You have any occupiers nearby? It just may be worth it to take the trap and skunk by there and leave it for them to figure out. You'll be out a trap but it sure would be funny. I can see a YouTube coming.
Invite an occupier to set up a tent by it...that should keep the skunk away.

I would guess that those that recommend shooting the critter have never done so them selves. If you don't get a perfect shot to the head, it will spray. Even though you will be at a distance, the smell will still be there when you go to clean up the mess. Covering the trap is your best bet. Your choice for bate in the trap can also decide what you catch.
But, it's been my unhappy recent experience, posted previously, that a shot skunk will likely "release" on expiration, so choose the kill site with that in mind.

I had caught more than a few in a leg-hold trap a long time ago. They will spray if hit in the head, heart/lung or almost anywhere else with a 22 or 12 gauge. They will not spray if you break their spine and a 38 swc will do just fine. Bullet into their chest through the top and they are dead in seconds.
