686 picture thread

Did you swap the Red Ramp for the Patridge, or did it come that way ? ? I have never seen a 686 w/ a Patridge from the factory.....

They are not as common as ones with a red ramp but 6" 686s with another factory front sight are out there.

The upper one in the photo is a no-dash with a Patridge front sight and the lower one is a -3 Classic Hunter with a black ramp.

686-3

Found a nice used 686-3 at LGS yesterday for a bargin price. Couldn't resist bringing it home with me. Stripped it down, cleaned, and put on a set of smooth rosewood target stocks. Going to try it out this afternoon!

If you look for it

686-1 6" No Lock.

Do any of you find the 6" barrel-heavy? Mine is kind of new to me and sometimes I wish I'd found a 4" no lock...

Of course I don't feel that way when I'm hitting good patterns at 75'...

It's front heavy also because of the full underlug if you are feeling the gun to test it's balance. But when I'm shooting, I don't notice it.

Interesting how they have different shape cylinder releases...flat against the thumb versus angled.

Question: how many of you can tell the dash version by just looking at the pistol? What are the biggest distinguishing features?

added another...all -4's....

Just picked up this 686 yesterday. This is my first revolver, and after much reading, I knew this was the one I wanted.
The Ahrends grips were a bonus and work well with my smaller hands. This 686 is an AARnnnn vintage - around 1981?

Purchased mine (4"; 104202) new in April 1985; ADYnnnn, if that helps.

Adding a couple of more photos of the pre-lock 686SSR no-dash.

Okay...nobody is challenging me on the description. :(

Okay, looking over this thread and didn't note the "challenge" you mentioned so I'll take a shot.

I'm thinking a -3 or earlier 4" square butt, with the newer 686 SSR barrel added. Could be TOTALLY wrong (and frequently am :) ) but that's my guess for now. Correct?

P.S. If original, or Frankenmagnum, either way I kind of dig it. :)

It is a 686 no-dash with a SSR barrel.
