M&P22 Safety Plugs

8520153874_7a7d30dba1_c.jpg

I'd like to introduce the upgraded version of the M&P22 safety plugs I created late last year. If you are unfamiliar with the safety plugs for the M&P22, view the previous thread here.

These new plugs are printed with a 3D printer using high quality black ABS plastic that matches the color of the frame very well. I wanted to create a kit that people could easily order and install in their M&P22 to remove the safety while still making the gun safe and functional.

I went through a few designs about about 10,000 rounds of .22lr and have finally put together a kit that works.

The kit I am selling comes with 2 pairs of black ABS plugs and a machined strengthened steel dowel and printed instructions for an easy install.

You can download a PDF version of the instructions with images by going here: http://www.ryanjay.com/mp22.pdf

I am selling the kits for only $20 with free shipping. If you'd like to find out more info on the M&P22 safety plugs you can visit a website I set up at [ MADE BY RYAN JAY ]. There you can also buy the plugs. I will only be selling them through my website so I have the ability to track orders.

I'd love to hear your input on the upgraded, version 2 of the safety plugs. I would also love to answer any questions you have.

Please visit my website at [ MADE BY RYAN JAY ] or email me at [email protected] if you have any questions that need to be answered personally.

Is the bar and plug required to function with the safety levers removed? Or is this a cosmetic fix?

The plug's aren't required, but they help to keep dirty and gunk out. When I had the safety removed without the plugs I noticed a good amount of **** building up after about 1000 rounds. Moving around from the safe to the bag through the range.

The dowel is required. Without it your hammer doesn't function properly.

if someone is accidently shot with your "dowel" operating the trigger who will be held accountable ? [ hammer doesn't function properly ]...the plugs are one thing but messing with the trigger is another ballgame ...just a thought

The only difference between the M&P22 with the replacement dowel and a full size M&P with no safety is the caliber. The replacement dowel is just shorter than the original one currently in the gun. All you're doing is replacing it with a shorter one to accommodate the plugs on each side.

If someone shoots themselves, the responsibility is on them. It's no different than a firearm without a built in safety.

Just ordered a set, can't wait to get them installed.

Approximately how long would it take to install and/ or switch back to stock if possible ( for teaching my younger shooters gun safety )

To disassemble and reassemble the firearm for install, I would say it probably takes 30-45 minutes. Maybe less. I've done it dozens of times already for testing different products and it just gets easier and easier.

I am creating a PDF file now with photos for download so people can see how install works before buying.

Also, the main reason I decided to remove the safety from my M&P22 was because I wanted it as close to the full size 9mm without a safety as possible. I wanted to train holstering and drawing the firearm and learn control. Having the safety on it was just one thing that kept getting in the way from learning the full size.

Just ordered your kit. When will the pdf instructions become available online? Thanks!

Got your order! I hope to have the PDF online tonight or tomorrow. The kit comes with instructions, but it doesn't have photos.

I ordered mine yesterday for my pistol I got a few days ago. Don't worry about installing them, these guns are not complicated. I stripped mine down and removed the mag disconnect and safety the night I got it with help of a YouTube video.

As a side note, Ryan has been great to work with, responded to my emails immediately. I am stoked to install these plugs.

One comment as to the state of the firearm with the safety removed: it is not the same as the 22's older brothers in 9mm and 40S&W. The others have a striker that is pulled back with the trigger pull while the 22 is a cocked hammer with a single-action trigger. If you remove the safety be aware that you risk a ND if the firearm is dropped. I would recommend not leaving it chambered without the safety.

The 22 has a firing pin block as well. It is not going to go off if you drop it. The safety just blocks the trigger bar from actuating. It doesn't stop the sear from actuating.... The full size safety works in the same way...

Sorry I don't have my pistol with me. So if I understand correctly, there are two safety mechanisms.

1. Hammer block safety in the slide that blocks the hammer from hitting the firing pin unless the trigger bar moves it out of the way upon pulling the trigger. This would protect from a discharge if the gun is dropped.

2. Thumb safety which simply deactivates the trigger bar from contacting the sear. So if the trigger is pulled, it does not release the hammer.

Is this correct? So in sense, the hammer block safety is similar to the striker block in the 9 and 40 pistols. My 9 does not have a thumb safety so I'm considering removing the safety on the 22.

Yep, both of mine had the thumb safety and both are now gone. S&W sent me plugs for the full size but they don't have any for the 22.
