Ignorant beginner with a question about 1911's...

Just joined the forum here, want to throw in my 2 cents on the 1911. I've got a couple, Rock Island Govt and Colt XSE LWT Commander. The Rock Island is so-so, had a few problems with it, don't really care much for it.
By observation, Rock Island guns are like Norincos. The major components (barrel, slide and frame) are first rate. The small parts, not so much. Replace those and you should have a first rate defensive firearm.

It's the number's thing!

1911 45 auto

454 Chevy, 427 Ford, 426 Hemi, 389 GTO, 1969 Comaro, 427 Mustang, 440 GTX ;)

It's American, it's big, and you don't see Glocks at a Bullseye match. Even after 13 there's is still room for 1 more, I haven't decided which one yet. :D They go from "stock out of the box" to "custom built" with all match parts from Brownell's.

The 1911's do get a bad rap quality wise. I purchased a new 1911 in the 70's( new colt), the 80's(new colt) and the 90's( new springfield armory). None of them worked properly right out of the box. It took a well used chinese norinco 1911a1 to show me what all the 1911 hype was all about. What an awesome pistol it really is. But on the other hand all my CZ pistols have a flawless track record too. After having so many non working new 1911's I purchased every dvd on how to tune, tweek and repair the 1911's. I did fix my #3 non functioning new 1911 the extractor needed tuning. With the 1911 along with the books of knowledge there is nothing we can't do to them.

The 45acp is a man stopper.

I took my norc 1911 and installed a new sportsmans guide $59 45acp barrel, with a CDNN national match IAI barrel bushing and added a full length uide rod kit with an 18# recoil spring and even with a loose slide she shoots 1 clover leaf per 8rd mag no matter who shoots it using wolf 45acp ball ammo at 25yds. I'm thinking with the 200gr swc target ammo it should shoot even better. I wanted to do a cheap build just to see how accurate it would shoot if everything was low budget and fitted correctly. Orginally the norc was well used and it had a loose barrel bushing fit in the slide. I was advised to leave the frame rail to slide fit alone and make sure the barrel to barrel bushing fit was spot on. They were correct even with a tad loose frame rail to slide fit she is still accurate. I did ramp the disconnector and polish the feed ramp too. It cycles faster, smoother, with less cycle timing because of the lost timing with the over travel. I'm very happy with my norc mods.

What really makes the 1911 so special is that the original design worked pretty well, and was not too overly expensive, especially when you consider the piece of equipment you got for the money.
What makes them special today is how you can buy an $800-2500 1911 that jams on you for a variety of reasons, and you get to brag away about how you had it tuned (For lots more money) and now it works right............
But the original model, and a simple $400-450 RIA work right out of the box without issue.

Sometimes, less is really more.

"classic"..."untouchable"..."best ever"...

I googled "classic"..."untouchable"..."best ever" and it came up with a picture of Ann Margret packing a 1911a1.

I don't like plastic guns any more then plastic woman. I'd rather have dependability, a comfortable gun that shoots every time on the range or in combat, and a comfortable wife who can cook a great meal every time she steps into the kitchen.

They should come from the factory with it.

Phil ..... I watched this twice & there's something missing.... where's the "idiot scratch" under the slide-stop??? All my 1911's have it !! :D
