Denied a transfer....WHAT?

Yesterday I got a denial on the background check for a firearm transfer. I recieved my concealed permit in July of last year. My most recent purchase was in December. I was told by someone at FDLE that my 4473 had two matches for someone who is not eligible for a firearm. I guess that means someone out there has my same name and lives in my city. I have committed no crimes or become mentally defective. I was given a form to fill out, that only needs my name, address and finger prints along with some info from the dealer, to send in. I'm really pretty upset by this. I'm wondering if any of you have been through this before? I provide my social security # on the 4473 to prevent this kind of thing. Is there anything I can or should do to help this appeal process along? Anything I can do to help prevent it from happening in the future? Will I have to go through this everytime I want to make a purchase?

Hold tight, most of the Floridians are probably participating in the early bird special at this time of day.

When we receive our permits we also get a pin number which we can (Optional) use, eliminates many problems.

I think, but not sure that you can get something similar from the Feds, the Florida gang will help you out on this one.

This happened to a good friend of mine a couple years ago. He went through a little bit of a background check and now has a card that speeds him through the system.Its now easier and quicker for him to now go through at gun shops

A lot of possibilities. The most obvious one is someone walked here from Mexico and at random put down a bunch of numbers. The same ones as SS gave you decades ago on an SS card. Now that person has assumed your identity and committed a crime! Or some jerk with your same name did a bad thing or two. Remember, you're dealing with the efficiency of our government. Its not like there's a penalty for doing a lousy job. If they screw up often and badly enough, they'll get a promotion. You have no real recourse except getting tossed in the delay and frustration bin they call your appeal process. They don't want the gun, you do, and they don't just not care, they'd prefer you not get the gun anyway.

OK, there are a lot of other explanations, none of them that will satisfy you. Just remember, they're with the government and they're here to help you. By taking your tax dollars and wasting them.

I assume what you got was a " Non-Approval".. DON'T PANIC!!.. It happens.. Florida does not use the regular NICS system.. The FDLE is the agency that handles.. the backround check.. your information is flash checked in I believe 4 different data bases.. city..county..state..federal.. if one is not available to check, a conditional approval is issued..and they have 24 hours to respond.. after 24 hours the LGS CAN release the gun, with the understanding that if something comes up.. Officer Friendly will show up and you lose the gun.. period..

If more than one HIT comes back it's a non approval period.. The LGS cannot release that gun and the appeal process starts..

The most frequent cause is..

Someone with your name or close ID number has a prior incident. long ago forgotten.

The biggest red flag is actually domestic violence


Go through the appeal process.. you will get a letter that will say all is well.. and with THAT letter you may purchase a firearm./firearms.

But know this it is only good for ONE transaction..multiple guns..in the same transaction are ok.. ( Most LGS's will hold the gun you chose until you get the letter)

In the mean time call the FDLE and start your U.P.I.N. # application.. ( Universal Personal Identification Number ) once you have that, use that number when filling out the 4473.. It never expires.. Just make sure that the person doing the calling in refers to that number..

Good luck.. and do not just let it go.. follow through and GET THAT PIN!!

You need to get a UPIN. Were you actually DENIED or Delayed?

Either way once you get your magic decoder PIN number it will not happen in the future should there be guns available to purchase.

Why didn't you present your CCW permit at time of purchase/transfer?
It would preclude the need to be called in for a background check, and saved you the aggrivation of all this drama.

Maybe that does not fly in Florida. It didn't in NV for a while because BATFE found out that some sheriffs were handing out renewals so long as the applicant was able to fog a spoon.

I get a small delay every time while they check my Green Card is still good. This might actually be a good thing as I believe there is somebody with the same name in the same zip.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm going to find out about getting the process started for getting a UPIN. That sounds like it will be the solution for this. As far as presenting the concealed permit, I did, we still have to to the background check with every trasfer from an FFL. That is why I'm a little put out by this, my permit has a license #, I would have thought that would take care of everything. I guess I need one more number to add to the mix.
I can't believe I spelled denied wrong, sometimes my fingers move faster than my brain.

When I lived in Tampa,FL I went through this same thing. After getting my PIN# everything was good.
Those of you that are Floridiots, look at your drivers license #. The last number is most likely a "0". Mine was a "6". Before I received my PIN#, that # (6) was the thorn in my side. That meant there were (6) other people with my exact name. I'm sure you can see the dilemma this caused.

You gave them your SS# on the 4473 and it was I'm assuming used in the check.
While this is being sorted out, I'd also,just for peace of mind, get one of those free credit reports that are available.

This would have me thinking that perhaps my SS# isn't mine alone anymore.

..plus it's a good thing to check every so often anyway.

I had bought many guns over the years with never a problem. I was shot accidently at an outdoor range in Florida. Because the ambulance came and police that went down as an incident.So the next time I bought a pistol I was flagged and the fact that you have carry permit means nothing. It's been cleared upand I've made 3 purchases since then. And by the way there are many accidents at ranges throughout the counrty every year.

In our state if you have CCW and show it at the time of the filling out the computer form they do not call any body you pay the money and they walk you to the door. This is in Arkansas. Jeff
