This is not a drill!: S&W 4586's at Bud's for $259 delivered!!!

We got ours tonight. My buddy and I used the same FFL dealer. Typical holster wear. Mine was dirty inside, as in shot and put away dirty. Baked on carbon on the feedramp. They should keep their duty weapons clean. Some wear on the grips. I got a blue box, but no stickers on the box, no paperwork, no nothing. Just foam inside.
His looked almost new inside, with minimal shot related wear, but his had more of the minor rust spots on the trigger, rear sight, some minor spotting in the mag well. This is stuff you looked to find, if you know what I mean. Some wear on the grips. No box.

Good deal for 259.00

I believe the 'TSW' series pistols have matching numbers on the frame and slide.

OK, the reason I asked is because I'm a dummy. I had our pistols on the table, field stripped and in the cleaning process. Get a phone call, and I come back to find an adult member of the household inspecting the neat gun parts on the table. "Did you put all the parts right back where they were on the table?" They are not sure, but probably..... So, I think I got the right slide with the right frame. How much does it matter on these pistols if the slides and frames are swapped? A custom fit pistol matters greatly, but these are fairly loose fitting slides. Any big deal if they are mixed up? Should have marked them..

I got my 4586 yesterday. The major disappointment was the slide - pitting and discoloration. I tried cleaning even using vinegar and baking soda, but nothing helped much. Then I lightly sanded with 400 grit which was probable a mistake. Anyone know how to restore SS?

I got no box, but not a big deal. On the plus side the NS's are somewhat dim but serviceable, and the frame is nearly perfect after cleaning with electrical cleaner and CLP. I don't think the pistol had been shot much, because the interior and bore were relatively pristine. A little spray cleaner and everything was fine. It has factory grips with a couple of light scratches which is fine, because I don't need the extra bulk. The interior was bone dry w/o a hint of grease or oil.

I guess my only problem is bringing back the slide, and any suggestions would be appreciated.

I NEVER EVER tear down more than one gun at a time, exactly for that reason. I'm sorry I can't help with your question, as I don't know. I guess if they both work I wouldn't worry about it. Except I would spend the rest of my life wondering.

I received my 4586 yesterday. It is really in pretty nice shape. It came in the correct blue box and, had the owners manual and warranty card under the foam.
The stainless steel was a bit "grungy" with years of old gun oil and dirt, etc. imbedded in the metal. I went to Home Depot and bought some of the green scotchbrite pads and a can of aerosol stainless steel cleaner. I sprayed the foam cleaner on the pad and gently rubbed it in in a horizontal direction. It really got the old dirt and oil out of the stainless and gave the gun a very nice look. It might help with your slide.

Mine came today and I am real happy with it. It has a few rubs and a couple of pits but none too deep. Very dirty on the outside but the insides were super clean with no noticeable wear. I would rate it at 90%. The sights were very dim, doesn't really matter to me. The Hogue grips will have to be replaced. It came in an original box with manual and warrantee card. There was also a turn in sheet from the Newport News Police Department with an officer's name and an inventory showing he turned in the pistol, 2 mags, 25 rounds of ammo and a case in Feb of 2009. It cleaned up beautifully. Sorry for the poor picture but you get the idea. Thanks Bud's for the great deal, I think it is well worth the money.

I called S&W for a SN check and mine was made in 2000. I thought it would have been much older.

4586

WOW , just got my hands on the 4586 from Buds Guns. Super clean and very little wear. now that I've inspected and cleaned it, guess I'll have to go shoot it ! can't wait

picked up Bud's Gun

Just picked up my pistol. I am so happy. Came in the blue box as expected. No papers or cards. But if this is used, well, sell me another. I will add 10%. No dings or marks or rust. Sights are a bit dim, but, so am I. The grips are stock and have a nick or two. Adds character. Broke it down and found it seemed to be well maintained and clean and bright and tight. Heading for the range this weekend. Will follow up later. Good go Bud's. Thanks.

Hi everybody, I got my 4586, a regular one, yesterday, and was very pleased with it. No box, papers, etc. One of the mags has two rust spots on it, the other is perfect. I had troubles with the good mag not keeping the slide open, but it just needed cleaning to get the crud out of it, it was nasty, the rusted one was nice and clean inside. The frame on mine is nearly perfect, what I thought was maybe a tiny bit of rust was some kind of gunk that CLP easily dissolved. The only marks on the frame are a couple of tiny nicks on the trigger guard, and one on the front end of it. The slide is a different story, the sites are barely glowing, just the slightest bit of green visible in a pitch black room. There is no rust on the slide, but there is an inch and a half long abrasion where I think the gun slid on concrete or something. It's worse than normal shiny spot holster wear, that's for sure. The inside of the gun looked great, and the bore was great after I cleaned it. The grips look almost new. I'm not too crazy about them though. All in all, a great deal for the money.

I have a question, how do you take the grips off?

Hemiram, just take the screws out and with a small screwdriver gently pry at the bottom. they will pop off. did mine yesterday and found alittle rust under there.

Well it looks like I missed out on another great deal. But I'd still like to know what is the difference between the S&W 4586 and the S&W 4553TSW? Could somebody enlighten me?

Thanks,

Snowdoggie

I think the 4553 is a compact version with an aluminum frame. The 4586 is a DAO all stainless steel

I have a question, how do you take the grips off?

If they are the Hogue grips, take out the screws and pull the grip back toward the palm of your hand. There is a lip on the grip that goes into the magwell that holds them on. A screwdriver would likely break it off.

Stock S&W grip removal is detailed in this link below. Be careful with the sideplate assembly , part number 1 in the S&W diagram, when reinstalling the grip. The forked end that the pin drives through can get bent fairly easy, then the pin won't keep the forked end down, and you end up replacing the 10.00 part.

To me, it's the worse part of the design of the 3rd generation autos. What were they thinking? Driving a pin out to remove a grip?, be careful and don't bend this?, mainspring is held by the grip?, etc. The rest of the 3rd generation design is excellent, IMO.

Well, my 4586 came in today. It's in overall good condition; there is a slight bit of pitting on the back of the slide, and some holster wear, but nothing too serious. The inside looks as if it has been fired very little. Mine came in a blue plastic box with no serial number. Inside was a 'request for issue' signed by (presumably) the last officer to have the gun. Has anyone contacted Trijicon about relamping the night sights?

Newbie here. I bought two of these and was quite impressed with their condition. A little holster wear, but mechanically perfect. I've been carrying a Taurus PT-145 for a couple of years now, so the 4586 seems a bit heavy, but I'll get used to it.
