Well, like the title says...my brand new PC 627 2-5/8" is travelling overnight to my FFL for tomorrow. I am ear to ear smiles and cannot wait to get my mitts on this beauty. The last few days I've been drooling over all the 627, "blood work", UDR threads and their pics in anticipation. The transaction was smooth as butter, sent my trade pistol off overnight with UPS, dealer received and sent my new revolver off the same day Express for a two day total turnaround.

I'm really looking forward to putting it through the paces this weekend. I will be sure to post up pics and a range report as soon as I can. Tonight is going to be a restless, albeit excited sleep. The revolver bug has taken hold of this 1911 and semiauto guy (I will still carry my 1911s as my EDC) but have a new found revolver love. I'm already pondering what my next revolver should be...S&W's lineup makes things very difficult.

Congratulations! You'll like the gun a lot. I have the 629PC 2 5/8", the 44 Mag version of the same gun, and it's definitely one of my favorites.

MTKTM, awesome. Can I ask how that 44 handles. I have my eye set on a 44mag before too long and obviously that 629 is a beauty as well. I've been on the fence if I move forward with it, between the snubbie PC or going up to a 4" barrel in something else. How would you rate the recoil compared to others of the same caliber or for that matter, shooting something like 45 ACP? While I'm liking revolvers of all shapes and sizes, something about the shorter barrel ones really speaks to me. Would love to have a 4" blued 29.

Outstanding! I'm sure you're going to love it!

It's my favorite revolver of all-time!

It's Here!! WOW!

Ok, So I literally just picked up my 627PC at 10:45 tonight from my FFL. Wow what a revolver. Just exactly what I wanted and then some. Everything you guys write and talk about with regards to the fit and finish and triggers of the performance center guns couldn't be more true. What a trigger!!!! Just sweet. I am accustomed to highly tuned 1911 triggers and this thing ranks right in there with a high price trigger job. I'm impressed. SA is a dream. love it.

The grips are gorgeous, but I have to agree with most of the post concerning them, just a tad too small and would love to get that pinky on there. I can see how they are a great conceal grip and serve the snubbies purpose though. They fit wonderfully to the gun, and the wood is actually quite nice...no complaints for their quality at all. I could see keeping these grips on it, but I need to hit the range with them to get the full low down. If I could pick a pair right now, I think I'd really like to get the Nill grips with the 3 finger grooves and checkering, but at $170 bucks, I can wait a bit. LOL For shooting a lot at the range, I can easily see the Hogues pictured above for comfort. I'm going to give carrying this revolver a chance, so rubber is not my first choice for carrying. I'm used to carrying a fairly heavy 1911 so the heft is moot, but rubber always finds a way to snag the cover garment. lots of options though for the N frame which is great.

I really like the bead blast-like matte finish. Its totally my flavor of SS. I have a full custom 1911 with a glass bead blast finish and this almost an exact match. Kudos to S&W on this treatment. Its beautiful.

I really like the non-fluted cylinder, it's just different and looks nice on this snubbie. This gun is absolutely NIB and the factory shell casing said it was fired in December of 2011. Not a blemish anywhere. I'm kind of anal about that on a new gun as we all tend to be, and if anyone is going to blem it up, it should be me. ha! That's the difficult part buying out of state...I'm not huge on buying without handling first but I rolled the dice and I couldn't be happier.

Being newer to the revolver world (and I must say I'm hooked) I really like the moon clip option. I like the speed of reload and I like the simple fact that they remove the rattle factor when the rounds are in the gun. Also cool that you don't need em if you dont want, but its just gravy ontop. My other revolver doesn't accept them. 8 rounds of 357 mag...um yes, perfect. Having as many rounds as my 1911 in a revolver is pure fun! I see how they claimed "UDR" on this one...it really is.

I like the sights, and was really drawn to the slab side cuts into the barrel. Maybe its my love for old slab sides coming through, but on this snub, they look perfect and set it off. the S&W PC roll mark on the left is nicely done, and I even like the laser etched 357 Mag 8X. on the right side I am missing just the last little bit of the bottom portion of the "e" in the word "Performance" but I can easily live with that. Like the laser shutoff at the last moment. No biggie.

Well, I'm done gushing for now. I am planning on getting it to the range this weekend and will post another report after. Snow is hitting pretty hard tonight, so we see what tomorrow holds, but to sum up, I LOVE this revolver. It's a keeper in everyway, and if it shoots half as good as it looks and feels and is fit, then it will rank among my favorite 1911s in my stable. I never thought a revolver would do that for me but like I said, I've been bitten. I know it won't be my last.

