cousins DTU shot out of battery today then shot off 5 rounds at a time. He called S&W and they told him it was the first problem they had heard of with the 15-22, he directed them to this site and others. The gentlemen then asked for his serial number again and he said oh ok, does yours have the blue springs in it because, THEY ARE WEAKER* Yes, he said the blue springs were the problem springs and we know that isnt the case, and it needs to be updated (***?) The guy just told him they had never heard of problems with it, then when he says something about the forums the guy asks him for the SN again and tells him to send it in. Guy also told him that with this problem it doesnt take too long to fix. why the heck would they tell him that they hadnt heard of any problems and then turn around and say that people with this problem usually get their gun back in so and so time. Sucks for him though, we had been bragging on his rifle. FWIW he was shooting federal bulk and winchester 333. Got an OOB with both. it blew the back end almost completely out of the case of both, (ive seen pictures of what he described on here and so has he) OH well, another one bites the dust and nobody was hurt. they sent him out a box and shipping label.

Ok I guess I have just got ask then, iv had my 15-22 for 3 weeks, I have shot nearly 2000 rounds through it, I have a blue spring, and I have had zero issues with federal bulk, and about 3 fte"s with wildcat, Which I will never use again as I see it is not recommended. I have read and seen multiple OOB's on youtube and this forum, and most say that S&W's response was to send it in and they replace it with different parts and the blue spring is how you tell if yours should be good to go or not!

So my question is, how do we/I truly tell if I am in the clear or not?

The place I bought my gun from has a lifetime parts warranty on their guns, and I know S&W will fix any issues, but is there a recall on this gun or something...?
Thanks

I thought I read in previous posts that the blue springs were the FIX, not the problem. I have a DTM without blue springs and a DTU with them. When I called to return the DTU because it was shooting full auto (but only in safe mode), I was told by the CS person that the blue spring was part of the fix. Can anyone clarify that, please?

Thanks,
Frank

everyone i know and have heard that sent in a gun got blue springs in it when it came back.......... thats what we couldnt figure out. BUT* the guy also told him right before that that he didnt know of any problems with the guns

It sounds like the guy had no idea what was going on. Probably a new support tech. "Of course I never heard of the problem, it's only my second day on the job!."

The blue springs are the newer updated ones. I sent in my DTX and it came back with blue springs.

I have a DTZ that had the blue spring and after about 3,000 rds I had my first OOB. Sent it back and I guess they fixed whatever was broken because I haven't had a problem since. Then again i've only put about 500rds through it so far.

So basically it sounds like regardless, even with the fixed blue spring, oob is a potential issue. I don't want to sound negative, but I was hoping this would be a fun and reliable rifle lol Not a "everyday I fire it now, I am going to wonder if today is the day" kind of gun. I love it because it is super cheap to shoot and it allows me to go to a range, whether it be indoor our outdoor, everyday. I'm just curious if there will be another fix, or a recall...? lol

I wouldn't necessarily jump to that conclusion, Joe. His DTX is still considered an earlier model. Just because it had blue springs doesn't mean he was updated to the most current build. What could give us more information is your leading 3 serial numbers (D**).

the springs aren't the only fix, there was a non-rotating something or other also which i think is more related to OOB than springs. springs I think were causing the FTFeed problems.

I apologize lol I guess I meant IF a recall was necessary, not WHEN is.

My first three are DUU
Thanks :)

there is no way of knowing how many guns were defected since they were mass produced. S&W may not think the problems with "a few" guns were ever enough for a recall, they kind of just let the buyer recall the guns themselves, which I dont agree with but hey, it won rifle of the year it cant be too bad.

I can and have in the past dug up information on many other brands of .22LR's that have out of battery issues. Pretty much any .22LR can have an out of battery issue, the firing pin can reach the rim of the cartridge at any stage of going into battery. There have been 10/22 OOB's, Pistol OOB's Conversion kit OOB's... It is what it is...

Yep it's the nature of pretty much all semi auto firearms period. Rimfires especially are prone to it. Heck I have had my Glock fire OOB, SR10/22 many times, and a marlin 60 used to do it once a tube full.

I think the problem is S&Ws reputation is so high that when 1 in 15000 have a problem, its "massive" problems with this model. What about the 14999 others that run fine.

OH mines a DTE model with over 5000 rounds thru her now, and one OOB that was ammo related. 20 year old winchester that I knew I should not shoot but did anyways (didn't have revolver with me at time). It was in a shop in a coffee can with kinda corroded lead so its disposed of now.
DTE's are supposed to be one of the worst ones aren't they?
