Hey guys,
I want to swap stocks on my 15-22 but I have a CT compliant version. There is one pin on the stock now that seems like it can be removed but I don't know how to get it out. Has anyone removed it before? I want to replace it with a CTR stock in fixed position. Help would be appreciated!

i JUST DID THIS on Monday. Boy did I butcher the factory stock in removing it.

But I could NOT get the stock on cause of that damn pin, this is what I did. I have a $20 tool set from Home Depot's Husky line, it came with two sets of pliers... One needle nose, one of the short pliers that are used often for cutting wires etc.

I put those short wire-cutter-like pliers on that pin, and squeezed and squeezed for a several real hard attempts. I was actually trying to "cut" the pin off... and on my third or tenth attempt at squeezing, I guess I inadvertently pulled down or twisted WHILE I was squezzing, and the whole pin came out! it was longer than it looked, and it just pulled right out of the hole. Then I put my new Magpul MOE Stock on my NJ Compliant version no problem.

I just haven't figured out how to pin it myself, I called S&W they told me just to "drill a small hole" I just dont' know if I can, I might have to pay a gunsmith $25 dollars, and drive 45 mins, to do it for me.

hope that helps!

Damn...thanks for the help. My FFL guy was telling me that a drill press works. I didn't get all the details but it seemed like somehow he was able to use the drill press and drill into the pin and then pull down on the rifle and up on the press to separate it. Gotta be an easier way. I was unaware that installing the Magpul stock would be a problem as well. I figured it would have a way to be installed without the factory stuff.

twist and pull bro. Im 5'8' buck-fifty, and I just manned up and made that pin my b1tch and pulled it and twisted it out. and it submited to my authority and came out so I could finish my Magpul creation... I had Magpul'ed my baby all out except the damn stock, and I wasn't taking no for an answer.

Im curious to know how you like that fancier stock, I was told not to bother, that a .22 wont really see any benefit from any upgraded stock, I did the Magpul MOE for the looks, but do tell how the more expensive one works.

CTR is the same price as the MOE. Its pretty much the same stock I think. I'd love to know how you get ours to stay put. I'm not going to bother swapping if I can't get the Magpul stock fixed in place.

Is the offending pin going through the entire stock - meaning can it be seen from either side?

If so just get a punch that's the same size and push it out (or get a hammer behind the punch and whack it out).

The pin won't be deformed, the stock won't be deformed, etc. Get a drill that tightly fits in the hole in the old stock (assuming you didn't enlarge it with the punch). Put the CTR stock on, drill through where the friction lock covers when engaged. Push the old pin back in, put a spot of super glue on the ends, let it dry, then close the friction lock.

A hand drill will make the new hole, it's all plastic.

Voila- hidden pin, compliant stock, nothing broken.

The CTR costs roughly $40 more than the MOE (I think, didn't look it up). It has the friction lock which removes the wiggle of the stock on the tube, and a QD swivel attachment point over the MOE.

Thanks for the clarification Rustpot. The pin goes all the way through the stock but does not come out the other side. It must be pulled out. Believe that was the way S&W made it difficult for people to remove but not impossible if there was an actual need.

Im in Ma and I also have a fixed stock. Its just a roll pin thats jammed in there to lock it in place. Drill it out. Just go slow, and make sure your going in at 90 degrees. Start with a bit that is smaller than the pin, then move up a size to get the rest out. This will help in keeping the bit centered in the middle of the pin and keep you from drifting and butchering the stock/tube. Also dont go too deep, no need to drill all the way through. Replace with a slightly larger roll pin. Make sure its jammed in there good so theres no chance of it coming out.

Sounds like that was what my FFL guy was talking about. Where would I find a pin to use?

Can you use a screw instead of a pin? The reason I ask is because I also shoot in states where they don't have these BS laws. I'd like to just be able to put a screw in there when I come to Connecticut and remove it when I leave. Is that legal?

I feel like a screw wouldn't be allowed. Easily removable and pretty much makes the stock adjustable. Only thing I can think of is using a pin similar to whats there but uses a really small allenwrench to be removed. So it would look liken a regular pin but removable.

Not really sure. All i know now is that with my sig scope I need to shorten the stock a little to get good eye relief. As of now my check is on the edge of the stock and its not comfortable at all.

Good stuff Bos roB. Does anyone know if the magpul cheek riser will fit on the factory buttstock? It seems like it just clips into the CTR and MOE stocks in the same cut outs that the factory stock has. Just not sure if it will line up. Anybody know?

Ok I did some work and have got my stock set where I want it. I don't think I'll be swapping stocks. Maybe later tho. I'd like the CTR stock still. I couldn't figured out how to get the factory stock off the tube tho. Just wouldn't come off. Anyways, I made a quick little photo setup of what I did. Unfortunately the two bits I used were the two out of thousands I have that are unmarked, so I don't know what size they were ha.

I ended up buying a package of Set Screws from Home Depot for $0.60. 5mm/12mm. The factory pin is on the left in both pictures.

This is the difference in thickness. You can tell its much thicker than the stock pin.

So I used a drill bit and my press/hand extension to tap into the pin slightly. At the same time I slightly pulled up on an angled and the pin slid right out.

Next thing I did was drill out the stock itself to accomodate the thicker set screw.

Then I screwed the set scew in with an allen wrench

So if anyone is interested in removing the pin I think that was the easiest way. Makes it so now I can unscrew the set screw and adjust the stock if I need to and then screw it back in and make it fixed again.

:edit: It looks weird in the last up close picture but that was some plastic from the drilling. I cleaned it off afterward. I think it looks great and it works great.

I'm also in CT and I picked up my 15-22 on Sunday. I used a 5/64" drill bit to remove the stock pin. The bit is just a tad bigger than the hole in the pin so it gave it enough grip to pull it out. I'm going to replace the stock with another fixed stock off a Bushmaster lower. The hex-head bolt on the non-functional adjustment lever will lock into any of the existing indentations on the stock tube.

I bought my 15-22 off of GB and the lady was nice enough to throw in an extra 10 round mag. So I was looking at it and thought what a waste of space to make a 10 round mag the same size as the 25 rounder. Upon further examination, I figured out that there is a pin inside the mag that prevents the follower from going any further down the mag body. I took a 9/64" drill bit and eye-balled approximately where the pin was and drilled. I was off by about an 1/8". After a little bit more drilling, the pin fell out and now I have a 25 round that says 10 rounds on it :)

It was a really easy mod because I didn't have to drill both sides of the mag body and push the pin out.

can anyone post a vid or link to a vid about the pin removal? thanks.

I just posted the process to remove the pin. Don't think you're going to find a video of it but search around. Read my post again and try it. Its not complicated.
