Hi Cowboy Action Shooters.... just joined the SASS and don't have much of an Idea how to begin. got me 2 decent Ruger BH's in .357 and .45colt. Wonder where and what i need to know from here. CAS is not that big in the NE but, I'd like to get other members from my club, (oldest in the country) to get involved. Maybe we could have some shoots of our own. Any suggestions on where to start would be a great help. Thanks.

Welcome to SASS! I have been shooting SASS for about 10 years now.

Were I you I would log onto the website and use the locate a club in your area tab to find a local club.

Go to a match and see what is involved, there will be plenty of offers to lend you some gear to shoot the match....take note of what lever action rifles are being used and decide which one best suits YOUR needs. Same with the shotguns.

SASS usually requires 2 handguns, a lever action rifle of a pistol caliber and a double barrel shotgun (most use a 12 gauge but there are a lot of .20 gauges showing up as well). or the only pump allowed is the Winchester model 97.

Many times there will be gear for sale as well. Most shooters prefer to have the handguns and rifle to be of the same caliber.

I am not one of them as I quite often shoot .44 cal 1860 Army Cap & Ball revolvers with black powder and use a copy of the Winchester 73 in 44-40 for my rifle and an old Stevens 311 for my double barrel.

The Marlin lever gun is also VERY popular and usually readily available and is less costly. Get some good holsters and gun belt, hat, boots and jeans and you are good to go!!

Part of the fun for many in SASS is the search for the STUFF....second hand stores become a gold mine of STUFF. You can spend very little or a boatload of money...all depends on what you want or like.

Lastly have fun!!

Happy to hear this. I did some cowboy action shootin for several years, then drifted away from it. Was a SASS member all that time. Let my membership lapse, but decided last month to re join. Luckily my alias was still available. Not too surprised there. You will really enjoy that game. Lots of light hearted fun, and great people to boot.

I would say that the most popular set of firearms would be a pair of Ruger Vaquero's in .38 SPL, A Marlin Cowboy lever gun in .38 SPL. and a Stoeger double barrel coach gun in 12 or 20 gauge.

Why not? They work VERY well straight out of the box and there is a wealth of 'smiths that will make them outstanding if you so choose.

Let us know how it all turns out!

This is what I did early last year and everything has worked out great.

I enjoyed SASS for years until I moved to an area that does not have any at the local range. With the cost of ammo now the best route is to go with .38. Mine are all .45lc and I had to reload to keep costs down.

You will have lots of fun though. Great bunch of people.

Welcome aboard. It is a lot of fun, kinda expensive to get everything together. As stated above, show up and there will be folks loaning you guns & gear to shoot. Two single action revolvers, a shotgun and lever action rifle and holsters will get you going. I have a couple of Vaqueros, a Marlin rifle and a Stoeger coach gun. I had a Baikal shotgun to begin with. I found they will close enough while reloading to make it difficult to load. Traded it for the Stoeger, which works very well. The .38 Marlin Cowboy has not been in production for awhile, so if you can find one, don't hesitate or it will be gone. You can use an 1887 Winchester lever action shotgun as well. Originals are very pricey, but there are some new reproductions around. I had my lever leather wrapped and it made a huge difference in operation.

Good luck and hope you have had as much fun as I have had
