I've been planning on buying an M&P 40 for a while now. So today when my son in law called to say he'd just gotten a new M&P40 Pro I shot straight over to take a look. All I have to say is, very freakin nice. Fit my hand like it was made for me and the balance was fantastic. Not too heavy or too light either. The trigger really simpressed me. I was expecting a trigger pull similar to shooting a double action revolver so it surprised me that after taking up the slack it just went "click". I had not expected it to be so nice at all. Now my question. How much of a difference is there between the Pro and the standard full size model. I know that the Pro has a 3/4" longer barrel and the trigger pull itself is about 1 to 1.5 pounds lighter. I am not a competitive shooter or anything and there's about $100 to $150 difference between the two. I suppose the trigger is something that could be changed if I wanted. How much affect does the longer barrel really have.

I have not shot the Pro model yet, but I've lately been wading into M&P's in a big way: 3 compacts and 2 full size. They all have great ergo's (they feel good), the triggers are all good for a striker fired pistol and they have all shot accurately. Summary based on my experience: you won't regret a standard M&P.

I was in your boat and was really torn between the two decided to go with the standard, and then upgrade the sights to the truglo tfo

You can get the Pro with the 4.25" barrel as well. I have both a 9FS and now a 5" 9 Pro. If all you want is a plinker/SD gun, no real reason to go with the Pro. Save yourself the money and buy a standard FS, an Apex DCAEK, and RAM with the difference. With the aftermarket parts, you'll get a better trigger than what the Pro has. Sights are a personal preference so you may end up swapping out the OEM sights anyway.

OP is talking about the 40 not the 9. Pro 40 is only the 5"

if you like the sights and the trigger on the pro then it makes sense to get one.

if you're going to change the sights out and install an Apex kit, then i'd just go with a standard M&P. this may sound overly simplistic, but i'm a simple guy (or simple-minded maybe).

the trigger on my 9pro is very good, and i didn't feel the need to install the whole Apex kit (just the USB to eliminate the scratchy take-up). i like the sights on the pro, and i use this pistol in friendly IDPA-style competitions at my range on monday nights........with good results i might add:)

either way you're going to end up with a very nice pistol!

Per the S&W website the .40 pro is offered in both sizes 5" and 4.25"

5" part# 178032
4.25" part # 178036

Now not sure if they are no longer making the 4.25 I cannot varify but both firearms are listed on their website

Bud's has the 4.25" 40 Pro for sale as well:

S&W M&P40 PRO 40 4 NS 4.5TRG $564.00 SHIPS FREE

They do enough volume that they generally don't have out of production guns for sale.

It's available with a 4.25" barrel. Here is a photo of mine. I inserted a dowel down the barrel of the empty pistol until it stopped, and marked the dowel. The parallax in the shot makes it seem slightly off, but it's exactly 4.25 inches. Hope this helps. BTW, this is quickly becoming my favorite pistol.

M&P 40 Pro 4.25

My brother bought this, and man I can't miss with it! On the other hand he can't hit any thing with it! I love it and have tried to buy it off of him, pretty soon I will just get one myself!
