M&P thumb safety or not?

A redundant device that must be depressed all the time -- or it will be On when you need it Off. Just say No.

If stuck with a pistol like this, the device comes out in about 17 seconds according to one video I saw. You can bet little filler blocks for the holes in the frame.

As an old 1911 fan, I prefer the thumb safety. It take training but the thumb safety is just as fast and more safe than a gun without. If you don't want to put in the extra training time and repetitions then buy an M&P without it. It sounds like you don't really want the thumb safety so save your money and get one without.

Who is for it or against it? I prefer not to have it.

This question is like asking someone if they like Ford Mustangs or Chevy Camaros. Its up to personal needs whether or not a thumb safety is a wise idea or not.

For someone who's been shooting Glocks for a decade, its probably a bad idea. For someone who's been carrying a 1911 for that same period of time, its a great idea.

As long as you own a functional firearm with the skill to put the rounds where you need them who cares whether you like the safety, dont like the safety, prefer a silver slide to a blued slide, small backstrap, large backstrap, etc.;)

prefer no safety - but i also have a household of shooters and i used to carry the m&p.

also - ford mustang over the camaro :)

I am a 1911 fan and just purchased a M&P 40C (my 10 day Calif wait is up tomorrow) with the thumb safety. I don't feel it offers a lot by itself, but it also is almost automatic for me to knock it off on drawing. The main reason I like the feature is that the gun will fire with the magazine removed, another feature I like.

I ordered my M&P 40c with the ambi safety and I'm fine with it. I always know I can take it off in minutes if I don't want it on it on anymore or want to sell it to someone who doesn't like it. It's almost like a 'value added option' I didn't pay extra for.

And if the little holes left when you remove the safeties bother someone, they can buy the little thingamagigs from S&W to fill in the holes and not lose any sleep....

If you're a M1911 shooter and trained and practice to keep your thumb on top of the lever at all times the M&P safety is OK. But few guys who just pick up a M1911 or M&P have a clue about this and even less bother taking training. Most would just rather pretend.

I bought my 9c from Bud's a couple years back with the external safety only because they were on sale for $439. After taking an advanced class and failing to disengage the safety under pressure every time, I took it to a gunsmith and had him remove the safety and install frame plugs. I ordered my 45c without the safety. I know you can choose to leave it disengaged, but I personally like it better without. One less thing to do before you pull the trigger, which could mean the difference between going home to my family or not.

As someone said, it is redundant and unnecessary.

This is why I choose not to have it.If you are up against a bad guy you only have 1 chance to get him before he gets you!

I'll take the M&P w/ a safety and despite growing up in a household where General Motors paid the bills for 32 years and still supports my parents, the Mustang, fixed rear axle and all, is a better car than the Camaro. I'd love one of those Boss 302's....

That said, I still will take my Lexus as an everyday driver!

Add one vote to having a thumb safety. All my M&Ps have it. It's not so much that I know how to operate it instinctively. It's the odd chance someone else gets a hold of my M&P will not and allow me that second or two to react accordingly.

Had one with a safety sold it now have 3 with out
The County Mounties switched from Glocks to S&W because of the safety - they hate them ,after 12 years with glocks - the safety is not a muscle memoty thing yet plus they have two holster locks - talk about the lawyers putting the LEO's in Harms Way.

Went to a big box store today with my wife. She loves my M&P pro so I wanted her to try out a compact to see how it feels. The one they had, had a manual safety. I don't want one on an M&P, and my wife has no wish for one either. So I express this to the counter guy, and he tells me thats the only way they come and its easy to get used to.

Yeah, ok. (roll eyes) Its the first one WITH a manual safety that I've seen in person, but that's the only way they come. So I thank him for his time and we walk away, my wife was a little miffed as she really liked it. I then explained he is full of bologna and I know of another place cheaper that we can get it and without the safety.
She was ok then. ;)
