because as long as it's clean, it shoots great.

Anybody Experience the same thing?

I put about 500 rounds thru mine a couple of weeks ago. No issues with Winchester 333, but CCI had some stoppages. Failure to feed.

Mine blew the extractor at round 326, 26 rounds into her second weekend. Trip to S&W and back just before Christmas. Only a handful of failures to feed since them.

I certainly do like my Vortex Strikefire. It makes things a lot easier for we old people. I think you'll like it.
