I don't think it's sad, just the way it is, but I like having one on if I'm away from home. Of course, I don't have a cell phone on my person either.

I quit wearing a watch over 30 years ago. Even before cell phones, there were clocks nearly everywhere you go. In the rare event there wasn't a clock within spitting distance, you could always ask some type "A" person what time it was, as they always had a watch.

Besides, when I was raised, I was taught "Lumbardi Time" as far as being on time. Basically if you are somewhere right on time, you are 30 minutes late. This was my High School coach's rule and has served me well to this day.

My Seadweller is from 1996 and the band has gotten stretched out and the clasp is kinda shot. Just got off the phone with Rolex and the cost of a new band is $1,200 WITH trading in my old band I only paid $2800 for the whole %*&$ watch!
Looks like I'm gonna keep wearing it with that $3.98 nylon/velcro band I bought for it.
Jeeze Those things must be made by naked forest virgins or something!!

The fakes used to be all the rage down here. That has fallen off somewhat in the last few years, but they are still around. I think a fake runs around 30.00 dollars and ten dollars more if you want the "Certificate of Authenticity" (which only has a few slight errors in spelling if you bother to read it).

A wide variety of "versions" exist, both womens' and mens' models, colors and styles as well. They have the jump second hand instead of sweep and are battery operated and quite cheap although they look good enough from a distance.

It's a crappy photo, but the best I can do with the equipment I've got. This "fake" was one I bought for my Dad when he was till alive (so about 20 years ago now as he died in 1994). We did not bother with the Certificate of Authenticity. It reads THURSDAY because the battery died years ago and I simply keep the watch because it was his, not because it has any actual value apart from that.

The jewelry store (liscensed Rolex vendor-I'll not mention the name but is an old line New Orleans Jeweler with stores on Canal St and in Lakeside Mall) had a promotion-20% off any Rolex if you trade in a swiss watch. I was wearing my dad's seiko that was square and made to look like a Cartier only with "Seiko" across the face and a quartz movement ( I think he paid $150 for it). Took it off and gave it to the sales lady and asked if this will do. She knocked 20% off the sales price-I had it shipped to Houston to save the sales tax and Voila-was into a then $3,600 plus tax Rolex for $2,880 OTD. ( I think they fired her as she wasn't there the next time I went to the store about two months later) The Seadweller then and now was not considered a low end-but was/is a super charged submariner. It is the only piece of bling (other than my wedding ring) that I own or will ever own-unless I hit the lottery-then I'm a getting one of those BIG solid gold ones with alternating diamond-sapphire-ruby & emerald all over it that screams OIL FIELD TRASH FROM SOUTH LOUISIANA .

50 years ago, about the only guys wearing Rolex were America's Cup sailors, F1 drivers and guys named Smith who worked for Universal-Export Company. When I was 16, I wanted to be one of those guys and really wanted a Rolex. I learned to sail, drove some sports cars and worked for a 3-letter agency for a few years, but by the time I could actually think about buying a Rolex, the only guys I knew wearing them were lawyers. (I married into 5 generations of them.) No disrespect to the profession intended, Caj, but that wasn't the imaginary image of myself I wanted to project. I went the other route and have taken to wearing a Vostok, just to make people ask "where the h... did you get that?"

I've always thought that a Rolex owner is no more supposed to complain about service costs, than is a Mercedes owner.

You're supposed to realize when you shell out for the purchase that you're paying for status more than for value.

Caj, I spent about $1200 to recondition my first Submariner (dial and bezel had faded from so much sunlight exposure, 18k/stainless band was beat up) some years ago -- it came back looking brand new.
We do have a certified Rolex watch technician here in Lake Charles -- it is fascinating to watch what they do -- he let me watch for about 40 minutes as he was working on a customer's watch. He is at Nederland Jewelers on Nelson road. I have a GMT-II I wear daily -- the bands now appear better built and the bezels are ceramic and do not fade.
I'd say spend the money (for future value) -- I do like the Nato bands that were on some of the posts -- that black and white band looks cool.

I'm a very simple man. I love wheelguns instead of the tactical tupperware. I prefer a lever-gun to a whiz bang AR. I drive a Ford F150 instead of a sports car. And I wear a cheap watch that's been accidently run over by my truck and keeps on going in perfect time.

So forgive my ignorance when I ask a question gleaned from a post above. A Rolex gains/loses time because it is an automatic watch instead of a quartz?

If the answer is "yes", then I'm sorry, but I'd no sooner think of buying one than I would a Korth that can't pattern a group on Elmer Keith's hat. Never been one to buy a fancy brand name just to say I own the brand name.
