Is it safe to dry fire a Smith Model 10 if you use those red aluminum snap caps with the rubber primer dots? I have some around to action test my USFA single action, but figured they'd work in the Model 10 as well. The shop manual says not to dry fire the 10 unless snap caps are used. Do those common red snap caps work in these for dry fire testing?

Surely is and I use them all the time for practice. One of the best training tools available for trigger control and sight alignment. Fire away knowing you're not damaging the revolver.

I use them for all of the calibers I shoot and never have had a problem with the firing pins. Before a match I'll shoot 50 of them to warm up with.

It is safe to dry fire your Model 10 with no snap caps. However, since you have them already, load up the cylinder with the snap caps and dry fire to your heart's content.

Thanks to both of you for the advice. It's good to know they'll do double duty then. I was going to occasionally use them for double action control practice-- nothing much, but once in awhile.

Does it really hurt the revolver to dry fire without snap caps. How do you know the past history and if these were used by a previous owner. Were do you check for any damage, firing pin?

No, Yes. Maybe?
I can't say for certain.
I've had the hammer nose tip break on 2 S&Ws and 1 Colt Cobra.
Was the cause dry firing? Don't know. All 3 were used when I got them but showed no signs of abuse. The Smiths broke during dry firing and the Colt went on the second rd in a cyl.
Bottom line, snap caps are cheep and they can't hurt.

I'd surely recommend a set of snap caps. I have then for my M65, M625 MG in LC and my 4006. Great way to practice.

Well can someone recomend which ones they think are the best, I've seen several types.