Hogue Monogrip???

You're right!

I have lots of handsome wood grips for it, but, for everyday use, I use the Hogue which saves them from the wear and tear of daily carry.

Glad to read that the first impressions of your new revolver are positive. Best of luck with it! ;)

Congratulations on making the trade and having it go so painlessly.

What are you going to do when you find that this is far more reliable and a better carry gun than any 1911 you have?

My first PC 627 UDR, the first of the re-releases I could find 4/2010, started my problems. I had wanted one since a 1999 advert on the original model. Often times, our mind's eye cannot be equalled by reality. This was not the case here. Even with the poorly fitted Eagle boot grips on my new one, it was a beauty - a keeper - more than I had envisioned. I tried to wear it out - my wimpy .357M's and regular .38 Specials are it's diet - the warmest thing I've launched from it being +P 158gr LHPSWC. I liked it so much, I wanted something similar as a 'house' protector.

I sold an old friend and, in October, 2010, I went back to my LGS - to buy a 327NG - until I noted it's lacking the use of moonclips. There - in the case - was another new PC627 UDR. I got it, otd, for <$4 over the 327NG's price - a no brainer. I also ordered two of the S&W Accessories 'N-frame PC Shop' grips - and a custom Lobo Leather holster:

This is meant as a warning. That revolver is just fun - a real range-bag glutton. It's easy to load, moonclipped or 5starfirearms.com speedloaders, great trigger, easy to acquire sights, - a total package. Warning... you'll want another one!!

My most sincere congratulations on your purchase! May it bring you great satisfaction, too.

Stainz

Stainz...thank you for a couple reasons. I'll admit it was primarily you and Xtroopers picture posts that kept me satisfied while on the hunt and waiting for delivery. You guys take great pics btw. I read and reread all your posts (crazy about the grip issues - mine are absolutely gorgeous and fit the 627 like a glove) and couldn't stop. I searched every blood work, UDR, 627 thread I could find and tried to sit patiently while the deal was done. You guys in a round about way helped me deal with my impatience. so thanks. I could look at these revolvers all day long. Now I can handle one all day long. I sit here now, waiting to take off for the LGS to see if they have a set of monos for range time...but I too will admit, these eagles that came on the gun are absolutely gorgeous and hate to swap them...damn that pinky finger I have!!! LMAO

Sinko....already considered that and know its going to be the case. I love my custom 1911s....but DANG I LOVE this 627PC. Its freaking me out man! LOL thanks to Stainz and another member, I already have my IWB Lobo on order. IWB is my preferred method that is so comfortable for me...dunno if its my body type or what, but IWB is what works for me everytime. I got the horsehide IWB without cylinder boning and I just need to tell Ray what color I want...I'm leaning toward natural tan to match the awesome grips. 4-6 weeks on that. Not like it matters being IWB but I do have lighter colored gun belts anyhow.

fyimo....I was really thankful to the dealer I got it from. First class and turned his end around same day, can't ask for more. There was one slightly scary aspect to the deal.

I had been tracking the gun via the USPS website. The dealer upgraded me to Express which is guaranteed overnight. Anyhow, I saw the entry that the gun arrived at our local sorting office. I then see the entry online that it left the sorting facility at approx. 1 oclock. Knowing my FFL was out on delivery I called him to let him know that it was in transit. He told me that he may miss the delivery but was stopping home and often catches his regular mailman on the road because he's so consistent on his delivery time.

I check the status online and I recoil at the sight that it says, "Delivery attempt failed, no one to accept and sign for" OH NO..... moments later I get a call from my FFL where he tells me this: He says "I ran into the mailman on the street per usual
and ask him, 'hey you have one on the truck for me'." The mailman says, "uh no, not today". what????? He went on to tell me that when he got home moments later, a box was on his porch, but not left by his regular mailman.

Written on the box is "Signature Waived". Apparently a substitute postman had taken it upon himself to waive the signature on his own and left my beauty sitting on his front porch. double

Sure enough I go online and 10 minutes after the "Delivery attempt failed" entry is another entry stating "Delivery complete, Signature waived". Holy moly, thankfully my FFL had returned within moments to find it. He's one of these residential FFLs in my general neighborhood and I'm sure people know he is...and would hate for prying eyes to keep a watch out for packages being left on his stoop by lazy mailmen. Signature is the law on handguns and I just wonder how a postman can take matters into his own hands on something like this..but disaster averted. I'm sure I'm being over dramatic, as having a business myself am surprised at how many signature required packages get left at our place of business without ever signing for anything. go figure.

