Lew Horton 24-3 .44 Special?

S&W MODEL 24-3 "LEW HORTON SPECIAL" MINT CONDITION MODEL 24-3 CAL 44 S&W SPECIAL WITH A 3 INCH BBL AND ROUND BUTT. 99% MINT WITH A FAINT CYLINDER RING. INCLUDED IS THE ORIGINAL BLACK S&W HOLSTER, SHIPPED WITH THE GUN. POSSIBLY UNFIRED.

Anyone know what this gun is worth and anything about it?

Additional info: The serial number is AEL1816.
According to the standard catalog of Smith & Wesson Handguns, page 191
"the model 24-3 with no barrel pin was issued as a Lew Horton Special".
5000 were reported as manufactured with 1000 of them shipped with the
special black holster.

They are really fine shooters, and with proper holster make a fine carry gun. I didn't care for the fit of the stock grips so I modified a set of rosewood RB to SB conversion grips.

I have one. It is my favorite revolver. And I have a few. It would be the last to leave my house. Nothing feels like that little N-frame.

I have the same thing in stainless and it's fantastic!

I've had a 629 like that for the last 20+ years too and truth be told, a 3" N frame is something I don't ever plan to be without.

Ask for a closeup pic of the back of the holster. It doesn't look like the one that shipped with the 24-3, but rather the one shipped with the stainless version. Here's a pic of mine with the correct holster.

Thanks for the replies. My biggest concern is no papers or box. I've never bought a used gun without them. Does it even make a difference? THX

I guess it depends if you are shooting or collecting? I also prefer guns with the correct box and paperwork especially since I collect rather than shoot the revolvers I have acquired, but it wouldn't stop me from buying a nice gun if I really wanted it!

If you can get it for $750-800 its good, even w/out the box. Most of the ones w/ the box sell up in the 900-1100 range give take.

Thanks, not collecting, just occasional carry gun, but the papers/box would be nice. S&W wants $50 for a letter of authenticity from it's archives if I want to ever go that route. In twenty years maybe . Then it should be a real collectible.

I was looking at a Lew Horton holster for a 24-3 that I am buying from a forum member. I went on eBay, and they have one. I didn't know that they made a 624, and that it is marked on the holster. I just looked at the holster, and it has 624 stamped in the leather on the back. I just got outbid, and now I'm glad that I did. I wanted one to match the blue 24-3, and would have been unhappy with the purchase had I found out about the 624 after the fact. I may not shoot it, as it is complete with box, unopened tools, and documents, and appears unfired. This forum is an EXCELLENT source of accurate information, and the archives have info that is as valuable as what will be posted today! Thanks again, ladies & gentlemen for making this a dynamic reference library for all to share.

Mine is similar, but different. N frame with 3" barrel is just a thing of beauty, IMO. If you could get that thing for less than $900, I'd buy it, the 3 inchers just keep on skyrocketing in price. Good luck!

IMO the S&W 624 holster is one of the best OWB concealed carry holsters for a 3" N frame ever made. Much better for this purpose than the 24-3 holster. Also the 24-3 holster was a separate order item, not part of a package, although you could order one at the same time as you ordered the gun.

I bought one...

...at a local gun show, and paid $700, and thought I got a good deal. Mine does have a pinned barrel, and the SN is AEM17XX.

Haven't seen another one like it.

It's one of the best idea ever to come out of S&W/Lew Horton.
