I just got a used PPK and when shooting, it sometimes (about 50%) doesn't lock the hammer back so it is double action followed by double action when it should be DA then SA. Any ideas why this happens and what I can do to fix it?
The bottom hammer lug could be worn down to where won't catch the sear. Someone could have taken a file to the hammer in an attempt to change the pull. It could also be a worn sear.
Welcome! It sounds as though the single action sear (or notch on the hammer) isn't holding. If it is a USA made PPK S & W will work on it. Hope this is helpful.
I had this problem with a PPK about 30 years ago. Memory is vague, but it was cured with a spring replacement.
At the moment, I'm recalling it was the hammer block spring, which is easy to switch out. Long time since I stripped one, but I'm not seeing any other spring acting on the sear, so that may be it.
My old parts lists show this as the "hammer arrestor" or "inside safety" spring. #25 in this diagram.
The sear was the culprit in a friend's Walther PP.
I also know that using the recoil spring for a .380 when you have a .32 can aggravate the problem. I ordered a replacement spring once and was sent the wrong one.

Hammer follow slide=the hammer is not catching the cocking peice (37) like it should for single action.Like said If it has the Smith & Wesson on the slide send it in to get it fixed.
