Pentagon Announces New Medal

There are Commendation Medals for this type of service. They do not take precedence over the Bronze-Star. It is just not right.

I served in-theater in Vietnam and my son in the Middle East and we both can just say...WOW.

I think your statement above covers my feelings. There certainly is a lot to "fighting" a war or conflict that goes on in the back rooms. Lots of computers and "intelligence", there perhaps should be some type of recognition but it should not be any where near what those who risk their lives are. Maybe a new mouse pad or something;) Modern Warfare is very high tech from what little I know.

But really, their contribution is important also just as all the Women who worked here in the factories during WW II
Did they award purple hearts or the Medal of Honor to any factory workers? I always thought that medals were for service above and beyond the call of duty. If you showed up and did your job, you got campaign ribbons. If you didn't show up, or didn't do your job you went to the brig.
Or maybe I'm missing something here????

I don't really have a problem with awarding medals for drone operators. In fact, I think it is kind of a good idea. I have a bit of heartburn saying that sitting at a computer screen is in anyway comparable to carrying a rifle and dragging wounded comrades out of harms way. If they just said it was a medal and didn't say it was "above" the bronze star i would be wholeheartedly for it.

Agreed Colonel

...other awards exist (commendation medals of the various services, Meritorious Service Medal, etc) that are perfectly adequate for recognizing those who pilot drones from an AFB in the US or who sit at a computer in Alexandria fighting off Iranian and Chinese hackers -- I admire their mission -- but I believe we have perfectly adequate medals to properly honor them for their accomplishments.

I agree. I'd have felt silly getting a combat related medal for the Military Intelligence Missions I worked in support of Combat Missions if I didn't also risk the same danger that the troops in combat risked.

Naaahhh.... something more like this. ;)

I'd have to say no. give them a commendation medal without precedence, this from an Army E-6 who served in central America in the 80's when we got nothing of any kind for our service, wounded, gallant, or otherwise.

You want a hero chit for your titsalad, put on your boots and pick up a rifle!

The US military looks like that of a banana republic, with one flag officer for every 1,000-1,500 enlisted men and senior officers and NCOs wearing rows and rows of fruit salad for popgun wars and staff service. What's next-the CTB-Combat Trauma Badge? The Distant Service Medal?

As I was reading your post I was sure it was a joke of some sort and I kept waiting for the punch line to come.

I am not a vet so I feel like I don't really have a dog in this one, but it sure makes me feel old to think about it.

At the end of the engagement that won him/her the Distinguished Warfare Medal, the warrior will go home, have a nice meal, and crawl into a warm bed.

At the end of the engagement that won him/her the Bronze Star, the warrior will recover the bodies of his dead comrades, re-establish the perimeter, and await what he prays will be an extraction before the next assault.

The drone pilots deserve recognition for what they do, but not anything comparable to combat medals. They face their own demons, though, I can't imagine sitting at a video screen watching people die real time, then going home to your kids baseball game in the evening. How do you rationalize that in your own mind?

Six years pass and a young man I work with is deaf as a post from an IED and is still trying to get his disability. They always say " thank you for your service" after his " appointments". But he can't hear them.... It's nice the drone pilots get a medal.Priorities.

I have no problem with awarding a medal to drone operators. Each branch has their own Achievement and Commendation Medals. They share the Meritorious Service Medal. There are also Joint versions of the A, C, and M Service Medals. There is no need for another medal. The Bronze Star can be awarded for non-direct combat operations (such as having all your trucks ready to roll as previously stated). The Bronze Star is not all that big a deal - wait a minute before your heads explode - The Bronze Star with a V on it is another matter all together. The V stands for Valor - as in combat service. I see a Bronze Star without the V and pretty much ignore it - with the V gets my respect.

Probably the same way you rationalize squeezing the trigger, watching people die and wishing you could go home to your kids baseball game being played several thousand miles away. I have to agree with others. If the only boots you have on the ground are in some hi-tech game-like drone control center rather than a forward combat area and the most danger you face daily is fanatical soccer moms in mini-vans on your drive in and drive home, then whatever award you are given should NOT rank above the Bronze Star.

COL Jagdog, our shields have a point on the bottom and one at each corner at the top. But seriously this type of stuff has been going on for years and years. The last two and a half years I was in, I was farmed out to the Navy as an instructor. The Navy guys were always talking about flights scheduled by the brass to go to Vietnam, land, do a hot refuel and leave so the mucky-mucks could get the Vietnam service medal. Also the Navy fighter pilots got an Air Medal for # of flights. Can't remember if it was 3 or 5 flights to get it but they deserved them. That didn't stop the guys that flew in the Vietnam airspace and never went over dry land from getting them also.(mail couriers, etc)
What makes me laugh is that when you see one of the drone jockeys on TV , they are in a flight suit. Oh well, that's just more of the reason I bailed after 7 years, the military just wasn't military anymore.

The same way I rationalized sitting a sonar stack while spying on the Russians and hoping we didn't get discovered and fired upon. It is the nature of the job - if you can't do it, don't sign up for it. I would have loved going home to see my wife and kids after my watches instead of going back to my 6x3x2 foot rack (please note I am 6'2") after dining on "square pig" or "red death" (you submariners will get the reference) and taking a sub 2 minute shower.
