If you like the shape and size of the stock AR grip and are just wanting to add some extra texture, try stippling the grip with a cheap woodburning tool. Worst case is that you completely ruin a $5 grip that you were going to replace anyway.

You can even try stippling magazines as well.

I think the BCM Mod1 will be the next grip I try on something. I've read good things about it.

That looks really cool. I need to do some research on how that is done.

It's easy, but very time consuming.

I used a Dremel soldering iron/woodburning tool. I used the fine tip so I didn't get too rough of a texture. The longer you hold the iron to the polymer, the more it bumps up and folds over, giving it a rougher texture. Get a scrap piece of polymer or a cheap part to practice on. Even a kids toy would give you an idea of how it's done.

It isn't too time consuming if you use a really hot burning iron. Best advice I have is to try it out on an air pistol or something cheap to perfect your technique.

To the OP, I may not be much help in deciding which grip to go with, but from my experience it is VERY difficult to find a darn little spring after you hear that tiny little *TWANG* that a spring makes as it shoots by yous ear. So you probably already knew, but just a precaution, there's two tiny springs that are housed in the handle so as you're removing it, keep an eye out for them.

That's why you pay attention to what you are doing and back out the grip bolt very slowly.

Haha, ya I decided whenever I do anything on it, I do it very slowly. There's always a srcew/spring/pin that you'd never guess was there

Ah, I see you've learned that lesson the hard way, too.

Those little compartments are OK, but if the cap falls out, you lost what was in there. Some of them have a nice clip that keeps them from falling out, but then they rattle every single step you take.
Be careful of what you put in the secret compartments, you may forget what is in there, or it will rattle and you can't forget. Plus it is added weight and after a few miles you will know what the axiom of ounces are pounds and pounds are pain really means. Plus I can't stand rattles.
Hogue for the overmolded and CAA for the form fit hard plastic.

That's the nice thing about the MIAD grip inserts. They click into place instead of just pushing in and sitting in a groove. They also have a rubber insert with holes in it so the typical items stored won't move at all. They don't even touch the inside of the grip.

They do. I tried a MOE+ for a few weeks and used my MIAD insert. I switched back to the MIAD yesterday.

I haven't seen the standard MIAD insert/core for sale at any store. If you're a member on ARFCOM, you can post in the "want to buy" section and I think you'll have some luck. Or you could just cruise the for sale threads every so often because I see them in there all the time. People buy the larger battery/firing pin cores and sell the factory one. Marshall at Primary Arms might be able to help you out as well. He's known for doing those kinds of things.

my 15-22 is a range plinker so no need for secret compartments. i keep my miad cap out since all my tools are in my bag next to me. saves weight.

I bought my Hogue with the insert and used it once. It's now laying the the junk box. I think they are more trouble than they are worth.

Hogue grips on my AR and 15-22.

I don't use it, but the receiver extension tube is a pretty good sized area for storage. A Baggie will help keep small items from rattling and make it easier to find when the stuff falls out.
