Ok, so here's the situation. I took trade on a sw40ve two days ago. I field stripped the weapon, no noticeable defects...but dirty. I cleaned the weapon and replaced all parts in proper locations. However, I took the gun to shoot first time this morning. 50 rounds, no fte, no ftf. Took gun home to clean again, and now weapon will not properly field strip, nor will the firing pin reset. I am severely irritated and confused. I emailed S&W for any help, but no reply as of now. What should I do? I'm near broke and don't want to take to a smith for work, but I'm unsure if the manufacturer will take care of me. Any advice besides accepting that I'm screwed?

Several things - evidently you did not get everything back where it belongs... call the factory and get a pick up tag. Send it back and most likely they will fix it for free. Hopefully it is NOT loaded cause you cant send back loaded. Get the factory to send you literature on your gun that explains disassembly for cleaning.

Need a bit more info you claim it fired all 50 rounds with no problems so it appears it was working 100%. So the problem must have happened after you shot it. Did you take it apart when you got home? Were you even able to field strip it? What is the problem as far as not properly field strip? Can you rack the slide back? There really is no way of putting it together wrong just a barrel spring and a slide unless you fully broke the gun down

pics and more info

Agreed, there is really nothing to it, slightly rack the slide about 1/4-3/8" and hold there, using other hand depress the take down levers and release the slide and if you depress the trigger and remove the slide. Sometimes the take down levers can be a little difficult to get far enough down. I suggest downloading a copy of the owner's manual and make sure your doing it right, if you don't have the manual that is.

Thanks guys...

Slide racks, but stripping is difficult. Explained situation to service guy, and they're gonna fix it. I put gun back together properly (not 100% retarded) and it was fine until today. They're concerned with the firing pin, so I'm confident they'll take care of me. Everything else is kosher. It's as though the slide is hung up, but I'm not gonna stress out. Sending me a shipping label. How's their service, and I wonder how long it'll take to come back? Any who, kinda pissed, had it two days and it's ko'd! Guy I bought from is getting a shiner.

S&W's customer service is excellent. It is summer time -- the plant slows operations a lot during the summer -- but they will take care of you pretty quickly.

A possible solution you can pursue separately -- you could go to a gun shop that carries these and ask the clerk to show you one of these guns (e.g., take it down). That would give you a visual check on what you have been doing.

Good luck with it -- I think you will enjoy it a lot when you get it up and running.

I wonder what it could be seeing as it fired all 50 rounds no problem keep us posted

I'm not really sure. I stripped it before and no problems. Now, the firing pin is not resetting. Slide is freed up, but I'm not gonna mess with it myself. It was a rifle, maybe...but I'm gonna let S&W fix it from there. I was told they are great and guns come back like new. I'm hoping so, it's my FIRST S&W product and I don't want a bad experience. I'm thinking I was taken for a ride by seller, but I'm not sore about it so long as it's fixed. Thanks all for ideas, suggestions, and feedback.

Sounds to me he did not have BOTH take down levers all the way down and tried to push slide past and one side is stuck in the slide don't ask how I know..............

Firing pin would have nothing to do with this problem.

SW will take care of you

Be safe

Also i dont think you should be mad at the seller being as how you field stripped it initially, cleaned it up, and put 50 flawless rounds thru it. just sounds like maybe a glitch in the program... It happens.

Actually, I should be. He admitted it has done it before...to much badgering via text. He did his own "smithing" to trigger assembly of some design and failed to mention it to me. Needless to say, it's our last business with one another. But, as I stated, S&W said they'd fix, so I'm not too pissed. But when someone fails to give info like that, not good sales practice.

so the gun shot perfect for 50 rounds you took it apart and now it wont function and your mad at him??

Ballpoint pen spring used by home gunsmiff?
Guide rod on wrong notch?

Does this mean you won't be taking your Sigma Deer Huntin'? Or did you find some Silver Haired Gunsmith to fix what you broke?

Sadly, I didn't get the oppurtunity to break it myself. If you had read entire thread, you'd have known that. Unfortunately, some people haven't got the patience. As stated, seller fessed up and now it's going to be worked on. Thank you for the sarcasm though, it's refreshing to hear people so quick on the draw with their lameness.

As far as pen spring, possible, but I'm to the point where I'm letting it get worked on by someone else. Slide is a mystery, it's stripping fine now, but I don't wanna get into the internals. Supposedly, seller removed springs then replaced when sold to me. I have no paperwork to tell if something was incorrect. But, as others have said, it shot fine, then all hell broke loose at home. I didn't get to take it apart to clean or inspect after firing. Others have blamed me, I blame seller. I havent modified it in any way, so I'm not going to mess with it. S&W said they'd fix it, no charge, so I'm going to take them up on that and write it off as bad luck.
