Rolex can stick it!!!

I think Rolex's tool watches look great w black nylon straps.

You could look for a used strap w less stretch/scratches.

While I don't own a Rolex (and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night), I do own a Breitling Chronomat, ca. 1999. It's been CLA'd twice, and I just got it out of the shop for a mainspring replacement (tech did a CLA while it was open). Just under $600 for everything. It's keeping better time than ever. The tech mentioned that the new lubes will not evaporate and leave the solids. Everything evaporates now, so the CLA's will be every five years, from now on.

I gave up on real Breitling bands and bracelets. I've bought nice leather for under $40 on eB**. I've also ventured into a pilot-type bracelet for under $70. All worked well. I just can't bring myself to buying a Breitling pilot for $1200.

Maratac makes some great NATO straps. I wear my dive watch on one and it is so comfortable. I would buy another real Rolex bracelet for that watch, but not wear it all the time. Use the NATO for daily wear, and put the bracelet on for nice occasions.

A 1996 SD case will have lug holes, so putting on the bracelet is easy.

A big plus for the NATO strap is that both spring bars have to fail at the same time for the watch to fall off your wrist. With a bracelet, only one spring bar, or one screw pin is all it takes. That's something to think about on an expensive watch.

I've seen some NATO's made from ostrich that look really good.

and i thought i had problems because i could not find a replacement band for less than $8 for my timex. love the $35 watch. it's been though hell and back as i wore it when riding the 4-wheeler. it's hit a gravel road at 70 mph, taken rocks at twice that speed. been submerged in thick mud and basically still looks like new. it's just a little dirty and needs a new band...

I bought my Rolex about 23 years ago and it has been the absolute best watch I have ever owned and have never had any problems with it. I wear it under water when Scuba Diving, while shooting, and almost each & every day. Last year I decided to send it into NY for a face color change (Champagne to Black) repair of a few dented links, and a complete general overhaul. About 2 weeks later they sent me the estimate ($1,700.00) and I was a bit taken back, but I sent them a check and said to go ahead. 6 weeks later I got my President back and I have to say the watch looked brand new! I was so impressed with their workmanship I sat down and wrote them a letter.

Yes, $1,700.00 bucks is a LOT of money, but given the fact that the watch is now almost 25 years old that comes to less than $70 bucks a year! I don't think that's a bad deal.

When you buy expensive cars, watches, houses, etc. you should also expect the maintenance to be pricey as well. I'm sure it would cost a lot more to fix a Browning Midas Grade Superposed Shotgun than it would a Remington 870.
Just saying...........

Send that puppy in and then enjoy it!

Get a couple of NATO Bond straps in a few colors and you are good to go.

Or how about an Olongapo band?

Years ago I sat down to a slot machine next to a old man. He ran out of money and pulled a "citizen" gold watch off his wrist, handed it to me and said give me $10s for her. I tossed him a roll of quarters. I got took though as I never wore it. I took it to a jeweler and he said its the real deal.

Let me be the first to not feel sorry for you.
You own a Rolex. Your Rolex is broken.
That's called a "high-class problem". :)

Just thank God that you don't have any low-class problems today. :)

I was surfing around to see what was going on.

I had to sign in just to "like" this comment. :D

..and Smith & Wesson watches,,they're not good enough??

I just wish I could afford a solid gold Hamilton 992B. :(

I'll have to keep pocketing the regular 992B that I have. Never could stand a wristwatch...too much of a fad anyway. Numbers too small and hard to read.
I have a Sangamo Special from 1921 that I am fond of. It has a gold fill Wadsworth case. The dealer I bought it from noted that solid gold cases (in addition to being priced through the roof due to gold prices and scarcity) are not as durable, gold being a fairly soft metal.

I say go for it. I've done some research, and evidently you can't take it with you.

Spend some money, get a new band and reconditioning, and you're set for the next 16 years, right?

And it's an investment over time, of a sort. Just like a Rolls Royce - I can't afford one, but I'm glad someone can.

Besides, having a vinyl strap on that watch is like having rubber grips on a Registered Magnum, yes?

Shhhh, this is a secret, don't let it get around. Other brand clasp or exspansion bands will fit a Rolex.

I am kinda bummed out to learn "Rolex" only has one "L" . The one I bought in Korea has two. Do you think they cheated me out of my $32.50?

Submariner Rolex

I bought a new one in 1989 with out a date for $1100 and no tax, it broke about 3 years ago and I had the dealer send it to Rolex to fix it came back just like new but it cost me $1020 now its locked in the gunsafe and on Sundays I wear a Invicta Rolex look-a-like, through the week I carry a Waltham pocket watch adjusted to 5 positions and 17 jewels that was made in 1945 and runs maybe closer than the Rolex. I still have my Concord Impressario somewhere. It had the Zenith movement that was certified as a chronometre. Yeah... not just a watch...you could use it to compute longitude. The alligator skin band rotted off. I replaced that with Timex bands as time went on. It was an automatic btw.

Eventually shaking it and banging on it no longer sufficed to keep it running.

Now I wear a Casio. I sort of miss the tick of my Concord though

I have one, a retirement gift. It definitely needs attention. It has a small crack in the bezel almost un noticeable, and the dial probably needs redoing. A "Bombe" with 18K bezel and date, I think it's called. It now sports an aftermarket non Rolex stainless steel and gold clasp bracelet. The original was Alligator by Rolex, but it wore out.

I have a few Seiko's, Tag's, and other wristwatches, autos, manuals, vintage and modern.....I think Rolex's maintenance prices are nuts. I'm leavin' it to the highest bidder. Keeps good time though. Never thought I'd ever hear a lawyer bitch about money though? Times must be really tough all around. Hey......was that an ambulance siren I just heard?

Cheers;
Lefty
