Hey, guys. I belt carry either a K-frame or an N-frame when I CC, but I almost always also have a J-frame in my pocket...of the Centennial variety. I carried a 442 for a while before it broke, then I switched to a Pre-40 and also have a couple 640's en route. I just don't trust the aluminum guns as much as the all-steel ones.

My question to you all is; does anyone else here pocket carry a steel J-frame? Are they generally considered "too heavy" for that role? I've found that the extra 4-5oz. that the Pre-40 added were not terribly noticeable...and we all know the heavier guns are easier to shoot well.

I liked the weight of the 442, but I feel I have more confidence in the all-steel Centennials. What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
-Rob

I like my S&W model 649 in a uncle mike's #3 pocket holster. dont even notice its there and it comes out fast and clean right or left side.

I carried my 36 for a while, then switched to a 642. I appreciate the lower weight, and the 642 has been 100% reliable at the range. I'm confident in it.

I almost always carry my Model 60, whether I'm carrying something else or not. It usually rides in my pocket, inside a Galco leather pocket holster. Never a problem in my jeans, but it doesn't work well in cargo shorts with deep pockets due to it swinging when I walk. An airweight would do the same, though.

I carry a 36 (no dash) in my left cargo shorts pocket in a Kramer pocket holster and a Airweight in the other pocket with another Kramer pocket holster... Yes they tend to swing if I walk too fast so I just slow down and enjoy the day... Later, Dave

Over the years I have pocket carried a 36, 640 and 649 without a problem.

I pocket carry a 49 in the summer, it's not too heavy as long as I wear a belt to keep my pants from sliding down...

Pocket carry steel J frame

Bobbed hammer Model 60 almost every day in a Uncle Mike's holster.

I too also carry my model 36 in my right jeans pocket. Some of the blue finish has started to wear but still does what its supposed to. Frank

I've got a 642 now, but I used to carry a 640-1 .357 Magnum this way all the time. Never had a problem with it in the proper pants, but it's out of the question for me with baggy shorts.

I've been carrying a stainless 640 no-dash with J Target smoothies in the roomy right-side pocket of my doublefront Carhartts. No hangup, no grab, no issues.

I've been carrying a 640-1 in a RKBA pocket holster in my front pocket for over two years. Before that I carried a 442 also in a RKBA pocket holster, carried in the same place that the 640-1 is now. When I first got the 640-1 it did seem "heavy" to me, but not anymore. Now it's just a part of my everyday apparel. The majority of the time I either wear Cabelas trail hiker cargo pants or cargo shorts. They have deep pockets that hide the 640-1 easily.

642CT or 442 every day. I retired the M36 back pocket carry years ago when it started to give me back problems. Occasionally I carry a M60-14 (De-locked). Carry as much lead as you want to carry all day long. Most of the time it's the 642CT BUG to either the 1066, 1076, 6904, 39-2 or some other 1st, 2nd or 3rd GEN S&W.

In the latter 1980s, I modified this older Model 36 for carry in the front pocket of average Levi-type Pants.

Carried it every day for 21 years that way.

Had a nice supple older Shoulder Holster for it, but, never carried it in that mode but for once or twice just to see what it would be like.

Pocket Carry

I sometimes pocket carry this nice 640 no-dash, no-lock, no-MIM. I'll bet the guy that sold it to me is still trying to replace it.;).

Sir, I "sort of" pocket carry a Model 49. It's got a Barami Hip-Grip on it, so normally rides at the top of the pocket with the grip sticking out. It carries fine, but requires a fairly long cover garment to conceal.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Carried an old 36 for years. Went to a 640-1 recently but didn't like the front sites. Replaced the grips with CT 305, they are still a little small for my large hands but doable. No problem cc IWB. I carry .38 +P ammo and can shoot 2" groups at 7 yards. I find the extra weight a benefit while the 642 was just to light for my tastes (but if not for the 640 I'd have no problem carrying a 642. I wish they had made it all out of ss, same size but just a little more weight).
