M&P thumb safety or not?

Thumb Safety

I "had" a M&P 40 w/thumb safety and used it for qual's for my agency but mid-way through the quals I removed the safety. As many will tell you using the thumb safety takes training above and beyond drawing and shooting. For me I kept hitting the thumb safety as I drew my weapon (without realizing it) and lost precious points when I could not complete the assignment. So during our 2 weeks training time I removed the thumb safety and completed the firearm training...and qualified. For a home protection firearm with the thumb safety you're probably okay. For a first responder it's probably not the best idea. At least for me. That's my two cents.
PS: I have since sold the M&P with the thumb safety and purchased one without.

Yes to the thumb safety. BTW it has NOTHING to do with the trigger pull.

I was wondering about that post regarding the trigger pull... Never heard that before.

I like the thumb safety. When I shoot a pistol without it, my thumb "looks" for it before I squeeze. Might as well give it something to find, eh?

Bye-bye M&P safeties

While at my LGS several weeks ago several factory reps were in attendance, including LMT, Browning, and S&W. I asked the S&W rep what changes would be in store for the M&P line in 2012. As far as new models, he couldn't tell me (SHOT announcements). However, he did say the manual safety models were being dropped for all calibres in 2012. While I like the idea of a manual safety, not that big of a deal to me and I'll probably get one without, since I also want a 5" Pro down the line.

I am an old Tanker and trained with a 1911 so a thumb safety was normal to but my M&P 45c does not have one and I see no reason for it on a striker fired pistol.

Interesting info on the 2012 lineup. Thanx for posting. I'm gonna be getting the MP22 but I dislike the thumb safeties. I had already been researching how to remove it. Maybe I'll hold off now...maybe I won't.

Got my plugs in free of charge from S&W (they paid shipping too!!!) Here's how they look installed.

Removing that thumb safety and installing plugs is an absolute breeze. A few tricky moments getting the plugs and sear to set together all nicely, but all in all it was a 10 minute job at most.

Ok cool. What info did you have to give S&W to get the plugs? I'd like to have them, or at least on the way, when I get the pistol.

I called and said 'hi, how ya doin'? I'm the proud owner of a S&W MP.45 and recently removed the thumb safety. I was told by some buddies on a forum that I could source some plugs to fill those holes by calling you directly' .... the gentleman says 'Sounds good, bud ... What's your address?' ..

They showed up 3 days later.

I have a the thumb safety on all 5 of my M&Ps. = no accidental discharge when holstering, also when taking off in public bathrooms etc.. My sigs do not have safeties but they are all p250s with revolver type double action. if you cannot teach yourself to flick off the saftey maybe you dont have the motor skills required to carry,,,
Just kidding about the skills part but i had a rise out of you didnt I....

Thumb safety? I use mine to force a higher grip against the bob-tail by leaving my thumb on the safety while shooting. It works so well that I put my five inch slide and barrel on my full size handle assembly to retain the safety and not change my grip. For whatever reason the five inch is not available with a thumb safety.

Isn't the 5" more for competition shooting? Their intended customers for competition wouldn't want the safety so they manufacture without. That's my thinking anyway.

1911 shooters have been fond of this grip for years. The safety lever is actually used to help control muzzle flip by giving extra purchase on the gun. S&W did the safety right. It is in the perfect location and has the right "throw" to please scores of shooters that grew up with the 1911 but want to get in on the tactical tupperware movement. The fact that the M&P is offered with a manual safety option is great.

...Except the M&P safety goes "up"...

My PPK/S goes up. Well, ok more like forward and up I suppose.

First pistol was an FEG MkII. Cheap Hungarian copy of a PPK. Had a cheap safety/decocker as well. Often fired when decocked. The SW/Walther PPK/S I have did have a recall about that very issue. Therefore, since it's always on safe, I have always, always praticed flicking the safety off prior to firing. Just took our local NRA CPL class. The instructor was expecting some issue I believe with the fire two, safe gun, assess, repeat drill. No problems and did alright.

Will be purchasing an MP45 w/ Thumb safety at some point. Will let you know how that goes.

As a die-hard 1911 fan of some 30 years carrying as an LEO, and competing with one, when I order mine it will have the safety. If I were still and LEO, it would most certainly have it.
That having been said, if you do not have the manipulation of a 1911 safety hard-wired into you, then probably not.

Just wish my Shield had at least a strong-side version of the bigger gun's lever - the one on the Shield is too small to use well, so I just ignore it and treat the gun like a Glock.
