Mdl 29 in 41 Magnum

I was at a small gun show near my home this morning. It's a show put on by a club and held at the facility. Nice little show, where I once bought a near new Model 10-5 for very short money. I keep going back because they are nice folks and I hope to repeat my previous success.

No luck today as the gun prices were typical of gun shows, that is high, retail and even above.

I was looking at one dealer and they had an 8 3/8" barreled Mdl 29-2 which the tag said was "41 Magnum". That caught my attention and I asked to look at it. The barrel was marked 41 Magnum, when I opened the cylinder the frame was marked as a 29-2. The dealer told me he had a presentation case for it, but I didn't ask to see it.

When I got home I looked in the SCSW, but didn't see any reference to a .41 Mag variant. I thought all .41 Mags were Mdl 57 or 58.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Mis marked barrel?

Probably re-chambered. I ran into a model 28-2 chambered in 44 special

Probably a mis-marked model 57. I have seen 41 Mags with Mod 29 marked frames before.

I've read (here) about that happening, but never seen it before.
So, does that add or subtract from the value?

Is it possible that the barrel was mismarked?

if I am remembering right, ed or someone once mentioned some mismarked guns/calibres from the factory......... did the barrel & cylinder/crane look orig to the frame? Everything match in color? cyl timing good? If the price was right, & it looked original, I'd probaly get it.......... did you ask the dealer if he knew whether or not it was a rework?

It looked all original. It was in very good shape, at least to my eye. Not being a collector or having the knowledge base that a lot of people here have, I didn't ask a lot of questions. I was more curious than interested in buying.

Thanks. I'm not a collector, more of an accumulator, and at that it's of guns that I can carry and shoot. As nice looking as this was, and I can appreciate the quality of the workmanship, it's not the sort of thing I'd buy.

Got just the opposite - have a model 29 with the frame marked "57" . . . shoots just the same . . . only place I've heard it was worth more was on Gun Broker - seems that on there they are extremely rare and that will cause the price to rise a at least another zero or two . . . .

A couple of months ago a guy was trying to sell a "collector grade Smith & Wesson 6 1/2" model 29-2 .44 magnum MISMARKED MODEL 57" for $1895.00 on GB.It is still there but now he thinks it is worth more as he is wanting $1795.00 buy it now price.Some folks just don't really want to sell their guns I guess.

I have a Model 57 no dash the model of which is stamped over a M29-2. It takes a loops to see it, but it's there. And for the record, cylinder and barrel are .41 Magnum, including barrel marking.

There is no overstamp on this one, but other than that, it's exactly as you describe. I didn't check or ask the seller to check to see which round would fit in the chamber.

Not that I think anyone would actually do this, but would it be possible to change the barrel and cylinder to make a M29 into a M57?

I had a 44 Spl. one time...The frame was stamped inside the crane as a 29-3.

I guess it happens from time to time.

What I meant was they replaced the barrel and cylinder. I have come across a few similar things like the one I mentioned.

Re-chambering does not necessarily always mean boring out cylinders and barrels.
