I was told that s&w made the 908 obsolete and they (s&w) don't have parts for sale anymore.

I was thinking of getting a few spare parts..... But where can I find an extractor for a 908 with spring and pin? Anyone know if the parts for a 3913 or other models are the same as 908?

I noticed there are several extractor springs available categorized by color...red, yellow, blue. Which one was standard on the 908?

I called rhem up to buy a magazine catch and the nut. They no longer have any. The guy at s&w said they obsoleted the pistol and sold parts to brown ells, midway, etc. There are many parts that are shared with other pistols like the 3914 so maybe those parts will be around for longer.

I did figure out from the s&w parts list that a few pistols share the same extractor so i can get that.

Anyone know anything about which extractor spring for the 908?

Try Numrich as well. They buy a lot of orphaned parts.

Numrich has parts. I assume that S&W may keep the parts around that are common to many different pistols.

just bought new recoil spring and metal guide rod for the 908, from numrich..

Other than the mag catch and related parts, the plastic sights, plastic recoil guide rod, which other parts are specific to the 908? I looked through some parts in the S&W parts lists and most other parts from the 908 appear in a lot of other pistols.

I actually just went through the 908 S&W parts list and searched every part. All the parts except the ones I mention above are common to a whole bunch of other pistols.

Even if you were to gather all the assorted extractor springs that have been listed for use in the various compact 9's (3913 & variants, and the CS9, and not counting the larger framed 2, 3 & 4-digit single stack 9's), they might not be of much use to you in the event your 908 ever requires a new extractor and/or extractor spring.

Determining which spring is required to bring any particular single stack 9 into the recommended extractor tension range (4-7 lbs) requires the use of a force dial gauge ($150 tool), and fitting a new extractor requires a factory bar gauge ($70 GO/NO-GO tool) for fitting (filing) the adjustment pad on a new extractor. This bar gauge checks the dimension between the inside of the extractor hook and the opposite breech face shoulder.

Since S&W is still able to make the 3913TSW (and variants) for existing LE customer agencies (if they can't talk them into buying M&P 9c's, of course ;) ), they're probably going to remain able to perform repairs on them for some years.

Besides, unless you abuse your extractor by loading the chamber directly and letting the slide run forward on a chambered round (instead of loading the chamber from the magazine, as intended), or you're going to leave the chamber loaded (and the extractor spring under constant tension) for 10-20 years, you're probably going to be using that same extractor & extractor spring for at least 10-12K rounds, or at least 10 years, or more. (Unless you just happened to have received one of those seldom occurring "defective parts", of course.)

You plan to shoot that little gun for 10K, 15K, 20K or more rounds?

You might wear out a hammer or drawbar (rounding off the DA hooks on either) within that time. Maybe. Maybe not. Dunno.

I've replaced some extractors and extractor springs in some older 3rd gen 9's, .40's & .45's ... but the only one I remember having to replace in a 3913 was a very early production model, and according to the owner he'd bought it new and had used it for something like more than 12 years for weekend competitions and practice. The hook had finally broken after so many years of hard use. The guy's a real shooting enthusiast. (I also had to replace the hammer & drawbar in his 3193, and one other, due to worn hooks.)

Now, I would stock up on some recoil & mag springs, for periodic replacement, if you're going to shooting that much. :)

Putting aside one of the metal guide rod assemblies might be handy (although don't be surprised if the standard one used in the "budget" 908 runs a lot longer than you might give it credit for).

Now, those plastic sights, on the other hand ...

Enjoy responsibly shooting the 908. :)

Just my thoughts.

Thanks. Good advice. I already have an extra set of wolff mag springs and recoil spring and a factory recoil spring. I have a backup mag catch and mag catch nuts. I also have a backup plastic recoil spring guide rod. The plastic doesn't bother me (glock, beretta, etc use plastic). After reading about the extractor stuff I certainly don't need any of that.

Anyone know where to get spare sights. They don't seem to be in stock anywhere. They don't seem to be a standard dovetail.

I'll probably never shoot 5000 rounds through this 908 in my lifetime. If the sights break (or anythink else) it'll probably be cause I dropped it on the ground.

I'd call S&W and ask about replacement steel sights, or else check Trijicon or some other vendor that makes sights for companies and individuals. I've replaced plastic sights on Chiefs Special guns before, using an assortment of different steel sights.

The plastic mag catch nut is intended to be installed just once. If it's ever removed, it should be replaced. The inside of the plastic nut has a raised ring that snaps over a corresponding raised ring on the steel mag catch body.

I've had a couple of repair mag catches, nuts & springs for quite a while without having needed them. I've fired thousands of rounds through my CS9 & CS45 (combined, but more of those have been through my CS45). I know folks who have used Value Line guns for many years, and none of them have ever called me to repair/replace their mag catches.

Thanks again. Trijicon seems to make the only after market sights I can find. They are not cheap. I just wanted a back up in case I broke mine. 150$ for trijicon is too much for a backup. The dovetail on the 908 is too large to take a 3913 sight (novak). I can always call S&W. They might still have a few around.

I heard people broke the plastic sights but it may be pretty rare. I suppose the front sight could get broken easily if it hits something.

Does the rear sight hold plungers and springs in the slide? It looked like that from the schematics on Nunrich.

BTW thanks for the tips on the mag catch. I already replaced mine with a metal one. The old one was plastic (nothing wrong with it but it bothered me). I used a new nut. I guess I wanted a spare catch and nut(since its unique to the 908)...but its probably overkill.

Yes, the same nylon & steel plunger (and their springs) are located in the slide under the rear sight base.

Call or email Novaks and ask about some standard (plain or 3-dot) sights for your 908, if you want to have some steel sights someday. They don't charge much to install them on a slide, as I recall. Genuine Novak Sights
