Always wanted a Bodyguard so I got a 649-1 shooter (1988/89) which is I find is a little too heavy for me as a concealed carry. Have a chance to trade it for a decent blued 38-2 (1994) and I only use standard pressure .38sp anyway. Was the 38-2 made better than the current 442/642 no-locks? What say you, fair trade?

The 36 is as good as the 442/642 I'm sure. If your still looking for conceal carry though the 649 is the better choice over a 36 IMHO. If your just talking range duty then your simply trading one J frame for another J frame.

I carried this 649 for years and two years ago purchased an LCR. The LCR is much lighter and gel insert grips on the LCR really make it a more comfortable shooter. But in twenty years the 649 will still be a great weapon while the LCR will just be old plastic. :)

I prefer the 38-2 as my EDC. It is extremely light weight, much more so than any all steel j-frame. I have first year Centennials (a 640 and a 642 Airweight), but the 38-2 gets the nod over them (even though stainless steel has its benefits).

Logictox,

Great revolver, how do you keep them so scratch free? My carry guns get scratched and beat to heck in months let alone years. I need to find out your secret, your 649 looks box new to me!

I carry 100% of the time but most of the time the weapon is in an ankle holster inside my boot. They simply don't take much impact from anything in that location. My LCR after two years with the black finish still looks brand new after you wipe the sock lent off of it. :)

Photo taken two minutes ago of my LCR after two years. Other then sock dust, not a mark on it.

I'll have to try some polish on my stainless and nickel guns...sure keeps em lookin pretty, thanks for the tip.

I polish all of my stainless S&W's. Some people don't like it because it's not original and I guess I can see their point but it sure looks nice and makes them easier to clean.
