Had a phone interview today. Great opportunity. Very excited.

I must have done well as they're bringing me on site for a face-to-face this coming Wed.

I have lived my whole 43 years in Alabama but have visited SC many times as my wife is originally from North Charleston and the rest of her family still live there.

I suspect it's not much different from AL but what's it like being a gun enthusiast in SC? Particularly upstate? I notice Skip J range which hosted the state IDPA championship is up there.

SC as a new home

I have talked to several of my students who are from "inland" SC and they all share a similar view. SC is not an affluent state but they live within their means, like AL. There is not a lot of social services support but if you are employed this is a non issue.
For some reason, I absolutely enjoy listening to the accent from that area. It just speaks of "Southern gentility" YMMV
Given the facts that this is an upward move for you, I would take it in a heartbeat.

SC is a good state for hunting, fishing, and a good life. SCACA (SC Arms Collectors Assoc. [SCACA.NET]) puts on 4 shows in Columbia and 5 in Greenville (one this WE -675 tables and little junk). Mountains and beaches are not a long drive. Lots of deer, turkey, and small game. Atlanta and Charlotte not that far.

At work I used to call SC a lot for verifications and I would "fall in love" with some of the women I spoke with, having no idea what they actually looked like.;)

SC is a great state, gun friendly, people friendly and with a lot of diversity. Seems like with all the talk of unemployment for the past couple years I have not known anyone that wanted to work that wasn't working.

As someone else mentioned the mountains and the beachs aren't far. Cost of living is great compared to some places. I live in the upstate and there's plenty of stuff to do if you are an outdoorsman. There is a public range in Oconee and Pickens counties and a couple of indoors ranges in Greenville Co. If you fish you'll love it. Lakes Jocassee, Keowee and Hartwell are very close and it's just a skip to Russell. God's country for sure. Oconee is the best with regards to crime.

I live in the lowcountry. It doesn't snow. There's alligators. The roaches... you can kill them with golf clubs... and pretty much have to. Most everything bites or stings. Upstate won't be as hot.

I lived in SC (Spartanburg) for seven years. My wife is from there.
I love SC!!!

Don't know how things are in SC, but want to wish you the best of luck on your interview.

If you need work I would suggest that you take hold of the opportunity, the folks in S.C. are very friendly and accept people for what they are. They are not shy when building bridges either, their highways are to be envied by most other states.

Thanks for all the replies. I got the job. Gave notice at current gig today. Things moving very fast now. Have to be at the new gig on 1/16 so I'm probably going to have to rent something while the wife and kids stay here until the house sells or the school year ends (my eldest is in kindergarten).

Trying to cast up a bunch and am eying portable loading stands to use while I'm in the rental.

I hope to be able to still carve out the time to compete in IDPA during this process.

He's not kidding, Ladder13. I see those giant things when we go visit the in-laws.

Have fished the Cooper River in gator mating season too. That can get interesting.

From a native, let me tell you that those "bugs" that you refer to are NOT roaches, but "Palmetto Bugs"!

They are endemic and are huge, but harmless. Don't waste you money on exterminators because it will do you NO good. Learn to live with them in a symbiotic relationship and all will be well!

Congratulations on becoming a Sandlapper! I wish that I could go back!

One crawled into my ear while I slept. I reached up half asleep and killed another between thumb and forefinger as it tried to crawl into my mouth. That meant war.

Anyway... The Palmetto bug is simply the Florida Woods cockroach. It's still a type of roach. What most people call palmetto bugs here on Parris Island aren't those. They are actually smoky brown roaches. I googled it and then asked an entomologist for a second opinion.

Anyway, a visit to the Goodwill store yielded a couple of good golf clubs, which seemed necessary after even USN and USMC issue combat boots proved unable to deliver one stomp kills...

Palmetto Bugs........I love it. They are just huge roaches and are everywhere. The mosquito is considered the state bird and are only slightly easier to slap-kill than the gnats. That said, I would never leave the Low Country to go back to MA/New England. SC is relatively gun friendly and it is a great place for the outdoorsman. Like everywhere else in the country we have our share of hee-haws, red-necks, blue-bloods, buffoons and self-serving politicians. Also, while driving here, operational lights, tires with tread, use of directionals and functioning mechanical items is optional.....(Sarcasm is thick and intended) All that aside, it is a great place to live and there is (almost) no snow in winter. July & August.......that is another matter.

Congrats on the new job. I was stationed in Charleston for a few years back in the early 90's. I loved it down there. If there was one place that I would want to move to it would be back down there.
