Unique

I've gone to Power Pistol also, especially in the 44 Special. It's clean and meters great in my old RCBS measure. I can't tell that it's "louder" than other powders I use, I think H110 is louder than PP. I will say that with 255 grain Hardcasts, I still use 2400 as PP gives less velocity -- but with 240s or 200s PP is my choice.

I use Universal Clays, it burns cleaner than Unique and i usually get better accuracy from it.

I have searched a lot for a Unique replacement, my issue is not cleanliness
but I do not like how Unique meters.
I have found Accurate #5 and Power Pistol to be great options.
I have used Power Pistol a lot in hot 45acp and 9mm loads so I tried various
recipes in revolvers , works great !
Check it out I really like it in 357 magnum, it has a lot of flash so you think the load is hotter then it really is if that makes sense.
I tend to use #5 when I want a really soft load, I have shot it at 8 grains with a 125 HP up to 11 grains ,my manual shows 11.5 as max.
I use the 11.0 grains in my Marlin carbine and it really shoots well.
I have also used both in 44 Special a lot.

Universal Clays by Hodgdon. I am almost 100% sure its a ball bowder so metering shouldn't be a problem at all. It's unique but better and I have not personally found fault with Unique in any of my loading. I don't notice it being any dirtier than anything else with that burn rate.

I started loading a long time ago.
The powders that were recommended to me were Bullseye, Unique, and 2400.
I have used H 110 with good results as well.

I tried to replace Unique with SR 4756. It just never shot as accurate for me.

Since the mid 1970's there have been a bunch of good new powders.

However I have has such good results with Bullseye, Unique and 2400, & H 110 for the 44 Mag with bullets above 280 gr and the 475 LB, I just do not see the need to change.

Thanks guys,,,,,I gather the best alternatives would be Universal or Universal Clays.

One thing about Universal Clays is that the pressure curve gets pretty steep pretty fast at the upper end of the load range. A bit trickier than Unique at those levels in my experience.

For .44 magnum, I use 11 gr. of Unique under a 240 gr. XTP if I want something a bit more "genteel" than my usual 24 gr. H110/W296 load under the same bullet.

Funny, I use 11gr of Universal under a 210 Sierra JHP in the
44Magnum. Very clean. Very accurate. A lot less fuss than the
26gr of W296 in a full house load.

Sure seem to be a lot of threads about Unique powder recently :)
This is the 3rd one I have posted in tonight.

I am also in the Universal Clays camp as far as a replacement
for Unique.
