Changing Barrels In 629-6 ?

I got a new stock late 2010 made 4" 629-6 some months back. No East Coast distributor had one so it was a special order from the factory, and I was worried from hearing about poor quality new Smiths. I was amazed by the fine quality of the fit and finish and lock-up, it rivals the old pinned guns I use to own IMHO. The action must have got some hand work in the assembly, since the single & double action is both light and smooth. It is scary accurate.

Thing is, I prefer a short barreled gun for carry, and am thinking of swapping out the barrel for a 3" one.

Anyone have experience with S&W doing this as far as costs and time ? Their 2009 parts list has a 3" R/R ( red ramp ?) at $119. I assume it is really 2 1/2" from the frame ?

Thanks

No, it is really 3" +/- long from end to end. In an N-Frame this is close to 2" from the frame face to the muzzle.

If you will call S&W Customer Service at 800-331-0852 they will be able to determine if the 3"barrel is currently available, and give you an exact price to complete the work, instead of the guess you will get here.

The 3" barrel on my 28 measures at 2 7/8". I've been told by some folks here that is pretty much right for a 3" barrel on an N frame and seems in keeping with what Mr. Alk 8944 is saying. Personally I think it looks great on an N frame.

S&W charged me $60 to do a barrel swap on my 586 back in Jan 2011 with a barrel I supplied. I had them do this while they were doing the L frame recall work so shipping for me was free both ways. You will have to pay the freight both ways.
