Just got back from the Range, I'm impressed but concerned.

I put 140 rounds through my M&P, I shot a way better grouping than my Ruger P95 but..

1)Was out of practice
2)First time firing a 40 S&W... I think the accuracy could be better, but I know it is just me. I caught myself involuntary flinching at times.. I'll get the hang of it. I'm loving this thing so far.

Even at 100 rounds it was running hot, I ran it new out of the box and it was already oiled, etc. Was curious though the polymer on the frame and the muzzle of the gun had a slight reddish discoloration. This went away but a little still remains. Is this just wear and tear, is this normal?

How much abused can an M&P take with sustained fire?

I fired Wally World Federal 40 S&W. Is it just dirty ammo?

Have a M&P40 as well and the last trip to the range did cost me 200rds. The total round count might be close to 1000.

I had no problems at all. After each shooting I clean it, either the same day or next day at latest! No discoloration at all!

Ammowise I mainly use Federal Champion FMJ and Black Hills FMJ at the range. But I also did shot Winchester and Remington, both FMJ. Sometimes I shoot JHP from the manufacturers named above. No problems at all.

I was happy with the Fed. Champion FMJ. It was a bit messy but I had no jams.

Edit: The trigger wasn't bad at all by the way.

Manufactured 6/26/12. I've been trained with Glocks for my armed security certification and it was comparable. I've heard some complaints on the triggers in the past, is it possible my M&P40 got an upgraded trigger at the factory?(I heard they started doing this. Just now sure when it started.)

Don't know about sustained fire, but my M&P FS .40 had 16,000 rounds (probably ten times that in dry firing) downrange before I needed to replace the striker assy. I use it in USPSA/IDPA matches.
Yours will likely do the same..........

I would think that reloading several mags at a time should give the barreL time to cool down plenty.
Unless you have fifty mags loaded and just pumped them out as fast as possible.
I have several thousand rounds through my M&P 40FS and have had no problems.
Shoot it, clean it, love it and shoot it some more.

Fed. Champion has always burned super clean compared to the comparable to me. Love the stuff.

I've had a few range trips with my 40VTAC varying 4-600 rounds, no overheating, no issues.

Whoa this is like my exact experience with this gun. Picked it up Saturday. New to the gun, same amount of ammo, same overheating, same discoloration....weird.

I've never had any discoloration after a trip to the range. Only the typical carbon build up by the muzzle on the frame.

It wiped clean after it cooled off at home. Still it freaked me out at first. Looks fine now.

I don't know how much the gun can take, but when practicing on steel plates in our 100+ heat, the barrel gets hot enough to brand with, and I get enough pretty quickly.

Lots of folks with their first combat tupperware get all freaky that it is going to melt or fall apart. It won't.

could it be the shipping grease since you did say that you shot it right out of the box?

I was actually suspecting that. I'll give it a nice cleaning and oiling and I'll see if I get the same issue. Though it might be awhile, I have to buy text books for this semester. :(

Weird thing is it was red on the gun, but wiping it down it was black on the cloth.

Would you please take a detail picture and post it online?
It might help...

I cleaned everything up already, It looks fine. I was just curious what was causing that particular color so nobody else ends up freaking out like I did. It appeared to be some kind of residue.

I've had my FS9 look red on the nose after a long day shooting. I ran thru about 500 reloads. It was the powder burn. WIped right off. Never thought a thing about it.

You mean yours looked like this?

Completely normal. wipe down, sleep with, repeat.

Yes that was it, thanks for clearing that up. Really appreciate it.

Dunno to what extremes the factory went to try and destroy the M&P during R&D ... but during one fed agency's in-house testing, I thought I recalled they fired 10,000 rounds each through some test guns over the course of only 2 days. They were pleased with the results and authorized them as optional purchase duty weapons.

You gonna shoot more than that in that short of time?

I've not fired more than maybe 500 rounds through either of my M&P pistols during a single session, without any noticeable ill effects. ;) I don't shoot as much as I used to, though.

I think it fair to suspect that the budget lines of any of the major ammo companies might sometimes seem "dirtier" than their premium (more costly) lines. ;) I've fired Winchester USA/Ranger, Federal American Eagle and Remington UMC/Express and thought all of them produced more fouling, soot, etc than some of the more costly ammo lines.

ive had the same problem but i was using blazer 160gr it was the powder it wiped right off
