NY state bill to require liability insurance as condition of gun ownership

Wow, this will be tough for all New Yorker, hey, they got what have voted for!!! I will never want to travel to that state for any reason, except traveling through it!

Hmmmm!?!?

"or they will suffer "immediate revocation of such owner's registration, license and any other privilege to own" a firearm. "

Thought the SCOTUS ruled gun ownership was a RIGHT , not a privilege?

Liability Insurance

I do not live in New York so the issue does not hit me---BUT----regardless of what the law says or doesn't say--I would think it would be prudent to carry some level of personal liability insurance in today's litigious environment. Hell you will be sued if you yell too loud at someone--let alone point a weapon at them---and for sure you will be sued if you fire the weapon

If you have nothing to lose--no personal assets--then go without insurance---BUT then again if you have no personal assets what the hell are you doing spending money on guns instead of taking care of your family or other more important things

New York gun owners, you need to leave the state before your governor puts up a fence to keep you from leaving. What's next, gun owners not allowed to own property, not allowed to operate a business. Maybe he will require to you to wear some identifying symbol, all before he comes up with the final solution.

A couple of points:

1. We should care about what happens in states we don't live in because it then becomes a model for the anti-gun people in other states, and potnetially at a federal level.

2. We should care about what happens in other states because this is part of an overall effort to chip away at gun ownership. We can't do much about what NY or other states make illegal, but every step is another step overall.

3. Yes, liability insurance is something a gun owner should have but it should not be mandated by law and we need to understand this has nothing to do with mandating insurance as a public service; it is about making gun ownership more expensive and more difficult. Also, some people simply cannot afford it while others may simply be unable to get it. It lets insurance companies decide who can and cannot own a gun and allows insurance companies to dictate the terms of ownership, storage, etc. How much trust do you have in insurance companies?

It might be NY today but you can bet it will be another state next week.

MA is trying to pass a bill that includes insurance. If it passes, we (the Boss and I) have 3 choices; sell the guns, pay the insurance or move. We will be moving to NH.

Same BS here in CT, unconstitutional bills are being pursued. The state is dying. This is not going to help draw people into the state.

We all know the only reason is to disarm people, not about insurance.

This is a tactic used on other issues as well. When people tried to regulate something on a national level, and failed, they turned to the states by applying more and more restrictions. The idea was to make it so difficult to (insert cause) that people would give up trying. This is just the beginning. We'll be fighting these battles for years to come, both nationally and in the states.

Paragraph 7 is interesting. "if a gun is lost or stolen it must be reported to the Police. " If a crime is committed by the gun before----"

Like the gun is going to leave my posession and run out and "commit a crime".

These buffoons are incredible. I believe it is the person using the gun that "commits the crime" not the inanimate object.

Well, a lot more people get injured each year playing sports then ever suffer a gun shot wound, so how about mandatory proof of insurance on baseball bats, footballs, golf clubs? Don't even get me started on chainsaws.......

I am sick and tired with this "You get what you voted for ****"!

I and many of my friends have never voted for these elected officials who are trying to destroy our rights and freedoms. Unfortunately we have this Huge voting machine floating island at the mouth of the Hudson River. Please don't think that there aren't any people with intellegence left in NY. We have enough problems fighting these Gun Control Idiots without everybody being classified as brainless bleeding heart sheep.

And BTW, If we loose here, guess where they're going to try next!

Sorry,

Mandatory insurance

How will retired or poor people be able to afford expensive liability insurance? This is what the insurance industry did to muscle cars in the 60's. Make it too expensive to own a car or a gun! Everyone must wake up and say no before it is too late. The politicians have gone over the edge on these issues.

i thought insurance companies were evil, now the dems wants them to get richer?

I support you & all of the sane people in NY fighting to keep your rights. Frankly, I don't know how you win, if you cannot win with the votes. The only other recourse is the courts & disputing the constitutionality of the laws after the fact...But this takes time & a lot of damage is done in the meantime.

I'm a NYer and gun owner. NO ONE in NY is complying with these nonsensical laws. Most are talking about moving, others are waiting for these illegal laws to be repealed. Either way, non compliance is now a way of life thanks to Emperor Cuomo and his cronies.

This will extend well beyond NY.

This is a main target of the opposition, intended to be one more brick on the load, to encourage citizens to abandon gun ownership due to costs.

In MY state of MA, one such proposal was for one liability policy PER FIREARM.

The ONLY purpose of such a law would be to drive dissenters to disarm or move away, ensuring one-party dominance.
