I feel let down by the NRA speech

I can't comment on the content because I haven't been able to see the entire speech yet. What did strike me almost immediately when I saw the excerpt I have seen was the poor delivery of the speech. I expected a more "polished" presentation. Although I'm sure it's not the case, Mr. LaPierre appeared to be ill prepared and ill at ease. Considering many on the "other side" are politicians, news media, actors, etc., all of whom make their living on their public image/impression, I think the presentation of " our side" fell short.
I hope it was just my perception.

DelFuego,
How can we NOT afford to do it? As Mr. LaPierre said we can have volunteers involved where possible. I also would advise allowing qualified teachers, maybe yourself, the ability to conceal carry while on school grounds.
I'm not really sure what you were expecting the NRA to say as you expressed your disapointment. What they did say makes perfect sense to me. They have put their money where their mouth is by creating the School Shield Task Force and have offered to train and help with any schools needs in order to protect our children.
I'm a proud member of the NRA and would encourage anyone that is not to become one now not later.

Come on! How on earth can we fund cops in every school in the United States? I can't believe that I waited a week for this.

We can afford to send armed soldiers to police other countries but we cannot afford to protect our children?

Obviously we are doomed.

I just want to point the irony in some of your collective arguments.

Public schools are a product of government...
Gun free zones are a product of government...

Now you all are proposing MORE government to fix the problems that government created in the first place?

How about we give parents a choice in how their children should be educated and in what sort of environment that should take place? How about parents get school vouchers and enroll their children in schools that are more aligned with their own belief system, and perhaps have better security, instead of being forced to enroll children into government created shooting galleries?

There's a term "Hard Target" and "Soft Target". Right now schools fall into the first category, courts and such Federal buildings into the second. If someone is going to commit an atrocity the first thing they look for is a soft target, such as a school. Harden that target and they will search for another. The recent shootings have all been "soft", movie theaters, malls, a school. If we're going to look at security around our schools, what about the 1/2 million schools busses that transport kids every day? Sporting events for school kids (ball games), and let's not forget malls and theaters. Our society is full of "soft targets" where mass killings are possible. Which ones do we harden and how? I don't pretend to have the answers, but I do believe these are questions we need to consider.

I do not feel let down by the NRA speech. It didn't go far into detail, but it hit all of the main points except dangerous prescribed drugs for schoolkids (a marginal and debatable point) and widespread concealed carry by adults in and around the schools, which it seemed to hint at by mentioning gun-free zones. It stressed a policeman in every school, which I am strongly in favor of, except that one is not enough. The schools should be able to figure out, or maybe the NRA will tell them if they take the course, that they can't afford sufficient guards, and will need to spend a SMALL amount of money on training armed people who are already on the payroll or already in the area.

You have probably already seen this:

I can't say I was impressed with the speech either. Neither am I surprised. At least I didn't see him say "we need to enforce the gun laws we already have" again...

Carefull what you all wish for...

How about this for a nightmare scenario:

After a couple of months, the Blue Ribbon commission, headed by VP Joe Biden comes out with its recommendation. In order to protect the children, and to protect individual rights, as out lined by the 2nd amendment, the following will take effect immediately. The Department of Homeland Security will now be expanded in scope to protect the children of this great nation. Each school will be allotted one armed TSA agent per 50 students, effective immediately.

Welcome to the biggest expansion of the police state since 9/11. This would appease the left and the right, and the population would cheer. Because after all, what could go wrong?

But, there was no mention of that in just about all the shootings the killer was on psychiatric drugs that have been shown to increase the likelihood of suicide and violent behavior. (Such unstable individuals are more easily influenced by violent media & games also.) My guess is that he knows this, but there's Big Pharma and the medical industry to deal with there.

That is down to a reluctance to speak ill of the dead, even when they were clearly disturbed. This is why few will say out loud that the mother was partly to blame for not securing her firearms when she had doubts about her son's mental state. Nobody wants to go there except a very few like me. Wayne is of the generation that feels inhibited that way.

A portion of the funds given to foreign countries that don't even like us could be reallocated, I'd be just fine with that.

The same way we've funded 10's of thousands for TSA's at airports and Marshalls in every plane.

There are about 99,000 schools in the United States. So, if an officer makes about $65,000 a year, then it would cost about $6,435,000,000 to pay for a program like this. Where is the money going to come from? The school I work for has old computers, dilapidated books, and overflowing students in every classroom. Funding for schools has been dropping for years, and we are supposed to further cut education to put an armed officer in every school?

I just think that the NRA blew a great opportunity to speak to America about reasonable gun control. As for having to register every gun that I have to purchase, so be it. As for banning black rifles, just paint them pink.

Switzerland...............any ideas? Can you learn anything from their laws and how they do things? The government works for you (in theory, I know). So, call them and TELL them what they are going to do for you the voter, that put them there. Why wait for what they will tell you. Grow a set and get off the backside and make some phone calls. If this hurts your feelings, then pack your firearms up in the economizer and deliver them to the local PD yourself...., ammo, mags, and manhood included. Just sayin'..................

Boys,

Why to we have to wait for a federal law on direction? Cant we provide security at our local level? By school district, city, or state? Part of the problem we are experiencing today is because of Federal mandate!!!!!!!!!!!!!