Nonetheless, it all happened withing a 10-15 minute window so I was relieved to say the least.

Well its time to run over to my LGS and see about additional ammo. I only have one box of Hornady HP in 158 grn and need to remedy that. I might even see if they have something cheaply priced in the way of holsters while I wait for my Lobo...which incidentally, is a real bargain...costs less than the mass produced Galcos and the like. I might just put that into ammo instead.

Again thanks guys for all the reviews you had done in the past. Stainz...yes I am already thinking about adding a PC629. 44 mag in this platform may not be optimal comfort shooting or very economical for ammo, but the way this thing is built and finished, I can see it happening. These guns are going to get me rolling on reloading too, I just know it. I, like you, find myself saying, "Its just so sweet that I want 2!" Besides, all my guns will one day go to my two sons who are only 8 and 9 now. I simply can't have one gun for one kid and not one going to the other. LOL...its a great justification of getting two of everything! At least I keep telling myself that. Pics of my 627 to be posted soon....its too beautiful not to take some gunporn pics of!

Congratulations on picking up one of the finest modern S&Ws. I was pretty sure you'd like it once you got your hands on it.

Like Stainz, I ended up with two of these and can't imagine I would want to trade out of either one. And I too am considering adding a .44 version, even though I am sure I would shoot only .44 specials in it.

I'm still looking for the right handle. The boots and modern long stocks don't quite fit my hands. Maybe some classic RB combats would be right.

Here's one of mine with some accessories.

DC...you are so right.

I saw these on another forum members 627 but cannot find the thread again...these look perfect to me.

Congrats on your purchase.
It is true what several previous posters mentioned, you will probably want at least two.
I bought the re issue like yours and then had a chance on an original one. Couldn't turn it down.
I carry the re issue one quite a bit. It is really not that bad to carry. I use the S&W combat grips and I really like it.:D

What exactly are the S&W combat grips if I may ask? any pics?

I did pick up a set of monos tonight and tested them out...they feel real comfortable and can see using those for extended range shooting, but I am a wood lover by nature. Oh I also picked up a few more boxes of ammo. Federal 180 grn Vital shocks, some Hornady 158 grn. for SD and some others for the range.

Pote,

I just received my PC 627 this last Thursday. I have enjoyed your reports and have also laughed at your excitement, I say laughed at but really was laughing at myself as I could completely relate to what you were saying.
This 'gun thing' is really something.

I have also read with interest the inquiry on grips and am finding that the grips supplied with the gun are just WAY too small for my handes. The gun feels unbalanced and top heavy.
I found that a set of Eagle Grips, Rosewood, round to squarebutt conversion grips were just the ticket, kind of.
They fill out my hand just about perfect, can arguably be concealed but , and here is my dilema, they probably won't allow the use of the 5 star speedloaders I intend to use.
I may try to find the grips like the ones Stainz and DCWison posted about.
Either way, this gun is amazing, although I haven't been to the range yet, the package is just something to be admired.

peppercorn....did the excitement really show that much? LOL :o

show some pics of your new grips if you can. seems to be the one thing the 627 calls for. Although....I can see the reason for the small factory grips. If you think of it, this is designed as the ultimate defense revolver (hmm, they should call it that) and therefore, the grips play the role. they are for conceal, not for long range sessions. but we all love this gun so much, it begs for grips that ARE for long range sessions. I also admit the Hogue, roundbutt monos are super comfortable...but this gun is so gorgeous, it begs for high end, beautiful wood. its a conundrum. LOL

I put Herret Jordan style grips on mine. They are much better than the factory eagle grips

Pote-
On the combat grips there is a set in the classifieds right now under accessories.
The ones listed are square butt for a K frame and you would need the round butt for a N frame.
I like them, some people do not. It just depends on how they fit your hand. They fit me well, and they look pretty darn neat.:D

OK, so the excitement was subtle but if a person was to read between the lines it was detectable, being of like mind may have something to do with it also.;)

The grips pictured below were/are for the 629 in the photo. I just swaped them temporarily to get a better 'feel' for what I want to do with the 627.
With these on the 627 I realize that what I am looking for is a larger diameter and longer wood grip that will work with the speedloaders. The Herret Jordans , pictured in this thread, and the combats mentioned are two that may fill this bill.

The Herrets look good, about how far do they extend below the frame?
Also, I have noticed this before in a photo you posted and wondered, why does the hammer on your gun 'appear' to be on 'half cock'?

Did S&W make real wood 'N' frame round to square grips?
