i am a s&w collector like most here.i am trying to find out about what my ar-15 should sell for,i found another smith i am wanting and will probably have to part with the ar.what i have is a complete ar-15,it was built in the early 80's,lower is an e.a.15 lower, black,a couple of handling marks, serial no. #E A 8851,i am not sure of the upper,16 in. barrell, theaded with flash guard, has the carry handle, with a 3 position collapsable stock.i have owned this ar since the late 80's and it has always shot great.i probably have not shot even 1000 rds. thru it.i have noticed the lowers alone selling for around 600.00,i guess because of some pre-ban law in some states, and was wondering if the lower a digit serial no. is more sought after than the higher ones.i do not have much knowledge of these but if i do sell or trade i want it to be fair for both partys.any info. appreciated, thanks.also i was not sure where to post this and if not in the right place, could someone please move it for me,thanks again.

Any ban state residents (such as New York) will pay a premium for a verifiable pre-ban AR or lower.

Keep in mind that we're used to getting raked over the coals by our legislators as well as non ban state residents trying to make a buck. ;)

As long as the serial number is from the pre September 14, 1994 range, the actual number won't matter, except to a collector.

As for the price. I would suggest looking at completed on-line gun auctions for the final selling price. That should give you some idea as to market value.

Good luck.

For what its worth I sold a Colt AR-15 sporter model pre-ban about 2 months ago. I had receipt to confirm pre-ban and obviously the serial number did the same. Only thing my didn't have was the bayonet lug. Less than 1000 round through it, excellent condition for $925. I did quite a bit of looking on GB and prices ranged from $900-$1100.

thanks for the replies,i am sure i posted this in the wrong section, could someone move it for me to the correct place, thank you very much.

E.A. is Essential Arms if I remember right. Presumably the upper and bbl - if lacking special marks to differentiate them - are put generic put togethers. Double check for Colt markings, that would improve value. Other variables include if it has a 5.56mm chamber, rate of twist on the bbl, bbl weight and contour, etc.

Most places that still have a ban in place either make it hard to bring in preban "assault weapons" from out of state or else have loop-hole work arounds such as the California "bullet point" ARs. The older Colts have both "pre ban value" (presumably to those in NY state) and Colt collector value (such as the SP1s).

I'd guess 600 to 700 dollars, though it is shaping up to be a strange year. Wait for an AR shortage (or fear of one) at the end of they year and you can probably get a grand for it.
