S&W 357 Highway Patrolman Nickel Finish

I need some help, and it looks like this might be a good starting point:

I have my GrandFathers Service Revolver from when he was a United States Federal Game Warden. It is a S&W 357 Highway Patrolman, 4" Barrel, Nickel Finish, SN S1159XX. I read on here where the serial number dates it to 1954, my mother remembers when he bought it when she was a little girl so I assume the Nickel Finish is the Original. I was told that this may be a Rare Nickel Finish Salesman Model? It has no Model number on it anywhere so would it be a Pre-28 Highway Patrolman? I am attatching pics to this post. Any Information would be greatly appreciated, I can be contacted via e-mail at [email protected]

Thanks, Daniel

Generally, Smith stamped an "N" on the rear face of the cylinder and on the grip frame near the butt if it's original nickel. Also the ejector star will be blue-black (not nickel), and the trigger and hammer will be left in case-hardened finish. I don't know if they did things in this manner with the rare nickeled HP models, but it would logical to assume that they did. Check it out!

I looked at the rear cylinder face and all that is there is the original Serial Number, On the frame near the butt there are 2seperate stamps, The letter M and the letter H are stamped in 2 seperate locations on the right side of the handle frame On the left side of the handle frame there is a Number 6 stamped. The ejector Star is blued and the Hammer and Trigger are in the case hardened finish.

I noticed where the top portion of the grips have been covering up the side plates, it is extremely shiney "mirror like finish" were the Nickel weapons this shiney? Were they ever polished? Im almost starting to think this weapon may be stainless? ie.... due to the very small rust specs here and there, I have not cleaned this weapon yet, so it is still quite dirty from just sitting over the years. Attached is a pic to show where the grips covered the side plate.

Any thoughts Concerns?????........... HELP............

first, big welcome to the forum!!

secondly...well, those grips do not appear to be original to the gun (originals would have had a diamond around the crew and likely have been the smaller "magna" or "service" grips)...also, it looks like the rear sight is nickled, I think any guns of the era would have had blued rear sight...but not to worry!! I'm sure it's still a great shooter & even more importantly it's a family heirloom...

I've come to the conclusion that my Texas Highway Patrol issued Model 28 seen on page 55 of this thread has been refinished to a higher blue polish, but hey, it looks better than some & shoots very straight w/ a real sweet action! I have no complaints and it will always remain a piece of Texas lawman history...

I guess I have missed this thread. I have a 4" Highway Patrolman serial number S11017*. I'm guessing it's pretty early. I'll get some pictures up.

OK, anybody help fill me in here, if possible. Are these correct numbers? What date could they be?

I have a Model 28-2, 6", with a FOUR digit s/n. "N69xx"

And a 28-2 4" with a FIVE digit number. "N59xxx" I know that the original owner fired a whole six shots out of the 4", but the original owner of the 6" (that's me) has fired quite a few more from that one.

Thanks, and I'll try to post some pix, they are great looking guns.

N1...1969-72
N100000...1973
So both your's should be between 1969-72.
Would love to see pictures.

OK, here are some pix.

First, the 6" that I bought new in @1972.

This is the 4". It has only had six rounds fired, AFIK. The guy bought guns, fired one mag or cylinderfull, then put them away. I have no idea when or where he bought it. I got it and several others from an estate auction, there were around 300 gus sold. It had only the Pachmyr grips on it, he liked Pachmyrs a lot. But i found a good set of grips for it. I'm not sure if they are accurate for the year, but the do look like they are at home there, don't they?
.
BTW, this one is now for sale.

I just bought this 28-2 (marked) serial number N954XXX and it has recessed chambers in the cylinder. If I am reading the serial number ranges on the first page correctly shouldn't this actually be a 28-3?

Thanks,

S&W will often do transition guns...some will have pinned barrels and non-recessed cylinders while others will be vice-versa. I see no pin on your gun so I'm betting they just used an already recessed cylinder for it.

Yep, no barrel pin. Thanks.

Air Commando, that's a great find!! You just don't see that many 28's marked it seems, at least not considering the total numbers produced.

That one has personality!
