What is your favorite J frame grip that covers the backstrap, but is still (as much as possible) concealable?
I think the current generation of S&W boot grips are great, but I always end up limiting my range time more than I should. My aching hand -- to be honest even with 130 grain jacketed range ammo fired from a 342 or 340 -- makes me ask for your input.
Thanks in advance,
Scott

The grips on my 642 were not a problem, but a newer
442, which should have had the same grip, were painful.
I replaced them a couple times and then got a set of
Crimson Trace grips. Problem solved. Still work in pocket
holster, but now it's good to shoot. Pain-free.

Pachmayr compact. Helps my big hands hold onto a small gun and it's still concealable. I can shoot 100+ per range session.

For any J-Frame I shoot a lot, Compac's are my first choice...

These factory J frame combat grips have been working out well for me, the back strap is covered and it shifted my hand higher giving me a firmer grasp.

Compared to the K & N Frame versions, their increase in girth is not as pronounced, so it still manages to conceal well.

Crimson Trace LG-405 has a bit of hollow pocket on the backstrap to absorb a bit of recoil. It does work!

The the rubber boot grips, feel a little small to me. The over size combat grips don't feel like they fit, either. I found that gripping lower, helps make up for the shortness of the boot grips. This gives me more muzzle flip. So, I try to stick with ammo with less than 225 foot pounds of energy. Some of the 130 FMJ ammo is well above this, and too hot for range practice.

The Pachmayr Compacs are also my idea of the best combination of concealment and shooting comfort. It took a bit of shooting before my sweat/hand oil took some of the stickiness off the new rubber, but now they don't grab at a covering sweater at all.

The Crimson Trace 405 does have a padded backstrap and I find it to be more comfortable than the stock boot grips, but it's much thinner than the Pachmayr, and also has no place for a pinky finger to fit on the grip. I cannot shoot a gun with the 405 for as long as I can with a Compac, but it's what I have on my daily carry 638 because of the laser.

For my model 37 I have several sets of grips. My favorite, although they don't completely cover the back strap, really absorb recoil, are the factory Target grips for the J-Frame.

I took a set of the Uncle Mikes three finger grips and sawed off the third finger:

The backstrap is covered still and the bottom finger has a bit of a hook to better anchor your hand than the regular two finger version. I really wish Uncle Mike could get back to making these again.
