You have any occupiers nearby? It just may be worth it to take the trap and skunk by there and leave it for them to figure out. You'll be out a trap but it sure would be funny. I can see a YouTube coming.

Whatever you do, be careful. Not only because of the stink, but skunks are notorious for carrying rabies.
Throw a blanket over the cage. remove to where you want it, release. done it more than once . Havnt been sprayed Jim
My advice may be a bit on the illegal side.
I would get me some .22 shorts. Get a .22 rifle and pop the critter from a distance and then dump it into a trash bag.
Your neighbors likely would not hear a thing.

I've never caught one in a live trap...But I have Injun'd up on 'em
and whacked 'em in the back of the head (cerebellum) with a good stout stick.
Kills instantly with no fuss, no muss.

Sounds like a good idea at first, but are you sure anyone would notice?
Adding a skunk might actually improve their living conditions.

I would guess that those that recommend shooting the critter have never done so them selves. If you don't get a perfect shot to the head, it will spray. Even though you will be at a distance, the smell will still be there when you go to clean up the mess. Covering the trap is your best bet. Your choice for bate in the trap can also decide what you catch.
About 20 years ago I worked in a factory where a skunk decided investigate. It was run over by a forklift.
Production was very low that day.

My wife is still mad that the family of 4 skunks took a liking to my back yard, and all of my guns were locked in the safe, and I was in Afghanistan. They were going into the yard to eat her garden vegatables. Once they got bigger they could not fit through the fence. Maybe a quality Air rifle with a good scope would be a nice christmas present!!!

From experience. Never trap ANY animal without first affixing at least 10 feet of rope to the cage--BEFORE--you set up the trap.

Several years ago my former neighbor Dr. E caught one in his live trap. This was before crystal meth muddled up his thoughts and eventually got him sent to prison where he will be for at least three more years. He was hunting, fishing, and farming then and pretty much enjoying a leisurely lifestyle. He tried covering the trap with a bath towel but apparently the towel wasn't big enough or something and the skunk pretty much soaked the towel down. Dr. E managed to get the skunk out of the trap without getting himself soaked and being the type of person who didn't like to waste anything he took the towel into the house and threw it over the face of his sleeping brother Andy and then ran like hell. I heard the commotion as I saw Dr. E running toward the woods laughing. A few minutes later I saw Andy in the yard naked running a garden hose over his head. Andy threw the towel in the cab of Dr. E's pickup. This is probably not the way to handle a skunk.
I had caught more than a few in a leg-hold trap a long time ago. They will spray if hit in the head, heart/lung or almost anywhere else with a 22 or 12 gauge. They will not spray if you break their spine and a 38 swc will do just fine. Bullet into their chest through the top and they are dead in seconds.

I have shot several in head with a 22. I was told to hit them in the head and all is well. Maybe I was just lucky, but I remember taking good aim and hitting them where I was looking and never come out on the bad end of the deal. Thirty some years ago we had a chicken farm near by and a nice old lady on the other side of us with several cats that she fed out side, so shooting skunks was something that happened quite often.

recommends placing the trap on a table or some other
raised platform to avoid skunks.
Place on the ground to catch skunks.
I grabbed a junky end table alongside a road w/ a "free' sign for this, bolted the live trap to it (use fender washers), baited w/ peanut butter w/ dry cat food sprinkled on, & have had good success.
Also caught 2 squirrels & a red fox !
