I'm looking specifically for info on the 686+ -- was the CS-1 made as a 7-shot?

Yes, thanks -- tracked down a bunch more info once you pointed out the dash number, looks like 2500 were made.

Don't have one, just thought it'd be a nice piece and was wondering how hard and how expensive it'd be to snag one.
I have not seen very many -4 +'s of any barrel length out there. They were not made for very long before S&W went to the -5, also pre lock but with frame mounted firing pin and MIM hammer/trigger. A 3" will likely be rarer and cost more than a 2 1/2 or 4". Good luck on your search and I would suggest if you run across any 3" 686 at a reasonable price you snag it, not many come up for sale.

People who have them hang onto them. Why? Well its evident there won't be anymore as nice as those.
The 3" 686-4+ is the one to search for, IMO. All the best engineering changes without any of the cost cutting or idiotic ones.
The 3" 686-5+, when found, is always a little less expensive. Probably because it incorporates the frame mounted firing pin and the start of the cheapening of the build.
