I have an S&W 627 and didn't like the wood grips that came with it. The rubber Hogues were an improvement but still felt like they were lacking. I purchased Pachmayr Decelerators about a month ago and after 2 range visits.. I think they might even be worse than the rubber Hogues.

So after going through these 3 grips.. I've at least narrowed down what I want in a grip. I probably want to still have finger grooves, but if I find something that fits better, I can do without. I would also like some grips that are more substantial. The grips I've tested all seem to leave me feel like I'm compromising my hand to suit the grip. I want something that fills my hand better rather than feeling like I'm trying to grab on to a roll of silver dollars while manipulating the trigger. Any recommendations? Ideally I'd like to keep this under $100

If you are still wanting rubber then I have always preferred the Pachmayr Presentation’s for rubber if I can find them. The Decelerators are made of a softer rubber compound than the Gripper that looks just like it. The Gripper pro is the regular rubber also but leaves the back open for a smaller grip. If you are looking for wood then I would try the Ahrends round to square butt tactical with finger grooves. I don’t know who makes the wooden chunk that comes on some of the 627’s and I apologize for making fun but wow, that thing is a chunk. The Ahrends is like a sleep sport bike compared to that other wood stock. I have an Altamont round to square combat grip for an N frame that has finger grooves. It has something of a coke profile to it, but the finger grooves don’t fit my hand. You may like that one. There are any number of grip makers out there to choose from.

From what I've gathered.. the "chunk" that comes with the 627 PC is actually Ahrends.. haha. Maybe it was their reject model that they gave to S&W at a bulk discount.

I'm open to either rubber or wood as I shoot mostly 38sp and even with 357 mag, things seem fine. I would prefer the back closed.

Is you have the five inch barrel model 627 with the new barrel profile SKU# 170210… If that is an Ahrends stock then it has to be the dropped on its head red headed stepchild of Ahrends… I know it looks nothing like what is on Kim Ahrends website. I’m comparing apples to oranges here but under the justification that they are still fruit…

This is my 28 wearing Ahrends N frame Tactical Smooth Square butt:

I have posted it many times here, but so what, it’s beautiful so it gets a pass…

Add to that I just bought from a forum member an N frame Square butt combat that looks nothing like that hunk of chunk.

AH HA!! After a moment of confusion… Find that SKU I mentioned above… See the chunk stock in the picture? Now click the 360 rotating view. Notice that it is a totally different stock. The one in the 360 view is an Ahrends. Look at the top part of the stock to see the biggest difference.

Those are indeed better than the "chunk" I received with mine!

Go to Gun Grip Supply's website (www.gungripsupply.com) - they have numerous very attractive grips for all S&W frames in round, square and round-to-square butt styles with and without checkering. Most have an S&W logo in them, are right around $70 and fit perfectly.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that they are the wood grip supplier to S&W because I have a set of laminated rosewood S&W grips purchased from S&W's website and several pairs of GGS's laminated grips and the only difference I can find is that GGS's screw goes in from the opposite side as S&W's.

They are just a reseller for Altamont. And their mark up is considerable. Sorry to bust them and deflate their sales but tis true.

Altamont - Pistol Grips

If you don’t see an option on Altamont’s webpage a simple phone call will usually reveal they will make it for you. Also, for K rounds if you call them they will make a K size version of most of their J rounds. They are some very good people with outstanding customer service. I have some of their products:

I ended up removing these from the gun but not due to a fault with the stocks. I just liked something else instead. I do wish I had ordered them checkered for better grip.

Gore, I agree with MaxBob, if you want a rubber type Packy Presentations are a good choice. They fill my hand without being oversized and absorb well. The disadvantage is they look utilitarian. If you have a RB N, I have a set of Ahrends finger grooves that I tried on my 625 JM (it has packys now).

MaxBob keep posting the 28 - it is nice. I got a 6" this weekend, going to try to shoot this week.

I've visited Atamont's site in the past and don't recall seeing any grips with S&W emblems and - again, as I recall - their grips are not that much less, if the emblem is worth anything to you.

I was thinking of maybe getting a pair of T-Grips (if I can find one at a good price) and getting a set of wood ones to go with em. Which wood grips pair up with the T-Grips?

As a side note, the Altamont grips look pretty nice and affordable. How are they? My alternative was getting Hogue woods as my past experiences with Hogues is that they fit very well. I think I'm done with Pachmayr... not very happy how the Decelerators fit the gun.

Magnas and similar are about the only stocks that work with grip adapters like T-Grips. They have to be open in front. Hogue is very top notch. I just don't care for them personally. On a side note, make sure you weren't making the screw on your Decelerators too tight. I have met guys that think Pachmayrs didn't fit only to find the screw was warping the entire grip area so as to not fit right. Too much torque will even make the split in the front creep back open. And if you ask Altamont they will add them. Ahrends won't since he says they aren't factory... (despite S&W going to him for factory stocks...) Whatever, I still love them and now have yet another one coming to me.

Below are my three favorites setups for N-frame carry. I'm an oddball in that I actually prefer the straight Magna profile (or even the earlier service stocks), but find the 29 more controllable with some finger grove assistance.

N frame stocks

Bought a like new 625-2 a couple of years ago. when it got in grimey paws, it was wearing the standard Hogues (not S&W). Switched to Pachy Decel:confused:; They felt like a piece of 1"x4" flooring wrapped in rubber. Next, I switched to the S&W oem Hogue for the X-frame.:DGood palm swell on the X grip. Now this is just my opinion and we know about opinions, noses, and other parts of the anatomy. Go for the factory Hogue; you won't regret it.

Grips

After trying several aftermarket grips, I always go back to the factory finger grooves. I have not found anything I like better so I stopped looking,

If you are looking for some control of recoil I'd recommend you look at some of the wood Hogue grips. Good finger purchase with some of the hot loads and they can be quite attractive in Rosewood, Cocobolo and Pau Ferro. They also have an auction site. Google it, I'm not selling for them. I've purchased several at good prices. Be advised, they are a one piece grip that uses an adapter over the bottom of the butt.

I think I'll sell my Decelerator grips to help fund possibly some Hogue Pau Ferro wood grips.

If you really want grips that fit not only the gun, but your hand as well, order a set from Herrett's. When you order, you need to send a tracing pf your hand, and they will custom make them to fit your hand exactly. Instructions and different grip models to choose from are on their website. The best grips available since they started in the 50sgun or 50s. Sometimes not as flashy as some of the newer manufacturers, but extremely comfortable and effective.

Those things just don't fit me. They look great but the bottom
is too fat and I have large hands. I have ordered some Spegel's.
Pix when they arrive.

This might fill your needs. Before mentioned Gun grips carries them. They definitely will fill your hand and give incredible control.
