Why do YOU carry a revolver?

I have two revolver that I sometimes carry. I could say that it's a confidence thing. But in reality I have total confidence in the semi autos that I carry so there must be more to it than that. I would not carry any gun that I didn't have 100% confidence in.

I have always found the variety adds interest and pleasure in most things in life. I don't wear the same shirt every day. I don't have the same thing for dinner every night. And I don't carry the same gun every day.

Sometimes I'm in a .45 auto mood, sometimes I'm in a .44 spcl mood, etc.

I love my S&W 24-3 and my Ruger SP101 I carry them both and find it very pleasant. Very satisfying. I started out with revolvers and my love for them goes back many years. I'll always have a few revolvers in my stable.

I TRUST IT. I over time it has always done what it was supposed to do. Never let me down. When she needs some preventive maintence I can alway tell by th way she sounds and feels. I dont have to wait till she jams up on the middle of something going on. Can't honestly say that about some of the autos I own.

Primarily because, while I like my semi-auto 9mm, my wheelguns will never jam at an inopportune time and now that I have 8 shots in both of my 627PC's, the round count delta is diminished. :"-)

I love the look of a revolver with an unfluted cylinder. DA or SA they just look really sharp to me.

What I carry depends a lot on where I'm going, and what I'll be doing when I get there.

I don't always carry a revolver, because if I'll be working where my carry is going to get banged and bounced around I take my Glock. For all the hate they are great at what they are, nearly indestructible. And not going to get any uglier.
And sometimes I carry a 1911 because, well 'cause 'Merica, that's why!

But I often do carry a revolver, for the simple reason that my smallest and easiest to conceal weapon is a S&W J-frame.

And sometimes I OC a big N-frame, just to make the young girls smile.

No hottie ever smiled at my Glock . . .

You carry an N frame? Does your state allow OC?

Yes, va allows oc and cc. In the winter when wearing my US Navy blue/gray digitized camo coat, I could almost put a cannon under there :-) LOL.

For a civilian in a defensive situation...
revolver can fire even with an awkward grip on the weapon.

revolver can fire even while making contact with a human torso.

revolver does not require me to fumble with safeties or chamber a round.

And, although I am not counting on this aspect......when you look down the barrel of a 66 snub and see those Gold Dots staring out of the cylinders.....and that tall front sight.......It's a bit more apt to freeze a perpetrator (just my opinion, and again, I am not counting on that aspect for self-defense.)

Because I can. Goes bang every time. Fits my hand really good. And they just speak to me.

And Walkin' Jack....has been going shoe shopping with his wife to much! :) That would be a great discussion point with the wife.."well you don't always were the same pair of shoes everyday! Way to go Walkin' Jack...I love it!

"Six for sure versus a dozen 'maybes' " covers it.

In running a LOT of qualifications I can remember one revolver going down--a Ruger DA's thumb piece screw (factory staked) backed out. Everything else was preventable by loc-titing the ejector rod, dumping the empties straight down, and keeping the area under the ejector star clean.

OTOH even SIGs and Glocks with factory ammo and some very proficient shooters would eventually choke--often for no discernible reason. Not much of a confidence builder.

Another 442er here.

Compact, simple and reliable. I have never felt "under-gunned" with my EDC, a Model 60 loaded with Hornady .357 158 gr HP XTP's...

All my semi auto pistols are just as reliabile as my revolvers are. Just like my 145lb female rottie and pistols are getting a bad rap.

I switch to revolvers in magnum calibers over my auto's but it depends on where i'm going and what i'm doing.

Revolvers can meet several important considerations, which include being able to put rounds on target and overall shootability.

And, if eight good auto loading rounds is sufficient per gun load, then eight good 38/357's (N frame) should work just as well.

And some smaller autoloaders only carry five, six, or seven rounds per mag. Well, some common 38/357 revolvers have the same capacity.

Rounds on target.

And, legally, some people are only allowed to carry a revolver. Heh, some are not legally allowed to carry at all...............

FWIW, it wasn't that long ago that men carried multiple large revolvers into battle. One N frame is not that big of a deal (absent medical or similar issues).

Are you guys telling me that there is something else, what is this thing referred to as a semi auto?

I started to trade back and forth after getting a 640 from my father as a gift. Though now that I have carried that, my semi-auto feel so big and bulky! I don't know if I could go back. I carry a Ruger sp101 3 inch nowadays (don't crucify me! I know this is the S&W forum). I love my 6 inch 686 though, and it has a fascinating story behind it! Once things calm down with my new little one, I will post some pictures and tell the tale.

I would say because they work. Not to mention even with a miss those 357Bs will hopefully make a would be attacker both blind and deaf for a bit.
Nines and forties just don't bring the thunder!

I've thought about this a lot. I have both revolvers and a semi.

Here are my thoughts.

Reliability:
Revolver...fail to fire? Just pull the trigger again.
Semi...fail to fire? Rack slide, eject bad cartridge, reload new. Another fail to fire? Repeat.
Plus....Revolver

Ammo loading/storage:
Revolver...insert 5/6/8 (based on capacity) cartridges into the cylinder, close. Want more capacity? Get a speed loader.
Semi....insert 5/10/15 (based on capacity) into one or how many you have magazines. Hard to do? Strengthen your fingers or get a Upula loader. Don't forget to rotate Mags to prevent spring fatigue. Wife can't load the mag? Load for her or train her to use Upula loader.
Plus...Revolver

Carrying for Self Defense
Revolver....always loaded and ready to go. Pull trigger, go Boom!
Semi.....do you carry with one "in the pipe"? If no can you rack slide fast enough if threatened? Aka Israeli Method?
If you continually carry in the pipe, what about bullet seating? Will the bullet get pushed into he case with repeated use?
Plus......Revolver

Use by multiple users:
Revolver.....wife can easily load and shoot
Semi.....wife has trouble loading magazine (especially trying to put max qty of bullets in) wife cannot rack slide to chamber round.

Brass Collection:
Revolver.....open cylinder, drop empties onto table, bucket, etc
Semi.....seek and search. Is that a .40? No.....I thought I shot 10 rounds? I'm only finding 8??
Plus......Revolver

Cleaning and Care:
Revolver......open cylinder, clean cylinder and barrel, easy access
Semi......depends on Model and Make. See Owners Manual. Not all are the same to take down.
Plus...Revolver

Just my opinion. And we all know what that's worth........:D

Why? Its simple. My Remington 1100 won't fit in any of my purses but a S&W model 610 or a S&W 29-3 with 8 3/8 barrel will. Evening wear? You as what I carry. Thats easy. A 2 1/2 model 19.
